Assessments - do you only get 1 shot

I’m wondering if you go to an assessment for a company and don’t pass it would they give you a 2nd (3rd) chance on a later date or would they informally ban you as they’ve already seen you as crap driver? Kinda tired of class 2 (lack of) work right now so I’m thinking about jumping over to class 1 but I haven’t seen the inside of an artic since my test in July so it’s unlikely I’ll pass first time and don’t want to close any doors by just casually walking in to do assessments I have little confidence in passing (mainly because reversing). I could get a cpl hours of training with a driving school as long as they’ll teach me to actually reverse (at a 90 degree angle etc.) and not do the stupid S-bend over 100 yards to boost my skill/confidence a bit. Current co. won’t let me climb in an artic before 6 months have elapsed since the passing of my test (wouldn’t want someone with fresh knowledge/skills now why would they, better wait for 6 months)

I know a local company (mostly Romanian cowboys) who will take me via agency without assessment (I doubt they even checked my license last time) but they do city multi drop on curtainsiders, I could go there to get some XP but like I’m saying the work is bottom of the barrel and the money is I believe in the region of £10 p.h. for class1 with no overtime/night pay

Main question - can you re-try assessments with the same company again at a later point in time?

my current employer I failed the first assessment hit 2 kerbs less then a mile from their yard. phoned the hr department straight up after failing first one rebooked for week later and past. Your case get the assessments booked go tell them you haven’t driven class 1 since your test then seem to give you pointers during the assessment. most big companies will send you out with another driver for a week or 2 to gain experience.

That’s a relief to hear! I guess it depends on the company themselves, but it’s encouraging to know there are some out there who will give you a 2nd chance.

Congrats on getting it done

IF your straight forward and honest with the Assessor about your experience / ability,he/she will or should give you abit of leeway and take that into account. Again if you fail, the Assessor may, and only may, tell why you failed and again might tell you to try again at a later date when you have more experience.

Thank you in your case get the assessments booked go tell them you haven’t driven class 1 since your test they then seem to give you pointers during the assessment. most big companies will send you out with another driver for a week or 2 to gain experience. but remember to drive like you did on your test you will be fine. on the reverse remember to use all the space so if you can do a straight reverse onto the bay do it instead of a complicated 90 degree reverse to make it easier for yourself.

I had an assessment recently with a big company. 5 minutes in, a car made a tight turn almost impossible, and i ended up kerbing it. I was gutted and told the assessor I cant believe I just did that. He kept quiet and i did the rest of the drive, put it on a bay in one, turned to the assessor and said, I still cant believe I hit that kerb, what a waste of a journey here and your time. He turned to me deadpan and said, ‘What kerb?’! He said he should have failed me, but he looked at the rest of my drive, and the circumstances that forced the kerbing and said he would pass me!

In my experience, if you are on a paid assessment - you get one crack per year at it. Fail - and you’re done there for another year.

If it is an UNPAID assessment on the other hand - it doesn’t cost them much more to let you have multiple goes in one year, providing that the “fail” is for a reasonable reason, like “bad position at roundabout” - with no major ■■■■-ups like “mounting the pavement” or “forcing a vehicle to brake hard” etc…

That’s the way it should be. Hitting or mounting a kerb is not necessarily a fail on an assessment or even on a driving test. It all depends on the circumstances at the time. However a driver should not let another driver force them on a kerb. They should just stop and wait till they can make the turn safely. In certain circumstances an examiner may tell you to mount the kerb.
If a driver mounts a kerb and has clearly seen what is happening in the mirror and has controlled his speed correctly and there is no danger to anyone or anything then it is usually not a problem.(minor fault)

A for the main op question… Company policy and decent assessor should decide.

if you fail then its only down to company policy.
your assessor is usually just the brown nose rat or chief duddly do good asslicking jobsworth for whatever company your going with.
after you fail, then its only company policy thatl decide as and when your able to try again .
your assessor will just get told when he is going out with someone for 20 mins or whatever and to fill in his form at the end of it.

Probably very true in a lot of cases DD. You know when a TM picks his favourite driver just because he has not had an accident for a while.
Problem is said driver assesses on his style of driving which is probably not up to scratch.
Probably also has no idea how to talk to a driver being assessed but thinks he knows it all because he has been chosen to do a job that he’s not qualified to do.

isnt it a pity that the road haulage association and government powers that be cant decide to make it a legal obligation that before the entire uk transport lgv driver industry can allow any drivers onto the public highway that they cant insist on them passing their test and assessed by the one company to pass them with that one company being you.
mabey then you wouldnt keep droning on and on about everyones sub standard driving practices at every available opperchancity . ( obviously except yours of course.)
i wondered how long it would take for your inevitable reply to my previous post, and voila, there it is,as predictable as tomorrow…

Interesting DD. You make a post wondering when I will reply and then when I do you say my reply is inevitable. Simple solution is surely not to start the process or just ignore my reply.

Oh and the standard of driving is abysmal on the UK’s roads. Maybe if drivers improved I might shut up.

its never a question of wondering when you reply depending oon who posts what previously…
its very predictable ans is the inevitable drawing any and every topic into the poor standard of drivers and how they havent been trained or assessed properly also by incompetent instructors.( in your opinion).
but do waffle on old chap as it tends to pass the time on quiet days.

That’s not fair. Not all my posts are about bad driving. I remember when I posted a photo of a bus/truck from when we were in Sweden and you told me I had not been there.

Best friends now swapping photos

Yep

if the OP is seriously worried about his (or her) skills then why not book an assessment - obviously out of their own pocket - with a driving school? That should identify any bad habits that might have crept in since passing the test.

If it helps, think of it as revising for an exam.
