I did more than 2 years working shows in the UK and Europe in an R series, sometimes spending a month at a time away, I didn’t mind it one little bit… Mind you, the exhibition unit I pulled around had hot and cold running water and a full kitchen.
Chunkzilla:
People who think the R series isn’t a 'big cab ’ have obviously never had to tramp in a Renault premium, with its big engine hump, which I might add I didn’t mind. I don’t see the obsession with flat floors, for one how much time do you actually spend standing inside the thing, and secondly the hump keeps the dirt from spreading out of the drivers footwell.
I think it’s far more important to have a decent bunk than needless space.
But each to their own.
Pah ! Tramping with a Renault Premium, done that for 11yrs, Try Tramping with a Renault G290
Plenty of room under the bunk in a g290,you’re not going to stand up in though[emoji6]

Well being a young 'un I’ve never had the chance. To be fair I’d sleep in a ripper body if the money was right

Yeah, even then there was cross cab access, via getting out of one door, and back in the other

Would I go back to that, not a chance, regardless of money
I don’t do nights out,but I am beginning to hate the word tramping, nights out guys usually keep themselves clean and tidy[unless your a foreigner, met a few who stink of BO]whats wrong with saying I am night out driver, tramping sounds just that, like your being called a tramp, doesn’t it annoy you night out blokes,it would me

Not really just get on with the job.I would like to be called a roaming driver sounds better but dont think it will catch on.

Call it what you will, I don’t worry about what they call my role as long as I get paid and treated well it ain’t an issue
have tramped in both R highline & currently in an R topline , cant see the fuss surely you will only be restricted for room by the ammount of stuff you carry about with you , the topline is only an advantage if yer double manning for the room with the top bunk & with space for coffee maker & microwave, i dont use the microwave , i have a stove to cook on & boil a kettle ,the coffee maker has been removed as it’s not much use , the coffee maker & microwave in my opinion take up good usable storage space.i also have the fridge, instead of the storage drawer, id rather have the storage. IMO compared to a DAF XF or the MAN XLX the R series isnt a big cab, lots of space but when the bunks pulled out not much room & not much storage

The term Tramping is to describe not knowing from one day to the next what your next destination is, such as a Tramp might meander from one town to the next, with no thought for where the next destination is.
As for it only being foreigners or guys doing multiple nights out suffering from a lack of personal hygiene, I think you might be a little misguided, I’ve known plenty of guys who live like animals and smell even worse, then head of home to what I’m assuming is a pigsty for their nights kip
I find it incredibly frustrating, that a term that has been widely adopted for longer than I’ve been a tramper(27yrs) to describe a certain type of transport roll, that, being away from base for multiple days/weeks with no structured plan of work, other than, head in the direction that the next suitable load, seems to be affronting some drivers sensibilities. Gte real its not offensive, its a recognised transport roll

Its each to their own, but I for one use both the Microwave and the Coffee Maker, I also carry a stove, and find the under bunk fridge freezer an essential to my weeks tramping. I agree that the pull out bed is a sprat to catch a mackerel, but you don’t have to pull it out, I actually preferred the older style bed as it didn’t foul the back of the drivers seat, but if that is all I have to complain about with my present R450 topline, and that is where the complaining stops, then I really should just keep my gob shut
I will say that the new 106’s without the quarter light bar in the side window, does look like quite a decent truck, and I believe the XLX MAN are too, though I didn’t like the super large windscreen(when I had one on demo), but I’d still rather the topline Scania
I have 4/5 nights every week in a r series top liner no problem with storage I carry enough gear for 2 weeks at least just in case. I did throw the top bunk in the skip though and had cabinets fitted(thanks Ben)
I’m tramping in a Renault premium with the huge engine hump and a low roof and frankly it ■■■■■ lol. I’m on my hands and knees in the cab and from my bed I can reach the roof with my arm.

We had them new 98, they replaced our much loved Turboliner’s, they got nicknamed concussion cabs as you were in danger of hitting the roof lining if you hit a speed ramp to hard. Luckily the guvnor got Privilege Cabs next time round (3yrs)
