Astran / Middle East Drivers

kr79:
Dont know how true this is but there was someone who posts on trucknet was meant to work with Frank Hook doing uk work. Im sure I read he jacked it in after the one trip in destination doha Sinbin or one of the other drivers may be able to verify this though. I also read on here Dave Poulton was doing sellers down to the middle east and he was doing night trunking but i dont know how true that is.

Hi kr79. Frank certainly did far more trips than just destination Doha and to my knowledge Dave Poulton never did any sellers in the ME.

Just goes to show you have to take what you read here with a pinch of salt.

Hi mate sorry to have to tell u all have Passed on Except Frank Hook, R I P.

Roger Haywood

Thanks for the info, what a shock, not that I knew any of them, as I was in a different type of transport, (I used to drive for Linotype - Paul, who were Linotype & Machinery’s parent company, we did the Imagesetters and Drum Scanners.
I wrote to Astran haulage regarding the film Destination Doha and they asked Dave Poulton if he could record the programe for me, which he did & I still have it some where. I did hear that John Williams past away just after the film was made, I also have a dvd staring ■■■■ Rivers & one of the doctors from Doctor in the House tv series, its rubbish, but I suppose the truck was nice, although I cant remember what the truck was. Thanks for the info, how ever sad it was.
Showtruckdaf (if you want to know what the show truck looked like, look on biglorryblog, august 2009, its under my name dizzy-t. ). Whats Frank Hook doing these days, also Dave Poulton, last I heard he was a baggage handler at Heathrow ■■?.
Richard Smith.

That was about 1997 according to this BBC article. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/politics/21724.stm

I understand how that could have been relevant

I missed the Funeral and I miss the Man :frowning:

OHHHHH Roger, if you mean this bridge at Edirne then you are not too far away, less that several hours if you were going north but if you were going south like I was when I took the photo then you could be three or four days away  , but have another go, have another go  .

As regards the photo of the other bridge, I know that all you guys have crossed this river using the old stone bridge that I think was built by The Romans but when I took the photo of the temporary floating bridge it was I.I.R.C. 1981/82 about a kilometer down river.
I thought that Wheel Nut might of got it by now :astonished: , or where is Bestbooties :astonished: , I have not noticed him around for a while, I hope that you are O.K. Ian.
Roger, some time ago I mentioned The White Wooden Policeman who was stood just before the tunnel at Pirot and you said that at one time you stuck a Union Jack sticker on him  , well I remember seeing that sticker and in that very interesting article about John Willy there looks like a picture of one of those tunnels near Nis  .

Regards Steve.

Reddesertfox:
As a last shot, it could have been Kamarno…come on Roger I have done my best, now it is all down to you…if you want the milky bar…

Sorry Reddesertfox, it’s not Komarno but I have a feeling that the Czechs closed that border to T.I.R. traffic in 1981 while they did some major repairs to that bridge. Just before they closed it we had to space out about twenty meters apart which made the queue appear to be longer than it really was :unamused: , if that makes sense.

Regards Steve.

Hi Steve

Yes your right the bridge at Erdine had no water under it ,but I do know this pontoon bridge but Ive lost where it is   give me time it will come im sure, were,   they not building a new bridge to the right of the picture which is out of site ,dam my brain hurts now thinking about it. Dont know how you managed to take all these pics , I should have taken some more as well but yours are great for the memories.

Now let’s see if you or Roger can remember where this photo of this TEMPORARY bridge was taken, it’s open to anybody so come on I am sure that some of you will know it  .

Regards Steve.

Hullo Steve,
Just a shot at this bridge thing, was it at Ruse ? when they were refurbishing the big Iron bridge.?
Cheers , Archie.

Hi Archie, as soon as I saw that you had logged in I thought Archie will get it  but no it’s not near Russe but if you remember this was the big bridge at Russe.

Regards Steve.

Hullo Steve,
Yes that’s the bridge at Russe alright, but hmmmm !, where’s a temporary pontoon bridge, 3 - 4 hrs difference going one way and 3 - 4 days in the opposite direction ? My memory is worse thar Rogers.
Cheers, Archie.

The registration KJN671P is mentioned in this article I bought this Scania 140 from Gerry Whelan RIP (who had bought it from Astran)when he stopped subbying for Astran. Barry Barnes told me he had driven it as well and he told me that it had been cut down from a rigid.

Here it is working in Europe

Regards Pat

Thank you to all for the memories to a truly great Guy, I just wished that i had had the chance to meet him, still we do have the film to see him in his element. So Thanks once again. Looking forward to the book about Astran.
