Are They Having a Laugh

Mrmack65:
Typical driver, moan moan moan, me me me

WTF?
What’s the point of doing an assesment before you know if you want the job at the rate offered. Why can’t they tell you the rate up front? Obviously will be non negotiable at a set up like that.

Sounds like BS. aimed at wheel wagglers who’ll do it for whatever they’re told they will get, and be thankful for it.

OP done right thing I’d say.

Sounds like me on a one night stand.

joker83:
Why you didn’t just show them how good you are behind the wheel which could give you more confidence when it comes to money discussion, you just make her think that you are crap driver no offence whatsoever but they want to know how you drive ££££ worth unit with load etc…

Could you just pop these rubber gloves on a have a do round with the hoover while you’re waiting for the assessor, there’s a good chap!

Shows willing I suppose?!

OP done right

Thanks fellas ! we don’t need unions we just need to get some self respect and start standing up to these company’s and making a stand

Unions are suposed to be the voice of everyone, your voice on it’s own means diddly squat to no one but you…

What would work best is for drivers to vote with their feet, as the OP has done.

I might be in the minority here, no change there then, but I don’t see any problem in it. When I went to asda they did an assessment first, there were two of us at the time, the other guy couldn’t reverse onto a bay despite being given an embarrassing amount of goes, he got sent away without having to sit at interview or the usual huge amount of form filling. Contrast that with going to Ramage, they wanted you to put your notice in, attend interview, fill in forms and spend an hour with the head fitter being shown “how we do things” and lastly, going out for a drive.
If you’re thinking of moving on anyway why bother what your current boss thinks? If it came up I would tell the truth, in that it was a job I’d applied for prior to starting & I wanted to see what it was like.

The thing is though Billy, why not just discuss wages prior to going any further? It’s what we all work for at the end of the day. The op was expected to take part in a two hour driving assessment, so that’s roughly one and a half hours worth of diesel wasted if they are then gonna go on to offer him NMW. Incidentally the Co was probably one of them big logistics providers who’ll bleat on about wasting fuel if you let it tickover more than 30 seconds, but are prepared to waste gallons of the stuff on an assessment that may not lead anywhere!

Madness I tell ya.

its not maritime you’re on about is it? competitive rates and 30s tick over b0ll0cking sounds familiar to me

I can see your point but he seems to have got all wrinkly lipped because she wouldn’t tell him the wage structure over the phone, but I’ve not come across many that do. Why not just pitch up, fill the forms in, have a drive, discuss pay? Seems fairly straightforward to me. If he didn’t fancy the pay just say so & leave. As for the boss finding out about it well so what, it could even work in his favour if he finds out he’s thinking of going.

Wrinklyliped no mate its very simple i wont consider working anywhere unless i no what ill be working for why should i give then 2 hours of my time when they wont give me any information ,working for someone is a 2 way street for my part i turn up do as imm asked and do what’s asked of me to the best of ability’s and treat then with respect for there part the treat me with respect and pay me a the wage agreed

■■?

You’re confused? - Phew. I nearly had an asthma attack reading that OP aloud!

carryfast-yeti:
didn’t she even say the wages are ‘competitive’ ? :unamused:

competetive with minimum wage, and you get a 10% discount on the umbrella fees perhaps?

Are you sure that wasn’t “Could the assessor just go around the back of you with the rubber gloves on, and then apply a hoover to the bum on seat - there’s a good chap!”

It ■■■■■■ me off that you’ll have all your time wasted at interviews with ascertaining that you are a decent enough driver - only to be shown the door when the boss can’t deal with your eccentricities.
Attending countless shortlisted interviews is expensive. Perhaps the withholding of wage rates is to appeal to some who might think "I’ve put in hours here today. I’m not turning this job down just because it’s near minimum wage and more hours per week than there are in a week!"

You are correct, it is a two way street. You applied to work for them, they didn’t headhunt you, can I take it that you were aware of what they do prior to you applying & so have some idea of what will be expected of you, when you’re invited to interview for the job you applied for you want information you’ll get at interview, I wouldn’t have told you either btw. How do they know what you’re like, or who you are, on the basis of a phone call? You expect to be taken on over the phone as you’re time is too precious to give up for interviews you apply for, good luck with that approach.
Respect is earned not given away over the phone.

Dont be silly Billy of course i don’t expect to be taken on over the phone as i have tried to say it seems pointless to go for a 2 hour driving assessment when neither me or they no if the other is suitable for the job , anyway we will agree to differ but i thank you for input and thought provoking comments and for your best wishes in my search for an alternative employment

Happy to help.

No your not wrong. Just big bro checking

Just had an e-mail via Indeed asking me to apply for a driving job. All it says is class c and ace required. Driving assessment on application.

No pay rates mentioned, not even where the job is in terms of location. Why would anyone bother applying for that ?
Then they will moan that they can’t fill the vacancy.

Truth is that the job advertiser is either too lazy to write a half decent ad, but more than likely they pay is so poor that only the very desperate would bother applying for it.
