I used to run with Barnsey quite a bit both when he had his own red 142 and when he was selling.
I remember one trip in Iraq on our way to Doha, he had some bad water or ice and he was really sick and sh#**ing himself all the way from Baiji to Nasariyah.
It wasn’t pretty.
What is he upto these days ■■
If you see him, send him my regards.

Now you’ve got my mind going again. Another trip on our way home, we stopped at Aksaray Polis TIR Kontrol and crossed over the road to one of the Kamikaze bus restaurants for something to eat. Now I never used to eat in those places because they keep the food warm all day, but Barnsey said he always ate there, so I had beans and you’ve guessed it, it was my turn for the trots until Istanbul. Boy that road had some bumps.!!!

Who remembers a driver from Astrans named Brian Peek, he came from Snodland Kent, He lost the top of a finger when stripping a tilt to backload in Austria.

does anyone knows who the mechanic / driver is , he looks like john holland , ex astran driver
ex-dutch tractors , used to run by the everts transport company from gieten
Hi All, Just looking through some old posts and found this. Surprised to see my friend Terry Tott mentioned and I had to ring him up to tell him. Ironically, Terry was going to come around tomorrow, after sorting out some photos, so that we could start a post for Astran drivers as he worked doing the middle east as an Astran and later owner driver for many years. Unfortunately, I have postponed tomorrow due to work commitments, but, after finding this tonight I have rang him and he will be coming around next week to add some photos and he may well be able to answer some of your questions. If anyone knows him and would like to contact him please let me know and I will pass on any phone numbers Cheers Ady

Sorry missed this post the man in the pic with the blue coat and ■■■ is the infamous John Shaw fitter/driver who worked for me for many years and yes the trucks did come from Holland courtesy of the late Pim DeVrees of Alex Van Keulan of Amersfoort, the other driver is the famous Barry Barnes who is still taking trucks to the Middle East!!!

Has anyone got any clearer pics of Bob Poggiani’s Scammell.
It looks like a rare bit of kit.
I presume it was ■■■■■■■ powered, double drive does anyone know any more about it?
Did it do the job ok?
Is it still about?
Cheers Mark
HI mate, all i know is that it was a Scammell S26 6x4 and was Powered by an NTE350 ■■■■■■■ BigCam. Think it got knicked-named Scammell SCUD, when they went back into the middle east soon after the Gulf war! Wouldnt mind a pic it either, nice ol tool.
Hi all
I caught up with Bob Poggiani and his Scammell Scud at Osmaniye on his first trip to Doha, he was running with Bob Hedley.
I ran with Bob Poggiani quite often and let me tell you, that motor was a flyer. My Danish spec 141 was fast and pulled like a train, but that ■■■■■■■ used to give me a run for my money. It had a Jake Brake too.he was running it before and during the Gulf war and we all got stuck in Doha for about three weeks during the height of the air offensive. So when we finally got going on our way home, it was hell for leather all the way.
The Syrian Convoy ended up with me and Poggi racing to Bab el Hawa, and that’s when the Turks gave it the name Scud because we passed everything on the last part of the convoy.
It got a bit hairy when it started to rain and one of the Turks who was trying to keep up, ended up launching him self of the road and ploughing a field.
As far as I remember, the Scammell was reliable but then all of a sudden Bob finished driving.
I don’t know what happened to Poggi or the Scammell after that.I will dig out some pictures of it.The picture of it on this post was one I took when we were at the Telex Motel, waiting for the Gulf War to start before we headed towards Syria.
We were there for nearly a week, listening to all the horror stories of what was happening at the border.
In the end I got fed up and decided to go for it, and after some discussion, we all left together and got as far as Ramtha before we encountered any problems.

Hi GS, sem to remember seeing Bob and his Scammell in truck magazine, a Long distance Diary feature, think the story was about Peter Lea Trucking F12, in Orient Freight colours, was it that trip?
Thanks for your replies guys.
Dont remember it from Long Distance Diary to be honest.
Look forward to seeing some more pics of her in due course.
Thanks
Mark
