Asda jobs

Asda to create 5,000 jobs in 2012 The new jobs will come as part of Asda’s £500m expansion plans

Supermarket chain Asda has announced plans to open 25 new stores and three depots, creating 5,000 jobs this year.

There will be a new depot in Rochdale, an existing one in Falkirk will be replaced and one in South Elmsall in Yorkshire, which was bought from Netto, will be revamped.

It also plans to extend and refurbish 43 of its existing stores.

Asda, which is based in Leeds, currently employs 180,000 staff across 528 stores and depots in the UK.

Asda is the UK’s second biggest supermarket chain, behind Tesco. It is owned by the world’s biggest retailer, US firm Walmart.

Asda said the jobs would be part of a £500m expansion drive, which would increase its selling space by 600,000 square feet.

It said that the new depots would reduce the distance travelled by its delivery drivers by one million miles a year.

It follows a big year of expansion for Asda in 2011, as it converted the UK stores of the Danish discount retailer Netto, which it had bought for £778m.

Seeing investment is always good especially in the financial times we live in. Looks like a supermarket world war might be brewing

I noticed the other day at Asda Portbury cdc that they have some of those little trailers with the rear axle steering and they were new, never seen them there before so maybe they are buying smaller shops/garages maybe.

Do Asda outsource for their drivers?

Usually take the warehouse workers with LGV licences on first

Great news on the job front, but I feel sorry for the poor sod who gets to stand at the tills holding that finger sign showing a quiet checkout. Must be as embarassing as walking around a city centre holding a sign for golf sales, secondhand books etc…
Could be worse I suppose, they could be a “greeter.”

that will please all the builders, computer it, and solictors. they can all look forward to brighter prospects stacking shelves.

The depot that they announced in Rochdale is half built anyway. They haven’t spent any money on Wigan and it’s become a mess, then they needed another depot as Wigan ain’t big enough anyway and they were planning a big development at Wigan which involved building on half of the existing site which appeared to hit planning permission problems and looks like this super depot at Rochdale (which is massive) is the solution for them. Don’t know what they will do with the skem chill depot though. A lot of the ‘desk managers’ were given their 90 days notice b4 xmas as they are bringing in that computer program ‘paragon’ to run the trucks for them, good luck with that haha

i presume those little trailers will be for all the old netto stores wont it, plus i hear co- op is a possible take over target for asda , and their stores struggle with a horse n cart to get into let alone a 45ft trailer

Can’t see Asda being interested in the Co-op ,it would mean Co-op getting out of the food game? Altho to be fair they are up against World class competition. I think Asda alone could squeeze all the life out of them making the shares worthless?

They dont save much,as the Milage ASDA saves is now down to the Supplier, because from Glasgow to london is it the same Way,not matter if the depot is in watford or Milton Keynes, and that counts for every single Product which has to be carried from the Production Factory to the Customer,
but
Thanx ASDA for making more Jobs
Will straight go shopping now

lol i managed for last 15 years with a 45 foot fridge doing netto stores lol… we had one rigid at elmsall to do poynton and walkley and that was it… im on agency now for asda and i hear there drivers whinge like hell about the old nettos lol…cant get in here its tight there lol…theyve got half a dozen rigids now to cover some old nettos as they have been deemed rigid only even tho they were always serviced by 45 footers…

one thing i did notice this weekend at cdc at normanton there was a bit on the big tv in the drivers office bit saying that wincanton were going to be partners at the new rochdale depot with norbert dressingtable taking care of the asc(rubbish/recycle) as they do at all other asda dc’s…

I worked at ASDA adc Washington for 3 years until made redundant along with 120 other drivers, well done GMB union. Three weeks after the 90 days I got a letter asking if I wanted to go back! Starting again with the 13 weeks at 90% pay etc. I threw it in the bin. Went back with an agency last year after 6 years to find the same drivers still complaining about the same things. It’s all local stuff now doing 2 runs a shift at most.

What’s the difference between an ordinary ASDA employee, and an ASDA ACE?

ive done netto’s from donny as well and they are a doddle, i would much rather do the netto stuff than asda stores.

You do know that Asda is really the British arm of Wallmart, which is the biggest private employer in the world with over 2 million employees, and is the largest retailer in the world

that 5000jobs isnt quite right more like 2500 new jobs and most of them will be part time hours of 13 hours a week ok for collecgde students or mums/dads who need a bit of cash while kids at school but no good for family people who need a full time job.

Asda ACES are the cleaners.

Who’ll run the transport? Anyone know?

Might sign on with ADR for NFT, and also give Clipper Logistics a shout, they do the George stuff I think, but who actually does ASDA work?

ASDA in Washington used to be run by Wincanton for the first 10 years, then they took it over themselves in 2002. All 3 depots, chilled, ambient & George are now run by ASDA. Having had a 6 year break and going back with an agency I found some of the agency lads had been going every week for 4 to 5 years and never been offered a job.
It’s the easiest job ever if you are prepared to sit around for long stretches.
