As im 15 i dont drive anything apart from a little go in the car now and again, but my 2 uncles are drivers and i go with one of them when im off school and i enjoy that, im predicted grade c’s at gcse so i could do alot more but i think i want to be a driver no doubt about it
Get yourself the best grades you can, mate. Biggest mistake I ever made was to doss through school, prospective employers see a smart kid with poor grades and assume (with a fair bit of reason) that if he was lazy at school he’ll be lazy at work.
Ten years down the line it don’t matter so much because you’ve got the work experience to prove your merit, but when you’re 18/22 it does; not only that, but it only takes an accident at work, medical hassles (diabetes, etc) and that’s your driving career up the Swannee, and you’ve got nothing to fall back on. You seem an pretty switched-on lad; grab the education while it’s free, the older you get the harder it becomes to learn.
Good luck.
Thanks mate, yeah i am trying my best revising for all upcoming tests and that becuase becoming a driver fails then at least i have some good qualifications to back me up on getting a another half decent Job.
i love to drive… i love the work i do as a general hal tramper.
it is hard, and its not easy not having a social life. also mates do take the ■■■■ coz i do plenty of hours, but when i tell them how much i take home… they soon shut up lol!!!
as i tell them… driving hgv is a lifestyle, not just a job…

Started driving by chance when I was sacked from being a Manager for Wethersppns My dad and bro both truckers, I used to go with my dad when he worked from Home Ales years ago when I was off school and the money is decent to. Started with Home Delivery Network and hated it! 160 parcels every day there was nothing but running around and no time for breaks litterally Paid for class two my self 2 and a half years ago and now work for WT Sea Air. Hope to pass my class 1 at my third attempt and then want to get a tramping job and really live the lifstyle of being a trucker
hello,im 29,been driving since i was 17,started on the ol puddle jumpers doing general haulage, then soon as i was 21 done me 2, and soon as i got me licence back done me class 1 and been driving em ever since, me dad used to run his own trucks, and about 25 years ago me mum and dad set up there own hgv driving school, and they are still training now!!! so think it was going to happen either way,i think its in your blood , all i wanted to do was get b,hind that wheel and go driving round all day… trouble is my little mans eight now, and he is just like i was at his age, trucks trucks trucks,so i can already guess what he will b doing when he grows up!!! and il tell uz all when i grow up
Been driving hgv’s since i was about 23 ish. I’ve got a class one licence but spend all my time in a six wheeler. I’ve tried a good few other jobs but i always hanker after driving, Guess when the derv gets into your veins thats you stuck… I like the job, being your own boss to a degree, not sitting at a desk staring at the same faces all day long, getting to see new places. I enjoy the challenge of the job more than anything.
I’m the youngest driver at this company and i see more older faces than young when i’m out and about. The only company i’ve worked for who had a really good attitude to youngsters and would give them a chance was Robert Wiseman Dairies. Well worth a shot if you need to get a foot on the ladder, as long as you can hack 2am starts anyeay…
started off driving 7.5 tonners with DHL when i was 21.loved it there.
moved county after 2 yrs and had a coupe of different crappy jobs driving rigids over a year or so.
but then i started my current job.in this one 8 yrs.driving the big one ones now and have never looked back.totally love this job.got a decent boss and a decent wagon and he pays me pretty well too.
some of my mates get a bit p1ssed off alright when they are stuck in an office and don’t want to go to work some mornings…me,i love getting up for work
I’m 23 and piloting a lovely shiney wrecker. Started as an hgv mechanic at 16, got my cat c just after my 21st and then the c+e a week later. Started this job just after i turned 22. I love it as i still get to do the mechanical work aswell as alot of driving!
I’m 28 and despite being female have always had transport in the blood, started driving for a living at 18 and have had C+E for two and half years now, currently on euro work with a bit of uk thrown in aswell (worse luck)

Im 28, been driving since I was 21. Enjoy the job alot of the time but id like to do something else… Should have done better at school I guess.
You can always go back to school. Well College, I did when I was 30, spent 2 years getting an HND in Computing, spent another 2 years in the IT sector and found out the thing I really like to do is to drive trucks. Funny old World
I know what you mean. A couple of years ago I did 2 weeks holiday cover for a garage I used to work as a mechanic before I started driving, as I had a bit of time in between leaving one job and starting another. Every time the transporters turned up to deliver new cars I kept thinking ‘Let me have a go’. I couldn’t wait to get back to driving again !.
Its only the decent wages that are keeping me driving, but to get decent wages youve got to do mega hours. My main gripe is lack of sick pay, pension and generally crappy conditions. Im feel that Ill never have enough time to spend it with my wife (and family when it comes!) and ill have to work to a ripe old age, possibly even dying before I retire. The act of actually driving a lorry is still fun and exciting, its all the other rubbish that goes with it that spoils it!
Out of my circle of friends im the highest paid, except for one friend whos a barrister! I do the most hours by far though.
Im seriously looking into other professions, teaching maybe… Ill have to do something about my personal hygene and use of bad language before I do anything about it though.
Passed my class1 in march, im 27 and cannot get a job any where only agency, fortunatly my mate’s a driver and when i can he let’s me in behind the wheel and keep my finger’s in the in the pie
23 years young here and by reading all the replys to this seems im the youngest doing european work lol… Love the job im doin as not only is it driving but i get some excersize too. Think will move onto driving full time and sitting around when im a bit older…
