I don’t know, Jorg, I haven’t seen any but I found the pic on the net. There are other pictures out there of this vehicle from the '70s. Robert

Here it is before the re-fit and extention.
Azraq Airstrip, Jordan.

After the re-fit at Qatar Navigations yard.

Outside Khamis al Khulaifi’s yard where it was rebuilt.

Getting pulled out of the sand on Camel Alley.

Some really great pics - bring 'em on

Just came across this on You Tube

For me, the music is totally divorced from the film content in this presentation.

When I drove lorries abroad I used to tune into what I called ‘Radio Ethnic’! That is: I used to listen to French pop music in France, Bulgarian state radio broadcasts of their brilliant choral folk music when in that country, Turkish ‘arabesque’ in Turkey etc. In Spain I used to listen to either their local Flamenco stuff or Radio Classica which broadcast Spanish classical music with amazing clarity of sound - WAY better than Classic FM in UK - except the the mountains used to interrupt reception. In the Middle East, there was local radio.

Why did I do this? Because if you have to put up with a sound-track to your existence, you might just as well try and enjoy the real sound-track of where you are. This is astonishingly powerful. I can now, decades later, listen to those music genres and re-live the road just as you can with tastes and smells.

Hi Robert
I agree.
And a bit of BBC World Service to keep abreast of the political situation…
still do the same now when I’m “down the road”…

Still was nice to hear “Just a minute” on the BBC World Service when parked up in the desert between Hillah and Rafa, or tuning my small monochrome TV into watch “Match of the week” from Greek TV when parked up at Kapic.

Nice to see old friend and much respected ME trucker Rick Ellis, RIP.(AKA Red Desert Fox).

Hi Ian
I find it hard to believe that Rick passed away two years ago, around this time iirc ! :frowning: :frowning:

Do you remember F Troop and their “radio antenas” ■■ crystal set with a wire attached to a nail in the ground with a bit of water poured over it ? often seen in parking areas at borders East !! Innovation.

Fascinating innovation. Could you possibly give a more detailed explanation how it was setup? I am rather intrigued - especially the water part.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the link. A really nice video.

Well this is the top of Blela Blanka south Yugoslavia before the new road through the mountains between Nis and the Bulgarian border. It was more than a challenge than Tahir in the winter which every one talks about but after 1971 when the new road open you drove along the river through the tunnels which was a great improvement

Great picture there, but looking at the Bulgarian Merc parked alongside, it has to be later than 1971.
Sorry, I’m not being critical, just curious - I think most of us are having the same trouble with the old grey cells.

I think K reg was 71/72, but of course we don’t know how old the Scania was when the picture was taken…

John

I just watched the John Dowdall vid, there seems to be a few of them about, all the same photos but with a different sound track. I think the best photos to music thingies were done by Ferdy… The ones he did on the end of Destination Doha really fitted with the era, as did the Daniel Fremont photos…
I also noticed that there were a few shots of then bottom end of the Bolan pass but none of farther up or the bridge that you can’t cross so you had to ford the river…

Jeff…
