Hi David, I thought your past had caught up with you not having heard from you for a while. anyway my lappy has gone into moody mode and is in the workshop and I am on my neighbours lappy at the moment - what a shame that the thread has gone quiet, I suppose it would have to dampen down a bit as time goes on as we are all running short on our adventurous incidents - I reckon there are still plenty of photo’s that the lads have not published or found yet, get up into that loft fella’s and have a sort out - Regards Fred

Well I went down to Brindisi last week with Kenny Ward and that counts as an adventurous incident if ever there was one!

My son came across this pic of a couple of my ex: workmates, I am sure that the earlier drivers will recognise them.
Any offers
regards Fred

No takers?

It is, of course, Kenny ‘aye up’ Ward and John ‘do your shirt up’ Streek in the yard at Norman Road, Greenwich.

Do I get a prize?

Well done David, however did you know that, nevertheless the first prize is down to you and will create a lot of jealousy amongst the ex M/E boys - Are you sitting down ? It is an 8 hour tour of Dover East Docks on a Sunday night with no restrictions.
Fred.

Second prize - 16hr tour?

Second prize - 16hr tour?

Does that include a meal in the old Greasy Spoon Harry ? And a couple of hours on the Stairs ?

Plus three hours on the bank watching the rummages dig a tunnel thru a forty footer. Followed by a twenty questions game in an ice cold room.

How well I remember the two hours on the stairs especially of a Sunday evening. Life just isn’t the same without it.

Does anyone remember Kenny worked out of Preston area? He was a big fella that couldn’t even get in the bunk and was nicknamed Egg on legs

This has been asked before and it would seem that there were actually two fellas with the same nickname. The chap I met was called Kenny Bowkett ( I think), from Charlton on south London. There have been some pics posted of him on this thread somewhere. Known as “Kenny the Egg” or “Egg on Legs” for a very good reason, that being his actual body shape and size.
Apparently he went to live in Thailand for a while, coming back to the UK now and again. He,apparently, died on his last trip back to the UK, was found dead in his hotel room. A few of the old hand posters on here knew him, Truckyboy and Newmercman being two I think. I think he also worked for Roy Bradford for a time.

Absolutely right Bullitt, R.I.P. Kenny. As I seem to remember there was also another bloke, I seem to think that he was from the Grantham area called Kenny Ashton who was referred to as Egg on Legs too. He used to drive a scabby old Black F88. He always had a younger bloke in the cab with him, this was because he could’nt get out of the Cab to unlace or open the Tilt or dash out up steps, queue for papers, or any other sort of graft. Just sit on the seat drive, then roll over sideways onto the bottom bunk and flake out. I have often wondered what became of him. Does anybody else recall meeting this bloke.

Cheers, Archie.

i did my first trip to Greece with Ken Ashton. I met him in Brindisi whilst waiting for a Frag Line boat, an old Manchester cattle carrier I think. he helped me with the captain of the port paperwork then he had a puncture on his Scania climbing out of Patras. He got my spare wheel. I got a brand new rim and never saw him again, but met his brother several years later who told me he had died. I changed his wheel while he bought the beer :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi, Ken,
Well mate if I were driving down the A38 and I saw a pair of legs like that I’d stop anytime.

Heres a picture I’ve been asked post. It shows three South Wales based drivers on a middle east trip many years ago. We know who they are but do any of you old hands recognise them?
Neil.

Another couple of Welsh lads, pic courtesy of my mate Del Martin. Late '70’s. En-route to Baghdad but pic poss taken in Yugo.

Regards,

Mark.

Hi Kenny, hope you are keeping well along with Christine, I learnt that you had an undesirable on board on route to Brendisi recently  Regards Fred

Newmercman, Mark your comment about some of the drivers in the USA making Egg on Legs look anorexic is so true, quite frankly it scares me when I go into a truckstop and see the size of some of these drivers getting out of their cabs, not to mention the fact that most look like a heart attack waiting to happen, a lot of them would never pass a uk medical and the thought of them flying down the road at speeds of up to 75-80 mph as many do is worrying.

A few companies I have worked for in Australia have a 3 year medical, and BMI ( body, mass, index ) is something they are very strict on. And it would seem the whole country is paranoid about type 2 diabetes as well, not that you would know to look at at some of them.
