I could well be wrong, its been a while since i last used that road… I seem to remember being able to see the trucks parked there if you came from Hemel towards the Bilington Hill, just before it started to climb

Choake and sons was at the bottom of billington hill and there are houses there now. The haulier nearly opposite dawsons yard i believe was Burch Transport they ran a couple of 4 wheelers tippers and flats.

As you drove from Hemel Hempstead towards Leighton Buzzard the company on the left at the bottom of the hill – were they really hauliers ? I always thought they were something to do with laying “land drains” in farm fields !! Could be wrong as I usually am !!

JLS - saw quite a bit of them in Southend - they used to haul Linpac out of the old Ecko works (recently demolished) - should imagine that finished them off when they lost the contract.

In the early days of CB used to quite often speak to the Aston Clinton Haulage (Squadron) as ran up the M1.

Have just joined the forum, and was interested in your conversations.I worked for Fredk Ray Ltd fron 1978 to 1983 and wondered if any of you know what happened to any of the drivers when it was taken over by Biddys.
I will give you some names: Colin Cursley (Shop Steward) Reg Bassill,Bob Dearman,Bob Mackay,Ralph Reay who went on toSid Edwards,Hugh Middleton,Ro Smith,Hugh McGuiness who I think became an owner driver, amongst others. Also
another firm worth mentioning was Export & General, who came under the same banner as Rays.

There are some photos of Frdk Ray vehicles in the latest edition of ‘Classic and Vintage Commercials’ magazine, taken by Peter Davies.

Yes, I do remember Dave Warren, sadly not with us any more,he was a bit of a gentle giant really.Sid Golby I remember very well!Bit of a tyrant.I used socialise with his son Barry.

Also, the Guy BigJ unit that is in the Classic magazine PBM 252H is the first truck I drove in earnest at Rays.
Some wag put on the back of the cab inside "Bullhead or bust. …It bust!!!"Probably the best driving days I have had.

Ah Export and General a name from the past indeed. From what i can remember they came from Dunstable and perhaps some one can confirm
they ran at least one ‘Spanish’ Dodge 300 series watch them boys go!!!

They certainly did come from Dunstable and they had two Dodge K38`s.1 sleeper and one non sleeper. The rest was made up of one foden that Peter Lockett used to drive (and then Jimmy Duerr) and the rest were ERFs.
