Dumb question I know but is there still much call for the Mid-East run? or has it been superseeded by containerisation? What are the roads across Turkey and the like nowadays? Much better one would assume?

Looking at the photos on the TopRun site (go to the 2010 index and scroll down to “On the Road - Switzerland to Iran”) it would appear that there has been quite an improvement to what they were over 30 years ago. To be expected, I suppose ![]()

I was in Adana three years ago and it was great
…I also pass through Istanbul Airport quite frequently. Indeed things have changed a lot in Turkey, I think it is called progression, yes the roads have improved (Thank God) Istanbul Airport is fantastic with a sensible smoking area (unlike Heathrow)…and most of the younger generation no longer have the compulsory moustache………but sadly Turkey is no longer a cheap place

What an absolutey brilliant read
Best book I have read in a long time
Well done Ash, a labour of love I’m sure

Found the chapter about ‘Destination Doha’ very interesting as that was a documentary I watched as a relatively new Class 1 driver and would have given anything to have a go at the Middle East work
But it was never going to happen
Never in the right place at the right time
and then family comittments meant a week away from home in the UK was causing stress in the relationship, never mind 12 weeks

Great Book Ash
All the best

There is a downside though, now I want more, so how about digging into Oryx, PIE, White Trux, OHS, Priors, Carmens, Hicks, Whittles etc, shouldn’t take you longRight: Time to explain…Don’t know if you started reading my threads about my book way way back about 2 years ago… but it had all started back in 2002/3 after I had been “helping” a mate (now EX mate) write a book about the Middle East in general; All the firms, the routes, the customs, the job, the trucks, etc etc. Bit like a rough guide. Over time his interest seemed to fizzle out and to cut a long story short, that “project” just kinda’ stopped. Thats when I decided to do my Astran book. To this day, he still has all the material for his book but sadly I don’t think it will ever come to fruition
Whether I should do “my own” book about all the firms you mention, is a little in doubt because of my mates work. I’m just not sure if I should…As there is the chance (very slim mind) that he could finish it off…There were alot of people who gave him info and photos, but nothing ever came of it. Great shame really as it had the makings of a very interesting book!Anyway, so glad that you approve of The Long Haul Pioneers. I’m chuffed
Ash.
First things first Ash, first class book, just what the lorry drivers ordered.
Now then, surely your “ex mate” should wake up and smell the coffee, ie; the success of " the long haul pioneers ", and let bygones be bygones ( hopefully its not gone too far ) And one way or another just for the sake of the nostalgia he possesses, and could re-create for an already eager readers of your last project, you both could be sitting on another potential best seller . . . . .
Got my copy thursday , had a quick look thru but dont want to start reading it yet because i know i wont put it down , it looks better than i imagined. So many great photos
Hi Ash… well i have finally read the book . great read… I does make you think just how hard the early days was… you cannot Imagen being stuck four two week’s waiting for custom’s or someone to sign a bit of paperwork lol …I would of loved to been given the chance to have gone out there… I remember seeing some of the trucks in Dover I’ve… waiting to clear custom’s or or waiting to ship out… you could always tell one because they looked like real battle wagon’s with there large belly tanks side lockers and that’s just the trailers lol …can i ask you how come there is nothing about the famous Mr Hooper… as i can remember meeting him in Dover docks on my first trip to Italy… waiting on the famous step’s going up to custom… I was talking to some driver’s in front of me trying to get some advise about driving abroad… they told me all about how the police like to fine you and the toll booth’s like to short change you… and how you have to be careful where to park up at night… well when they had sorted there papers at DFs they went back to there trucks and i was stood there thinking Dam have i made the right choice going abroad as i was only in my early twenty’s… when Mr hooper looked at me and said … listen son what you want to do is listen to everything those bloke’s have told you and and then forget about sixty percent of it… he then went on to say in the end just take your time … watch what is going on around you look at your change all time if you are tired park up and have a sleep and just keep yourself and your truck safe … Great bloke in two hours i had gone from thinking ■■■■ i really do not want to do this to this is going to be such an adventure
…as he walked away i said where are you going mate … to which he turned and loooked at me and said he was only doing a local job to Germany
It was only after a few trips and talking to some other drivers i realised to him Germany was only a local job lol …I remember seeing him a few times over the next ten years or so … i remember seeing his Astrans ford transcontinental in Dover he was cleaning his lights i think… i said Hi …he just looked at me and said so how did your Italian trip go !!! Great bloke… As i said mate great Book cannot wait for the next one
Since it’s launch in June, sales of The Long Haul Pioneers has been remarkable!
To date we have sold 3886 copies. 880 of those have been during November! And 700 were sold in October. I am blown away!
The book is now out of stock, all but for a few places (Internet sites). Another quantity (of reprints) has been ordered but they will not be availabe until early January.
I still have 6 or 7 copies with me, so if anyone still requires one (or more), send me an email and I’ll sort it.
Cost is £30 and that includes p&p.
If you’d like a special message writing in the front, let me know.
First come, first served on these last few copies.

Hi Ashley, I got my copy a couple of months ago, great pictures of KVX by the way, brilliant book really enjoyed it especially about the early days of Astran and the trucks they drove. Strange to think that it was only about 7 or 8 years later when I started going there in a Scania 111 but how the trucks had changed in that time and how much more comfortable and reliable they were. Pity I could’nt have got you to autograph a copy but I had to get one from Amazon.
regards Charlie
