Astran / Middle East Drivers

It said Teheran on the page I confiscated the photo from.

I’m stumped. It looks like a 112 Intercooler, but it cannot be that in the 1970s. Plus, the windscreen is too vertical- unless the thing in the windscreen is the curtains or some sort of sun-shield, like the two Mercs appear to have. If the 'screen is more raked than that, I would suggest it is another NG, or maybe a Henschel:

If the 'screen is as vertical as it looks, then I guess it could be one of those funny steel-cabbed ERFs.

If it said Teheran on the photo then that must be,what was then, the ‘‘new’’ west customs which was built to take all the new ‘‘flood’’ of trucks from EuropĂ©.I Think it was opened in about 74\75.
Basically it was just a big piece of sand with a standpipe for water outside the new customs.

Robert, I go for 90% a Scania but if not it could be an ERF (Eurocab).

Eric,

I’ve studied the pic until I went boss eyed and it appears to have headlights in the bumper, so my guess is a 110/140.

At first glance it looks like a Swains of Stretton 112/142, but that would’ve been a Dr Who moment as the 2 series wasn’t even on the drawing board then.

Hey Newmercman, I agree for 100% now with you, lights in the bumper, and looks like the sunvisor is put flat
because of a big driver, how many times haven’t we seen that.

Eric,

The 'screen is too far behind the front panel to be a 110, to my boss eye at least! I agree about the headlights in the bumper though, hence my guess at Henschel. Alternatively, the light patch on the bumper could be lettering or other paintwork, hence my guess at NGC. Does our resident NGC guru have memories of any with a livery similar to that lorry?

Were the NGC available in 74 and if so did anybody running one go to Teheran?

I can remember there was a Turkish company building a truck that looked very similar to a Scania 110/111. Maybe it was one of those?

Hey one of this you mean ■■? Colours doesn’t correspond, but maybe it got more of them.

Eric,

It looks like Mr Arbon has solved the mystery.

Eric,

That’s what I was wondering, Eric! However, I agree that Chris may have come up with the answer. Robert

Hey,

Only this lets me think ERF, for a Henschel the roof looks to high or too low according construction year.
And the grille looks too very different for me.
Only what I think.

Eric,

That ERF picture is a negative image! It’s been given RHD and the window stickers are back to front  ! Robert

To answer your question NMM, and Anorak’s in one post: they were available in '74 but only to Continental operators, one or two of whom did go to the M/E. However, I can’t think of any that match that paint job. A year or two later they were going occasionally to Tehran from UK. Robert

PS, it did occur to me that it might at a pinch be this Swiss one, which according to the bumper seems to have dabbled in M/E work at some time. Perhaps it acquired or lost the visor en route! Robert

Found this on the Anglo-Greek, thread looks very similar with the recessed screen. Credit for the picture goes to Gavin Macardle and can be viewed on the Anglo-Greek thread,

Hey, nice looking Scanny, often seen by the Greek, think it was a pvc grille in one piece ■■
And the schorten mudguards at the end. They took endless time to rebuilt their cabs in those days.

Eric,

Good input! Robert
