Are They Having a Laugh

How can you discuss your wages before you go for the interview ,there maybe various shift patterns available, nights or days ,inc w/ ends ,long runs ,short runs ,do you want extra shifts ,4/4 off etc ,until they’ve spoke too you about what they can offer/ what you want your just making a stab in the dark about wages .
Turn up and ask a couple of there drivers the full sp on job / wages etc then make a decision ,not after a quick chat with some bird out the office :unamused:

Had a call from a very large company today who i applied for a job with ! so far so good so we have a quick chat and i ask what the money is she says i cant discuss that on the phone but you will be told at the interview she then goes on to inform me i will have a 2 hour driving assessment followed by an interview so i said surely that’s the wrong way round after all after i have the interview the remuneration or something else may not be what imm prepared to accept likewise i may not be what you are looking for making the assessment drive a pointless exercise she then says in a rather upperty tone do you want a job or not my reply was i don’t no as i have no information to make that decision she then says why did you apply then i reply it was a speculative enquiry needless to say i wont be taking that any further really do they expect you to use your digi card for am assessment so your current employer is aware that your looking for another job when you don’t no enough about the job to take the chance is it me am i wrong ?

You are not wrong

Why can’t they tell you the basics then that way you both know your not wasting each others time before the interview.
I’d guess wages wasn’t great to be so tight lipped.

lets be honest we all go to work for money 1st and foremost then its anything extra after that (shifts/type of work etc), without a rate its a non starter for me too, why would you bother wasting 2 hours passing a driving assessment to be told its only paying £8.25 an hour.

What ever happened to being up front with people instead of wasting every ones time

Just tell your gaffer you’re looking for other jobs then and you’ll find out what happened to it ?

Mike-c you are responsible for me laughing at your comment, which resulted in me spilling tea over myself. Can I sue or do I just get on with things??

Mike he does no as of yesterday but your comment did make me snigger a little

The natural extension of this then is why would you bother applying for a job in the first place if you don’t know what they pay.

because 90% of jobs now have the dreaded ‘competitive’ or even worse negotiable.

look at the amount of how much does this that and the other company pay threads on here, why don’t firms advertise with what the rates are? its normally because they are ■■■■.

I have applied for jobs because the work seems good or they do 4 on 4 off etc.

As have I, but when they ring & ask you to attend an interview you don’t then start quizzing them on pay rates, that’s what an interview is for isn’t it? You both have a look at each other, they explain what they expect of you & for how much, you say yes or no, it’s fairly simple. Why should they give out information to someone they’ve never met over the phone? If your time is that precious then stop wasting it by applying for jobs if you don’t know the pay scale.

I had a call today about another job and the guy asked me what I was earning when I told him he said we can’t match that so I don’t think this jobs going to be you so one question and we both no not to waist eachothers time simple really isn’t it

bjd:
Dont be silly Billy of course i don’t expect to be taken on over the phone as i have tried to say it seems pointless to go for a 2 hour driving assessment when neither me or they no if the other is suitable for the job , anyway we will agree to differ but i thank you for input and thought provoking comments and for your best wishes in my search for an alternative employment

But you applied for a driving job. Your driving skills are exactly what tels them if you are suitable or not. You can ■■■■■■■■ anything in the interview, waste an hour of their time filling in all the forms, and then turn out to be a crap driver…

So did you find out what they paid? Or did he not give out that information over the phone.

Yes i did and he was right it would have been to much of a drop

There’s a difference if you’re being head hunted directly, in which case you’re going to be tempted in by whatever they think your priorities might be, top line, more suitable or less hours, nights away or not, better work, better lorry etc or a combination of all, so they’ll be up front (whether its the truth is another question, some lie when recruiting) to get your interest piqued…this usually applies in specialist work.

If it’s an advertised job you can be fairly sure the money isn’t going to be anything to shout about cos there won’t be any vacancies if its the biz, there are exceptions to this but usually involve 2 weeks work every week to make that possibly headline top line.

If a company never advertises (incl and especially own account), then the chances are it’s going to be well paid for what you are expected to do, so knock on the door and see how you get on, they’re the ones to go for, often enough almost invisible to those not in their immediate area.

For the rest of the jobs out there, agency non jobs or the typical haulier, money is going to be within a certain band for any given area and hours give or take a few quid, can’t see the point in searching out another job paying the same money for similar hours driving a different badge about, but each to their own.

It’s the lies and spin (politician style tell them what they want to hear) of some recruitment that gets my goat, and surprisingly even older and should be wiser people fall for it time after time.

I went for a job once and whilst arranging
the interview the boss said the wage would be
the union rate…
easy no argument
