Anyone on here worked with royal mail on the 7.5t?just wanting some idea of what type work is?
I have been told it can be decent clean graft, I’m not sure how much/how little handball is involved■■? not really sure what the pay is like-hoping to hear back tomorrow that I may be on the Christmas grind with them
not been told nothing yet whether its depot to depot work or collecting from back out in various post offices or a mix of the two - be nice to get back out in a wagon though for sure
It will be using wheeled cages (or yorks) mainly delivering/collecting between mail processing centres and delivery offices and customer colections. The longer distance work is done by the bigger trucks. No handballing as its all caged and uses either loading docks or tail lifts. You may end up inside helping others load if your duty has spare time on it but it’s all clean work.
I’ve been on recovery work & hate it, so clueless on cages,
I have heard they use cages & tail lifts, are the cages heavy to shift about? just wanting to clue myself up a little before accepting the work! any enlightenment on the job would be great all
royal mail will be my 1st “proper” job to be honest, a bit nervy about too with the weather closing in & getting a bit drastic in places
thanks m1cks that’s really helpful! really appreciated, I hope I can shift a 250kg cage now, should be able too though
I aim to make a good impression, where I’m potentially going to be the depot is only 4 mile away so travel costs will be low & its cycling distance in the good weather!

Hay, is it an agency that your going thought to get the Royal Mail work ? I heard its not a bad job to have. Sounds like good work if your new to driving as its fairly strict forward. Or so I’m told. Hoping to do some 7.5 ton Royal Mail work too some day. Witch agency is it your going thought if you don’t mind my asking ?
Any feed back would Be good to hear what it’s like and how you get on, good luck with it

This type of work wil be good for you to learn the ropes and it will enable you to make the mistakes and errors that you are bound to make. Dont be nervous , the weather is manageable as long as you take it steady. it will be good experience for you
alan I daren’t push the royal mail women about LOL
it is just agency work, i’ll defo get back on here to all to update how things are going, prob get a pic with my assigned 7.5T so I can look back in years to come & say what a great wagon it was
what I’ve been told so far is its 8 hour shifts, so that’s one 45 break or split break in that sorta time frame isn’t it
hope I get the job now, seems to be going the right direction so far anyway
should be good experience to either move forward with royal mail to class 2 work or class 2 somewhere else, I’m 33 but not done boxvan work, I’ve found driving class 2 recovery vehicles easy but the truck I drove had a rear window & rear view mirror which made manoeuvres easy, height wasn’t an issue at all to be honest, I was left to my own devices in all honesty but I didn’t like the job! too many close shaves picking people up on the motorways ■■■■ my brick a few times when cars have brushed my jacket, & car drivers haven’t realised what they’ve done STILL TEXTING ■■■■■■■■■■ I haven’t done recovery for long either, done class 2 since july 25th
a DAF boxvan is a bit blind to reverse compared to the recovery truck but at least the 7.5t is DAF is small, not driven in the dark for a long time either, when driving recovery’s I’d start at 3am & finish before nightfall nightdriving is defo a skill

Now that made me smile.
Like you, I have done recovery work and am now on Royal Mail (for a short while anyway). You will have no trouble whatsoever. Their DAFs will be easier to reverse than a recovery truck - besides, you didn’t have use of a rear-view mirror when you were loaded, did you?
If I may advise you - don’t try to drive like the RM 7.5 drivers do. They frighten the crap out of me - and that includes when I am watching them from the canteen window.
Do not worry if you are running late - stay within the speed limits. Most RM collections and deliveries run late this time of the year. Try to leave your departure point on time (if you can) but after that you are at the mercy of the traffic and conditions.
RM run a squeaky clean operation - they will never expect you to break the rules or the law. Where I work (Chelmsford and Thurrock) the other drivers are OK and everyone will help if asked.
I am the slowest reverser in the world - so what? Take your time and you will be surprised how easy it is.
Enjoy the job and enjoy getting a bit more experience.
Been working with them but on 3,5t.
As m1cks mention. If you have spare time before end of your shift
you have to help in warehouse. E.g sorting parcels, unloading other trucks or 3,5t.
Do not know where they coming from but quite often I seen 7,5t coming in
full to the roof and back door of of loose sacks with letters and parcels.
Good luck with it!
.
Mario
cheers chaps that’s super encouraging!!! like most folk there’s always a bit of anxiety when ya start a new job! I’m pretty excited about it to be honest, I dont mind handballing sacks etc I’m pretty handy at that,
got taught the “knack” by my old man, he used to be a hod carrier & cement mixer/loader/unloader of materials when he was a fair bit younger than he is now he worked the tunnels where the Italian job was filmed screeding
so far the agency are trying to line me up with class 2 work after the RM, something to do with shifting “next directorys” I presume that’ll be caged or palletised
I hope to become a regular at my local RM depot though I must admit!
thanks for the good advice onlyalan really gave me a bit of an insight
thanks to the other chap that posted the pic of the RM yorky! why are they called yorkys? is it something to do with the brand of the cages?
top guys/gals on this forum, imagine a company with all the like minded folk on here working in one depot from training newbies to fully fledged big time artic drivers with a serious dream fleet of trucks
