Army or RAF

Well at the moment when i leave school i would love to go in either the Army or the RAF and do Logistics, but i read through both websites’s about pay and the role’s but im unsure which is the best.
So which would be the best one to go for for as in traveling, pay, benefits etc.

Thanks and all answers will be appreciated!

Hi Joshh
Army, I did 14 years(1980-1994) 10 years in the REME, (Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers) then transfered to the RAOC ( Royal Army Ordnance Corps) which then became the RLC (Royal Logistics Corp)
The RLC has several different trades.
I know things have changed some for the better some for the worse.
If you want more info PM me and i’ll gladly talk to you more about life in the Army

air force= imo a nicer uniform

depends how you want treating, like a human being? thens its got to be the raf, living conditions etc all much better, but then everyone will have there own opinion, its down to you in the end

No probs.
Look forward to answering your questions(not too many I hope)

i agree spent some time at pirbright. sleeping in those nasty huts the door on the out side didn’t even close and was banging all night beds were crap all the blokes in two big rooms. no hot water scummy lavs and a filthy bath. good assault course and good grub. but thats the same every where

raf benson on the other hand is a palace. we got a room each with. sock horror a basin, mirror, and decent lavs and showers

Like the RAC!!!

i would say the RAF mate as you will be treated better and to be blunt, you wont be in so much harms way. (army officers send soldiers to the front line, RAF airmen send officers to the front line).

you will be able to develop a lot more in the RAF as they will push you to get qualifications.

this is purely my opinion and you (and your folks) will have to decide.

good luck whatever you decide mate

Did 15 yrs in the RAF, Happy days would recommend it to anyone

If you want travel join the Navy, they are never at home
If you want a structured career join the RAF, their life is fairly well mapped out when they sign up
If you want to drive a truck or work in Logistics join the Army,
When you say logistics what do you mean? There is Warehousing, supply, Transporting, Controlling etc etc, in the Army different units do different jobs, The Royal Logistics Corps would be where you want, but it is made up from the old Royal Corps of Transport, The Royal Army Ordnance Corps, Some sections of the Royal Engineers and the Catering Corps, and all of these were made up of different types of units like Maritime, postal, Air Dispatch, Transport and movements and freight services etc etc, to be honest I loved my time in the RCT as a Driver Radio operator, but times have changed a lot since I was there. you should talk to the local Army and Air Force careers offices near you for advise

Good luck what ever you choose, as long as you are prepared to get shot at it isn’t a bad job. I don’t know many people who have been in the Forces and not looked back on it with fond memories, and found some good friends in the process

yeah i would agree. but just be wary of the careers people afterall they want you to sign up and will emphasise on the good bits. keep an open mind. as you are 15 why don’t you start by joining your local army or air cadets. that will give you a good insight into the life style the drill and generally give you a good idea and some good experiences too

Oh I forgot to mention, if you want to earn some good money stay at school get a good education and join as an officer, because there are no rich non commissioned soldiers sailors or airmen… The money is not good, but they feed you clothe you, give you a bed and take you away on holiday if you like sports like skiing sailing and adventure training

Ex-RLC Driver/Vehicle Specialist and Tank Transporter…

It’s absolute crap, I spent a large amount of my time as a Dvr/VS working alongside the RAF In Northern Ireland. Whilst I was messing about with their trucks, covered in mud, sweat, blood and tears, they swanned about in their flip flops drinking pop and going parachuting every other day.

When I became a Tk Tptr I spent my time sat at the side of airfields up and down the country, chaining down, then un-chaining tanks for the sake of practice, whilst watching the RAF coming and going, doing courses, driving rally cars, go-karting, mountain biking, all sorts of fun stuff.

Whenever I went off to the hot and sandy, I spent two to three times longer out there than the longest of the RAF lads, they had much more important things to do, like practising their golf swings and attending moto GPs.

On the plus side, I’ve got every licence going as well as some handy stuff like Hiab and ADR too. I’ve not used most of them since I got them, but hey, I didn’t pay for them.

They will bull you to death about how great the army is.

I joined the army cadets an got totally disillusioned about the regular army.

It’s got to be the army from my point of view, however I’m biased, I spent 7 years in the army. You get good and bad times but as you grow older, you only remember the good times through a alcoholic haze :open_mouth:

Got friends and family that have covered all 3 services.

This is the assumptions I get from them
Army - Treated like ■■■■, youve either got to have something missing or enjoy being treating like ■■■,
But saying that my cousin went in at 16/17 as a private and now is a Warrant Officer, he does his 22 in January and has been asked to stay on as they are short,
A mate has done about 15 years and teaches people how to jump out of planes, Coolest job in the world for me :sunglasses:
Had another cousin who went in as an officer and came out as a Captain, he hated it.

Navy - Bit more humane, my brother in law was on the Subs, when he left he struggled to find work as he was over qualified,
He started at Portsmouth, and ended up at Faslane via Rosyth.
RAF - A few mates have been in and after leaving have got excellent jobs in their fields, Treated decent, well looked after and seem to be able to live a little out of hours
2 of them made a fortune exporting electricals out of Kuwait, and I mean a fortune.

If I could go again, I wouldnt bother with the army

be carefull with the RLC, the pioneers are part of them now, they’ll teach you how to build walls but you’ll also be one of the first in to a war zone to kill the opposition before you can build the walls.

It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it? and that seemed to be Chiz.
So RAF it is then Joshh
They really have got it right, send the officers to War and stay at home having a good time.

That’s the RAF for you!! I was part of a Tri-Service Police unit down in the Falklands. The RAF Police didn’t have a clue how to nick people as their main role is airfield security :open_mouth: It took a good RMP NCO like myself to show them how to nick and rollock squaddies properly

Well
