You can count me out. My new truck goes on the road that day. If you think I’m going to have a day off unpaid while an agency driver wrecks it, you’ve another thing coming. It’s top of the range don’t you know :stuck_out_tongue:

. I said I am above being a driver, that role is beneath me… …

Sad as it might be to you, truck driving defines who I am,.

I have not suggested for one moment I am better than you, I merely state, I won’t live in a tin box 5 days a week. I won’t miss out on my kids growing up to live in said box. … i am pleased you have found a job that is good for you… the 5 days I was supposed to do I was told, do it as you please u get paid for 5 days regardless. So why would I want to drag it out? … I prefer to be there for my kids school meetings etc… in my current role I am very happy it’s a great job.

You are obviously to far above Me to take the time to correctly read my post. You stated (above) that "I am above being a driver, that role is beneath me" I have told you that truck driving defines who I am so how else I am I meant to construed your statement against mine. So you know, you haven’t offended Me, you annoyed Me with your arrogance.

I will give it to you, that being able to take a full part in my children’s lives is the one regret I have about this life, but I don’t regret the fact that My Wife has been able to be a stay at home mother, and been able to fully care for our children, without the inconvenience of an employers needs getting in the way, and that has only been possible through the work I do

You need to cause inconvenience to joe public to get anything done. That brings about pressure. Look at the Southern Train strikes…

So perhaps a go slow on the motorways would be a better bet.

Actually… they already go slow.

That said if every driver in the UK took 2 weeks holiday at exactly the same time this would put the cat amongst the pigeons a bit.

how bad would that be??,christ…imagine 2 weeks in benidorm surrounded by moaning truckies…you would be drowned in diesel before the bar oened in the morning and itd be like sitting in a a rdc with beer and chips… :open_mouth:

When an effective Union appears that knows how to play the politics and transport game properly - I’ll be inspired to join that. I reckon I don’t have long enough left to live waiting for that to come along though.

Political factions currently NOT in office but seen to be doing “good stuff” by their communities - are the ones that deserve and would get my respect, if they actually existed in 2017.
Taking Union Subs off millions of workers and then not even paying strike pay out to go alongside a concentrated military-precision industrial action campaign - means you pay in and get nothing much back.
Even the “Legal Cover” isn’t worth anything really. You can do that yourself, and probably would end up doing it yourself when the so-called “Free representation” doesn’t seem to go anywhere when you activate it.

It took me five bloody years to win my last claim I put in for, and a whole year just to get paid for having my car written off by a drunk driver in 2014. Both cases were “open and shut cases” that I’d already won 100% legally before I’d started, in a theoretical world of common sense at least, which sadly no longer seems to apply in Liberal-Elite-run Britain today.

A privately engaged law firm would do it in 1-2 years. Perhaps something can be said here in favour of “no win no fee” outfits too, in that I would imagine they don’t procrastinate to build up their fees, because they don’t get paid at all if it doesn’t get done - right?

Hammond’s changes to the self-employed NICs seem an provocative move btw…

Does this mean that the numbers up for self-employed truckers on umbrella schemes everywhere?

Blimey your right, even worse on the trip out on the Ryan air flight that may or may not land somewhere near Alicante, where everyone has paid for priority boarding so there’s no priority boarding at all.

No assigned seating so the plane is full of confused truckers not knowing which seat number/ bay to put their bums on.

The poop really hits the fan when one trucker tries to buy a ham sandwich that costs 9 bloody euros.

The poor stewardess’s have to suffer 2 hours of letching and can’t approach the rear of the plane as a roll of carpet and cable ties have been spotted.

Then once landed the rush for the passport check in involves one slow line as the second line is blocked by a Wincanton trucker trying to walk slightly faster than a Maritime one.

Chaos ensues at the luggage conveyor belt as all the truckers refuse to hand ball their own luggage and the class 2 drivers can’t handle the trolleys without bumping into each other and pulling in to soon on the trolley in front. Then there’s more delays as a group of truckers festooned in their holiday hi viz vests are sorting through identical Lidl carrier bags looking for their clothes.

Whilst all this is happening all the Stobart drivers are unconscious back on the plane due to not spotting how low the overhead lockers where and knocking themselves out.

