It was a Flat Bed IIRC, the guy who drove it used to park at the top of my road in Leighton Buzzard.
Does anyone remember Samson Transport, depot in Milton Keynes, or a couple of the people who worked there? Rob Rounce (who went on for RPL I think in mid 90’s) ■■■■ Curtis (mad as a hatter and I think lived in L- buzzard) or Dicks’ old man (J?) Curtis, he had a real “warhorse” of a bonneted 2 series blue scania and tilt doing Eastern bloc and beyond ('93 ish)? I worked for a subbie for them doing European work . Good bunch of lads there, reasonable work.
Regards,
Mark.
I have just found your chat site here and its been great reading your comments regarding Leighton Buzzard firms. Im sure Ive met a few of you who drove for Eric at ECE. For years I used to travel around with my Dad Bill Hylands, he was Erics first driver when he started up. I believe the first truck was a Ford D Series which was replaced about a year later, 1974? with a new MAN …I was lucky enough to drive a lot of the F12s and 113s that my Dad got through, EricI(Snr) and (Jnr) were great to me, I was up on the trucks when I could,(me day job was Police) they put the L Plates up and put me on the insurance. Eric had known me since I was about 5yrs and he was at J+H in Dunstable. I remember going to Eric Snr funeral and recall someone had painted up a Scania in the ECE colours for the day, it was a big turn out (ECE had since been sold a few years earlier to Bayliss). I remember a lot of the faces from those ECE days but perhaps not so many names? …Donkey, Cooperman,…jog my memory…
As a young lad growing up in that enviroment was well looked after by the other drivers, and then to drive those same trucks…
Great days with my Dad…lost him 2 years ago.
Got loads of ECE photos as well as some ABLE and HG BROWN trucks.

JLS - saw quite a bit of them in Southend - they used to haul Linpac out of the old Ecko works (recently demolished) - should imagine that finished them off when they lost the contract. In the early days of CB used to quite often speak to the Aston Clinton Haulage (Squadron) as ran up the M1.
yep they went bust in June 1993, lost Ecko, GPG, Linpac and Ford pretty much the same time, anyone know what happened to john Sullivan the owner, had a nice big house in Heath and Reach on the main road out of leighton, I heard he moved to Milton Keynes after JLS demise, I worked for them for 6/7 years.
Larry the transport manager ended up working for GPG International in Dunstable.
Big Leggy:
Request for any other Leighton Buzzard companies from the '70s or '80s ?
Can we include characters involved in Haulage & spread the area slightly ?
Tony Mongiardi, Tiny Lee, Frederick Rays Transport, Avery’s Transport - all in L.B. town. How about Howard Fawcett, Julian Mary Miles both local to L.B. ?
What about the “mileages” done in The Falcon or The Eagle pubs ■■
Come on Buzzard Boy help me out here please !!
Hullo Big Leggy,
Although I don’t come from that area, I do remember Toni Mongiari very well. Toni used to have four very smart lhd F10’s, Italian registered in his home town of Campobasso. He used to load outward for MAT (Perkins Engines) mostly to the Rome or Napoli areas, and load back usually with Pasta or Tomato Paste, Tiles, always heavy stuff for himself and mostly from his home area to England. He had some good blokes on there too, there was Franco Lienno,( a real smart Italian bloke ), Stuart, ( he had a bad leg ) and Polish Frank ( he many times took his wife Ivy with him ). I don,t really know what happened but suddenly they all dissapeared off the scene. I did see both Stuart and Polish Frank later on, both working for ACH. Tiny was on Greece when I was, although I did’nt know him at all, I do though remember Derek Rance, I think he was from nearby to you. I also remember very well Stuart Pearce. ( If it’s the same one ) I recall telling him one day in Dover about how I was buying a snatchback 3600 lhd Space Cab from Leyland Daf, and that I was finalising the deal when I had tipped and got home. The next day when I did get home, I telephoned Leyland Daf up and they told me he had been onto them to sell it to him instead. Fortunately they told him to (go away) ? and still sold it to me. Mind you that’s all many moons ago now and long forgotten.
Cheers, Archie.
