Frank had not been in Wardle con club for several year,s now.He was living in a flat in Rochdale somewhere.He was or maybe still is 56.I,ve been on to a few in Wardle just waiting for someone to phone back,will post as soon as.

Pat Seal a real character and Gentleman who once you have met him, and had the crack, he was that type of man you never forget and always willing to help, as he did at Haditha when we fit a propshaft uj on to a scania with very limited tools it took us half a day,Pat had time for anyone,from the photo with Ritchie he had not changed that much, its 25 years since i saw him,
Pat Seal Rip, you will be sadly missed.
Also another character that passed away this week ,Kenny aka Egg on Legs Rip

Have to agree with everything Klunk says, except Kenny (Egg) Bowkett died about 3 years ago in London.

Pat Seals and I had one of those weekends in Czech, just a spontaneous session after I parked outside a small restaurant. After changing all Pats wheels round, we got very drunk :stuck_out_tongue:

RIP. I doubt I can make it to Lancaster, but my thoughts will be with you all. :frowning:

Sorry about that wheelnut i should have read the post below more closely, i am hoping to make Pats funeral, as its only an hour away and i should be back from Spain on Thursday.

Mike Sargent informs me that he did a stint on Simons at the same time that Mike and myself were on for Jeffrey and he drove one of the Marathons. Can anyone else confirm this

Well Jamie, without giving too much away, it is an old border with “M” being the first letter. Photo taken circa 1974 and you’re in the right part of the world.

Just a quick question did the lateq day m/e drivers like gs overland and later pay uk road tax and how do the curent guys like barry barnes stand with tax etc doing sellers

To my knowledge there is no clear answer to your question. Back in the 70’s & 80’s any loaded vehicle had to pay road tax, however an empty vehicle could be registered private and I believe (but not 100% sure) that Astran drivers picked up their trailers and dropped them in the Port to get around the UK Road Tax. Once the tri axle trailers came in, I had my six axle rig down rated to 32 tons to save money and took the risk if I was over weight, I know other drivers did the same. :open_mouth:
In essence there was loads of ducking and diving and risk taking on the road tax issue and bet there still is. Knowing Barry from the old days or “Fiddler Barnes” as he was known then, you can be sure that he does not spend on such trivialities unless absolutely necessary . :wink:

In answer to your lets say “personal questions” there were several ways to work the system. One was to tax your unit as “Private” which was the same as a car road tax. It all depended on how you filled out the form
That would entitle you to run solo in the UK. So you would either get someone to pick up your loaded trailer in Dover and tip and load it for you and take it back to Dover or you just took a chance and run at night when the Ministry were in bed with their mummy
At least there was a tax disc in the window and that was sufficient for a cursory check.
We all spent so much time out of every year overseas that the risk of getting a pull for the couple of times that we had to drive in the UK seemed like it was worth the risk, and most of the time it was. Then of course having 6 axles you only had to pay 1200 Quid for a years road tax., but I never chose that route. Even on the gate at Dover the copper didnt bother looking.
The biggest risk was when we had to load in lets say Aberdeen. You remember Rick, all the way up there for pipes, and then run the gauntlet to the office for papers ( or Bob Pauls house) and then on to Dover ( if you made it without turning the truck over !!) Getting into Dover was a sigh of relief
because once inside, nobody was checking for tax discs.
I used to wait for my night driving permit to come into force and then just drive upto London to the Yard or just park the truck and trailer outside my house in any available parking space. Imagine waking up and opening your bedroom curtains and seeing a great big Yellow and Red truck outside your bedroom window, covered in ■■■■
Not nowadays. The fun’s gone out of the job.
Some people used to call us “Cowboys” but we used to get the job done year in and year out, and we didnt ask to many questions

Well Done Biffo it is indeed the border that you’re thinking of. Correct spelling I believe is “Al Mudawara” the border in the south of Jordan into Saudi.

Thanks Big Dorris but the answer was given on an earlier page. Mike who took the photo says it was a Volvo (probably an F88 rather than an F89) Volvo badge just above the door handle if you look closely.

The tax question is not so easy now days that the police have the number plate recognition system which is linked to DVLA. (smile you are on candid camera) 100 meters later you are stopped (around here they do night shift as well now days). Technology is not all good and can take the fun out of the job. :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

When i first passed my test i worked for a bloke who was running a fleet of tippers round london on private tax and a bit of blue paper in the window for an o licence it may not be right but it was more fun than now.

The problem with down rating the gross weight of the truck for cheaper tax was, that in the event of you being caught overweight it was a much more serious offence. Also to have it uprated again was the same expensive process. If you taxed it private you could run empty legally. the dvlc computer only told the police if the vehicle was taxed or not and not the class of taxation. If or when plod or wheel tapper noticed that the disc was private they could only report you if you were loaded. The secret was that in the worst scenario on being caught loaded that you sent a note to your local taxation office stating that you had to use your truck to collect or deliver a load due to unforseen circumstances and that you included a cheque for one months tax at the going hgv rate for that vehicle. This was about ÂŁ170.00. The only acknowlagement that you got was a receipt for the said amount and no proceedings to follow. On many occasions a valid dated tax disc was only given a cursory glance. The truck could still plated at the maximum gross weight although it was taxed private and it was just a paper exercise to pay the full tax rate. I knew of a chap who was running a lot of trucks on international work taxed this way and he had a sprung loaded paper clip thick with receipts from the local taxation office for trucks that had been stopped coming or going to ports from his yard and not a summons. No mate im from south london i cant belive there was more than one cowboy running tippers in london:-).
Any time i was stopped and they looked at the tax i used to say i had just started and just looked at the date. Never got nicked for it although one motorbike cop took the tax and kept it. I rang the bloke and he wizzed down to the dvla at sidcup and got a replacement disc before they cancaled it.

I got caught with PLG (night tax) in the window it cost me ÂŁ15500 in 1992 quite a lump of money back then I can tell you, it was xmas week too oh such happy days!
