Harry Monk:
I’ll just clarify my point a little.
As is quite well-known, I’m putting a truck on the road some time in the next month or so, which I will drive myself.
I will have to take a 45 hour break at the weekend, and I’ve made tentative enquiries about putting a driver on my truck at the weekend.
I would have the following choices.
A) Pay the driver £90 a day, and make £20 profit for my time and trouble dealing with the administration, making and receiving phone calls all over the weekend, sorting out problems, breakdowns and punctures etc or
B) Pay the driver £110 a day and make nothing at all for doing the above, or
C) Pay the driver £150 a day and lose £40 every time he drives out of the yard. or
D) Just park it up, go home, go back on Monday and forget about giving somebody a job.
There is nothing stopping Conor- or anybody else- putting a hundred trucks on the road and paying the drivers £150 a day, every day… apart from their complete and total failure to understand even the most basic rules of commerce.
Harry it’s not worth the hassle for £20 is it… plus having a 45 hr break means exactly that - a break from work - not to be on call to sort out problems, breakdowns and punctures as you say - surely there’s something in the rule book about that?

Exactly my point, none of the options are worth it, although I do actually have a secretary who deals with admin.

oh i understand…the only way you can get work for your truck is by doing it at a cheap rate, then you expect the driver to take up the slack.
Well, I can’t find work that would pay enough to pay a driver the £300-350 a day on top of a normal wage that you mention, but if you can then I suggest you put your own truck on the road and do it.
Didn’t say $300/$350 a day…that is for all weekend,you said I couldn’t earn it and I’m telling you I can

Harry , in life there are those that do things and those sit around ■■■■■■■■, Conor and all like him fall firmly in the later camp.
How many of the “I was on that in the 90s” brigade are still working for the same company? Are those employers still in business?
It’s a cruel world out their at the moment, and £90 a day ain’t a bad rate for an easy job, however if you feel your time is better spent whining about the old days on the internet carry on.
Ok, 1st, it’s weekend work, so £90 per day is poor, however you look at it.
2nd, it’s rediculously early starts on a weekend.
3rd, it isn’t an easy job, as others have pointed out, sometimes it might be, but more often than not it’s not. ALDI are a pain in the arris, massive queues, takes ages to check the stuff - “I’ve brought 30 euro’s of toilet rolls…” “ok, we’ll check them off, see you in 1hr 20 mins”

Sounds like good money to me, I did 62 hours and cleared just over £400, class 2 and trolleys, between 5/10 drops in the Home Counties and London Central.
3 days for that money and work, ummmm yes please
That was my thoughts. You can always top up your money with odd weekdays on agency
Would it not be better to do odd weekends on agency, especially as most of them still pay a premium for weekends?? The agency I’m on with pays at least 12 / hr on a say and at least 15 / hr on a sunday, and I still only do mon - fri, it’s hard enough gettin’ time with the missus in this job, so my weekends are pretty much my own

I appreciate your view but I have different priorities now. I am not with the mrs now and have a child to support so would rather take guaranteed work with the option of topping up during the week and having the opportunity to see my kid when I can.

Not knocking it, everybody’s different. I start a new job on Monday on lates / nights (4pm - 2am ish), doesn’t suit everyone, will barely see my missus through the week ('bout the same as when I was tramping lol), so weekends are my thing, plus most of my mates are off on a Sunday, so that’s when we do stuff. Like tomorrow, paintballing, easy to arrange when you know everyone is off on the same day

its clifton i think that has gone to muppetime.
Apologies, they both change that often i get confused…old age and all that.
If the store assistants get paid a tenner an hour Monday to Friday, what are they on when you go there on Sunday? I just couldn’t unload myself while some spotty kid on double my wage is watching. I know Mickey Young, and he does some notoriously poor work, city link, aldi and cobelfret. So the wage is no surprise

Thanks for that JD, yeah, was sacked from Maritime about a year ago, and Turners in January. New job is for a parcel firm, doing some collections in an afternoon, then a trunk run at night with an a-frame wag + drag, not sure how it’ll work out yet, wages aren’t great (although compared to what’s advertised…) so I’ll see how it goes.
I see we still got the ‘i wouldn’t get out of bed for £?’ brigade on , but strange as it may seem, i have found that i don’t actually get paid for staying in bed on a weekend where i wouldn’t be earning at all.
This job would be ideal for new drivers ‘wanting more experience’
Fair play who think the wages are low but dont knock it for the people who need the money or maybe the experience.
Think some of us forget we now live & work in a 24/7 environment & sat & sun are just seen as another day just like monday, tuesday etc…
do you really need to ‘quote’ every time this thread is so long and most of the quoting is pointless!
yes sat and sun maybe classed as a working day but 90take home for 12 hrs isnt a good wage by any standard for weekend work bearing in mind the start times, yes it maybe good for a new driver to gain a bit of experience but working every sat sun will soon get boring as even the likes of asda, tesco etc drivers get the odd weekend off.
and despite maybe being one of the i wont work for less than x amount until drivers actually stick together the industry as a whole will continue to be poorly paid.
