Anyone know about inverters for laptops in lorry?

Hi, I have bought an inverter off ebay for 12 quid to get me laptop going while I have a long wait like today and it doesnt work
The power is there but it is not getting to the laptop to charge it, the instructions say the light should turn green or there is a fault somewhere so it looks like the inverter works but the fault might be my end? I have never used anything like this before so I have no idea what I could be doing wrong. I have swiched ignition far enough for the power to be on, plued it in and turn it on I didnt think it got any harder then that :unamused:

Anyone know■■?

I can’t do the techie thing, but it sounds like a power problem - in so much as there’s not enough. Either not enough good quality power going to the inverter, or the inverter isn’t “powerful enough” to charge/run the laptop.

My first inverter would charge the laptop or run it. It wouldn’t charge while I was using the laptop, so I had to take the battery off the laptop and all was fine. The when I’d done, turn the laptop off, put the battery back on and plug it all in to charge while I drove.

I think it’s all to do with watts/amps/volts etc

Dose it have a separate earth cable? Mine dose, it needs to be clipped to some nice shinny metal or it won’t work.

Is it just a cigarette lighter charger for a specific laptop (A) or a proper inverter (B) with a domestic socket?

Picture B

If it is like B just try to plug a phone charger or small lamp in to test it.

It’s pic B
The green light won’t come on at all even with the battery off. Its 150w so I thought should be enough?? The fan is going on it but just won’t supply power :frowning: battery on laptop is dead now to so I can use my phone but its not the same :frowning:

was this item new or second hand?

Mine is the Belkin 140w as pictured but it does have a small 25amp fuse in the back although mine doesn’t have a fan

Are you sure the socket is 12v you are trying to take power from? again my unit says 11-15v input.

It is brand new yes, and it says 12th volt on packet but no power comes at all! I forgot to mention that I’m getting power from 24 socket I know the 12th socket does work though.

Thats your problem, its a 12v inverter so wont work with 24v.

So why is there no power from the 12v socket■■?

Fuse has probably blown.

Its prob drawing too much power from your 12v socket and popped the fuse. check the fuses and if it has just stick a higher AMP fuse in there.

lol OOOOPPPPSS… you probably blew it up inside unless it has built in overload protection

Blown the fuse on my socket?? FFs great, I’ve checked my phone charger and that’s it its blown :frowning:
Don’t even know where the fuse box is let alone what fuse it is
So what do I do now? I only plugged it in and pressed on I must’ve done something wrong lol

Your inverter will be drawing too much power from your 12v socket buddy. If you have a lorry manual check it and see where the fuse box is and 2nd of all check which fuse has blown. Just stick in a higher AMP fuse, IE:- It’ll most likely be 10amp, stick in a 20/25/30amp fuse, just means you’ll be able to run more from that socket.

Erm… Doesn’t is have the fues it has for a reason? Stick in a much higher one and you risk a fire as you will be drawing way more than intended

I think manufacturers tend to be over-cautious with this, I have never had a problem uprating the fuse for my 12v socket (although I wouldn’t run a kettle from it).

Only other option is crocodile clips to the battery or hardwiring it straight to the fuse box somehow or another 12v live supply. Or do it easy and uprate teh fuse, wont harm it, just let you run more from that socket.
