Do you know what Ian, I am grinning from ear to ear
What a superb idea to pose the book there!
All I need now is someone to take it for a photo at the Britiah Embassy - Kabul …any volunteers?

right i am going to get my copy of your book ash…I wonder if any body out there would consider making another film of the trip to Doha…I am sure there is a private film company that would take it on …It would be great to see how things have changed …I would of loved to have been able to have done some of the middle east … would be great to get Chris hooper in it … i met the man himself in Dover many many years ago…i was stood on the stairs going up to the customs …was very green behind the ears only been over a few times … all the drivers was telling me about how Dangerous Italy was and what routes to take and all that … when they went … Chris tapped me on the shoulder and said … Listen son listen to everything those blokes tell you then forget about eighty percent of it. just take your time make sure you park somewhere where there is other trucks and not down some dark place out of the way and you will be safe … we then went into the wheel house for a coffee … and he said he was just doing a local run … lol he was off to greece i think what a great bloke

Old Pond (my publisher) has completely sold out of books. Next batch arrives late Sept, but you could try Amazon - type in “the long haul pioneers” - they are selling for around £20 at the mo.
Have you got a good copy of Destination Doha? You should get one mate! Best film EVER made if you ask me (and hundreds of others)!
RIng Old Pond 01473-238200. They’ll sort you one out.
Interestingly, a modern version of Destination Doha has been disscussed, but not sure of any outcome as yet. There are still lads going to Doha and the film co would compare the “old and new” routes… a long way off, but “watch this space” as they say.
Chris Hooper is fine and driving for a Dutch fridge co. I spoke to him recently. He’s running throughout Europe nowadays on what he calls “very local work”!
i just got home from work and my book has arrived , so if you could just keep the noise down while i read it … thankyou. ![]()

All joking aside Amos
you made me late for work today, I sat up until 4am reading your book, had to punch through the night to make up some time, still it was well worth it, it’s a fantastic book, I’m up to page 180 already, I bet there’s stuff in it that even the Astran boys didn’t know, being that I do a bit of writing myself I’m quite critical, but you’ve done an amazing job, well done mate & thank you ![]()
There is a downside though, now I want more, so how about digging into Oryx, PIE, White Trux, OHS, Priors, Carmens, Hicks, Whittles etc, shouldn’t take you long ![]()
Hi there Ash, you don’t know me from Adam but I’d just like to say thanks for an excellent book. We’ll never see times like it again, I did find it a bit sad the fact that GB manufactures so little thses days most of the Astran loads go from Spain and Italy. During the 1980’s I made many trips to the Middle East, Ipswich, kings lyn etc- you know the sort of thing (?)

Right: Time to explain…Don’t know if you started reading my threads about my book way way back about 2 years ago… but it had all started back in 2002/3 after I had been “helping” a mate (now EX mate) write a book about the Middle East in general; All the firms, the routes, the customs, the job, the trucks, etc etc. Bit like a rough guide. Over time his interest seemed to fizzle out and to cut a long story short, that “project” just kinda’ stopped. Thats when I decided to do my Astran book. To this day, he still has all the material for his book but sadly I don’t think it will ever come to fruition ![]()
Whether I should do “my own” book about all the firms you mention, is a little in doubt because of my mates work. I’m just not sure if I should…As there is the chance (very slim mind) that he could finish it off…There were alot of people who gave him info and photos, but nothing ever came of it. Great shame really as it had the makings of a very interesting book!
Anyway, so glad that you approve of The Long Haul Pioneers. I’m chuffed
Ash.
