I was in two large Transport Regiments, 1 Sqn 10 Tpt Regt and 7 Sqn 27 Tpt Regt. I loved it, but driving in the RLC is very limited. You are either getting hammered for operational tours or you are on the vehicle park doing A jobs. You might be lucky and get the odd detail once a month but most of the time you are keeping the trucks maintained. The Army now use civilian drivers for all the best jobs. The RAF have a lot more interesting places to be posted to, the accommodation is 100 times better, the chicks are a 100 times better looking, the food is 100 times better (we had Sergeants serving us at Brize Norton when I was on my Parachute Course) and they do all their own transport. Also I’m sure PT is an individual thing, not like when I was in the RLC, having to do Sqn PT Tues, Weds, Thurs and Battle PT on a Fri.
I want to do Transporting driving the LGV’s and transporting tanks or fuel or what ever im in 2 minds i would want to see my family so which enables you to do this often?
im not to botherd about pay becuase if your in the army what is there to spend it on really? part from getting bladderd and buying clothes
I spent 10 years in the South African Army and it was a brilliant time. Started out in the Infantry then joined the Parachute Regiment and then onto a special forces unit . Travelled all over the place even went to the States, had some good laughs, and made friends I will never forget.
But…
There were days when it was horrific and it still gets to me.
Overall there’s a mixed vote some people say RAF and Army which gives you most time off and lets you see family often and just to have a good laugh and always driving the trucks as thats what i want to do
Layby Larry:
As an Ex Airborne warrior all I’d like to say is, CRAP HATS one and all.
Pah! Para’s had 'em for breakfast when I was attached to 5 AB Bde in Aldershot in the 80’s.
Not trying to stir it up or anything but why can a royal marine get the para’s wings but a para cant get the dagger?
when i was training as a chef at aldershot for the navy there were loads of para’s wearing t-shirts with “god is airborne” on them, my instructor (a C/SGT RM) got one made up with “god is airborne” on the front and on the back had “cos he’s a fanny and failed the commando course”, it didnt go down too well in the pubs but caused a bit of a stir to say the least!
I was in the army for 5 years, what a complete waste of time, people stacking shelves were on more money than me, even when i was on my sandy climate wages, terrible…
To be honest dont bother, raf maybe but army no way, or do what some people i no do, join get all the licences then leave, but then i spose minimum 3years in army aslong as ya 18
Fair play to you Joshh. When most of us were in the forces (self included - 9 years) there was a small risk of being sent to an active situation. However you kids of today that are contemplating joining up pretty much know you are going to be in the firing line. So which ever you decide on Joshh, i for one salute you and wish there were far more honourable and decent young folk in this country you will be representing.
BUT take the Queens Shilling and be ready for what they pay you for
Go where your told
Do what your told
SHOOT what your told
KILL what your told
People go in love it and when it comes to crunch they say " I didnt join to Kill someone " Well thats what Armys Navys and Air force’s DO.
So If you can do the 4 rules above you’ll be fine… If not then stay home
Wow Lol i dont want to be on front line i just want to do logistics Lol
now a days josh there is no front and rear line as such. the enemies of our country now dont define front lines and rear support, it is all front line stuff now mate. no one can sit a hangar waiting for a job now. we all do patrols and get shot at at some stage or other!
