SCWS worked out of scotland street in Glasgow , Graham Howit was one of the transport managers but left and set up howright with Bill Wright of Bowling. Most of the clearance houses around Glasgow were owned or part owned by John Hodson of Penrith he nickname was popeye he also opened a restaurant in glasgow near charing cross
Who was this John Hodson of Penrith
.
Would that be the same Bill Wright who still owes me and countless others money .
Dave.
Alex Stewart run out of Bogmoor Road , the yellow 111 was Tommy McMillans in Alex Stewarts colours , Tommy and Alex Stewart were friends, the only drivers i knew who were on it were either Sammy Fotheringham or Tam Finney both from East Kilbride, It would tip Birmingham or South Wales and then pick up brand new electric milk floats from Tredegar !!!
John “popeye” Hodson from Penrith had his fingers in nearly all the clearance houses in and around Glasgow. I still remember Princess Dock with the clearance houses , Tom Laverick and Russ Don and Graham Howit

Is who still around ?
John Hodson, are there any clearing houses left.
No, not that I know off only monarch in Finnieston street
.
Tom Laverick was set up in Princess Dock in a portacabin, Tommy Gilmore worked with him, Tommy Gilmore was ex Hipwood and Grundy who had a depot on Tollcross Road, Tommy Gilmore ended up working as Renwicks Transport Manager off South street in Clydeholm Place. Aidrie was Hodson as well , the name will come back to me, Graham Howit was in the KGV As Howright, Laverick as T Laverick and Russ Don was Jed Russells ex Wife this was cicra 75/76
Er ya goo Wulli Mac, another one from Clelland or is it Cleland ?
I wondered when somebody would mention A1 but I thought that they had a depot in Grangemouth. I remember seeing them lots of times in I.C.I.
In the early 70s Blue Dart had a depot on Renfrew Road in Paisley ( next to the Vitafoam factory ). They had six Volvo F88s with sleeper cabs on the C.P.C. Brown and Polson contract running from Trafford Park up to Scotland, they often returned with United Biscuits from Dundee and tyres I.I.R.C. from Goodyear. When they got the Volvo’s the union made the company take the beds out because it was unfair on the other drivers who had none sleeper cabs. We went out on strike for half a day over this and the result was that we all ( including the Volvo drivers ) got an extra 50p a night on our night out allowance. B.T.W. they also put the bunks back inthe Volvo’s.
At the time we would park on the lorrypark in Paisley opposite The Bungalow pub near the Chivas place. ( I think it was Chivas Regal or could it of been Chivas jam )
I only ever met Frank White once, he offered me a job but before I met him I had heard that he was the only British hauler who went back to Iran and got all his trucks back after all the British trucks had been impounded by the Ayatollah Can anybody confirm this ?.
Also, Frank told me that after Iran he moved to Southern Rhodesia which is now Zimbabwe and ran a fleet of trucks there but thats another story. Can anybody confirm this.
Finally ,didn’t Kay Goodfellow have a depot in Glasgow and was Rob Roy Transport a Scottish company or a Manchester company ?.
P.S. Can you still get those lovely square sausages at Crawford John.
Regards Steve
Oh Blue Dart used to see them at night on paisley road west, along with coats trunkers, think Jack Conn was there then or Jessica Walters. Didnt blue dart do two beattocks as a night shift ?
Anglo scottish was on london road run by Popeye Hodson the bungalow is still there I think down from chivas whisky,
Didnt Blue Dart trunkers reg start with GNE I remember 187 and 188
There is nothing wrong with your memory Wille Mac. .
How could you remember after all this time that the rego’s of the Volvos were indeed GNE
I know that the Manchester night trunkers did do a night Scotch so you are probably right about a Beattock change over.
Spent many a night parked by Leith Docks and met a few C.W.S. drivers who knew the safe pubs, clubs and fish shop’s.
.
Was Thistle Transport Services anything to do with this John Hodson?
klunk/■■■■■■■■
Thats a good thread of a reminder on Scotish hauliers heres a couple more Stampers of Rutherglen one o three brothers another at Culgaith.
and the third at Penrith who is still going. then theres McNeils in Glasgow both McNeils and Stampers did the Middle east.
Who did Stuart Cameron buy out in Newton le Willows i spent many a night in that yard behind the working mens club Bill Mol■■? something like that .
I also remember the old lad in charge at Drymen a real hard old scotsman wa used to gothere for whisky 20ft boxes loaded for either Southampton or Tilbury the haulage rate was £290 down and we used to do 3 round trips a week in a bubble
the bubble
Where Stampers Scottish? I could never understand why a Penrith family ran a separate company based in the Glasgow suburb of Rutherglen.
Stampers of Rutherglen always seemed to be carrying containers, same livery as the Penrith company.
Thanks Jim,
Wonder what H & S would have to say about that method of unloading to-day.
Dave.