Yep in hindsight a truckers jolly is not a good idea.

Not personally to Me, but I have seen at close quarters (working for the same company), where the union representation has worked well and reasonably quickly. One where a driver probably would have been sacked, but for the threat of a an industrial tribunal, backed up by a strong shop steward at the first disciplinary, forcing the company to re schedule the meeting to a date when a union regional representative could attend. Driver slapped on the wrist but job and service intact. Another driver who’d been involved in an accident, in which he was 100% to blame, collided with a slow moving vehicle, He had to take time off due to back injuries caused in the accident. He was advised to claim for an industrial injury (iirc) due to this being an accident at work, the union handled it all for him, and instead of him being on SSP for 6 or 7 weeks, he received his basic salary and a payment in resect of his injury. Whether you think that’s right or not, at the end of the day, why put your financial stability in peril for something that happens to you whilst at work

Sometimes its the many run of the mill cases that we don’t hear of, that the trade unions are carrying out on behalf of their members on a daily basis that should be highlighted more. Remember, it cost in the region of £1200 to go to an Industrial tribunal, and there’s no legal aid for it.

I believe that the no win no fee lawyers will only take on your case if you buy an indemnity from them, to cover their costs, I could have that wrong.

As per usual, the politicians go after the wrong people. Surely they should be tackling all the firms, who have laid people off, then offered them their rolls back on a self employed basis, thus saving themselves a shed load of expense, Holiday pay sick pay, Employers NIC, to suggest the 3 biggest. Its about time the Government says, if it looks like an employee, talks like employee, works like an employee, then it is an employee so pay your employers NIC, pay them Holiday pay and sick pay and pension.
Its business who are causing all this, not reluctant self employed people. Proper self employed people, shouldn’t be suffering the stigma of being treated as some kind of tax dodger, set up your business, invoice customers rise and fall by your own hard work, then there should be a reward. Work for one employer who sources all your work, supplies you all the means to do that work, and refuses you the ability to work elsewhere, then you are an employee, so get paid and treated like one

As usual, its business who are dodging TAX not ordinary people :unamused:

If the arbitrage channel between PAYE and SE employees is narrowed even further - then there will be no point in “outsourcing” jobs at all, because it won’t be possible in future to trick your staff into taking a no holidays, no sick pay, no insurance “job” because there are by that point too few tax advantages to the “mark” for doing so. Uber will suffer greatly - but an Uber driver worth their salt should find life getting better in a thinned-out market place… :bulb:

In my view “Self-Employed” should only apply to people who actually create the jobs - rather than be “the only person working for a sole trader”.
The very notion of “Sole Trader” needed to be phased out post war I reckon, but wasn’t done so - to massage the otherwise sky-high unemployment figures that would then be far more sensitive to large firm lay-offs in an era when overseas inward investment was hard to come by. It’s Obsolete in the Globalized 21st century FFS. This is why other nations profit from sending their tradespeople here but we don’t benefit from sending ours there. It’s not all about wages - it’s about where you live as well. Otherwise, we’d all be poncing off to Magyar to take a job on 20% of current pay - but with 85% cheaper cost of living, meaning you’ve got more money in your pocket to go and pull the abundance of birds still about in that part of the world now that so many of their young guys over above their young women have come over here already :sunglasses:

Perhaps SE sole traders such as “White Van Man” SHOULD be treated as some kind of “Tax Dodger”?
I’d rather see that than see Pensioners who’ve been paying in for yonks get told “Sorry benefit scrounger, your pension is only 12% of what you thought it would be, and we’d like you to consider deferring drawing any state pension until your 85, as times are 'ard.”

Cheers lads I had more but ran out of time:

Including how once at the hotel all the truckers became invisible to the receptionist’s.

When our band of brothers did eventually get their room keys they left the hotel looking for trucks the keys would fit.

Once rounded up and shown to their rooms all the truckers realised every electrical appliances they had needed a cigarette or hella plug socket.

How the buffet que was held up by one trucker who sat on the floor eating his dinner shouting ‘I’m on a break’, he was later drowned in the swimming pool.

Dipper Dave, you have got to write a book man, brilliant stuff.
