I’ve been let go on my ZHC at Aylesford… It seems that sideways-moving John Lewis drivers coupled with a sharp drop in shop turnover (now the panic buying is apparently over…) means that ZHC driver “services are no longer required”. I’ve asked to be placed by the agency at another supermarket, but their work is going quiet too, and I’m being told that I might only be getting 1 or 2 shifts per week for the duration…
Oh Crap!
That’s worse than being sacked in a way, as I literally now do not know when my next shift is… I’ll get paid for last week’s work this week, and I’ll probably get my holiday pot paid for next week - and THEN what?
Meanwhile, I’m still employed at the same agency, unless I resign, and if I resign, I presumably won’t qualify for stuff like Universal Credit for 13 weeks, or something daft…
Made some phone calls around other yards, and they are already standing down their drivers, so there’s no agency nor full time work there for the duration as well…
There’s two options then: Get placed at another client yard or resign, and try and make one week’s wages last the next 13 week gap between getting any UC…
I’m hoping my flexibility and low cost lifestyle - will help me out, as I can manage on part time hours, - just not NO hours!
I’m also being told that there is a dearth of 18:00-22:00 start times, presumably because they don’t want people getting paid the higher rate as of now…?
Lots of shifts for 02:00-04:00 starts though, if anyone else is suited to those @ supermarkets…
Got an assessment @ Dartford meanwhile, - but it is a fortnight away.
Anyone else considering going on UC because they just won’t be getting anywhere near enough hours in the near future, let alone “decent hourly rate” hours…?

does anyone know what furlough is?
as in is it actually a word that’s been around for years just never used?
or is it made up like Brexit was?
as until all this cant say heard the word before
Think it’s more of an American thing that weve borrowed.
I first saw the word ‘furlough’ a few years ago when I was researching my family history. There was a newspaper report of my great grandfather’s funeral in 1915, and one of his sons (my great uncle) was serving with the Royal Horse Artillery. The newspaper report stated that he had been granted furlough to attend the funeral. So I would suggest it’s a word with military origins.

Ive just received this week payslip by email and found an unexpected surprise on it, I dunno if it’s the furloughed pay but £1+/- it equates to 80% of this last weeks earnings that due in the bank on Friday, ie last weeks earnings + ?
Your employers cannot furlough you without discussion. Were you working last week? in which case it isn’t furlough, you’ve just been underpaid by the sound of it.

Oh no… and just as our time was coming…
Do you have any other skills that you could fall back on, instead of driving?

Dutch I thought.
From the Dutch ‘ferlov’, it’s been used in the US for many years but first time it’s been used in the UK.

All of our class 2 drivers have been stood down, 100% basic paid, 80% to be claimed from the government, the other 20% paid by the firm, isn’t that what all those intending to claim the 80% are supposed to be doing too?
I’m class 1 so have to keep going regardless, would love a day or two off here or there …
One of the drivers asked whether he’d get average overtime too, told no. Offered the possibility of the occasional Saturday o/time (time and a half) and said no chance! Whilst some of us have to turn up at 6am every day with overtime stopped to get the same as him for doing absolutely nothing!!!
If your that bothered that your still having to work just do what all the other work shy ones do and say they are going into isolation because they sneezed and they werent even near pepper.
Id be happy i was still in a job if i were you 80% pay in house or not.

I was applying for UC at the start of the week as I was having to drop shifts unpaid for childcare and was losing 50% of my wage and my company wasn’t willing to furlough me. You might be surprised at how much you’ll get and it takes 4 or 5 weeks to process so it’s worth a shot. But now my company has decided to furlough me so I’ve cancelled my claim.
Go onto Martin Lewis Money saving expert website and use his benefits calculator. I’ve used his website for years for all different things cos I’m not the best with money.

That’s a bit rough if they’ve done the 20% reduction on wages you’ve actually worked for already.?
I figured the 80% would be for “stood down” or “Retainer” pay? I.e. You’re on Gardening Leave by the time you start to get it…

Just to clarify: I was at work last week, all shifts for this week where prebooked by Tuesday last week (which is normal), however 2pm on Friday afternoon the client decided to cancel ALL agency shifts at all depots until further notice (min 3 weeks), I received a phone call from the agency informing me of this decision. By 4pm Friday I finished the shift and on the way home. I called the agency to enquire if I was entitled to furlough (I posted previously about this), at this point there was a lot of activity behind the scenes as the branch manager was consulting with their bosses about furlough, shortly after the branch manager called me back to update me, and I was told that they had been told to compile a list of those PAYE drivers on Swedish derogation contracts by 10am Monday to send to the payroll dept, and my name would be on that list. So yes there had been some discussion about furlough between myself and the branch manager, and yes we agreed that I should be put on furlough
As for under pay: no I haven’t (on Friday) I will be paid for all the hours I worked up to last Friday (hours checked & gross £ confirmed), and there’s an additional amount added to the gross income. I’m still to confirm what this money is for, but a quick check of the calculator indicates it’s almost equal to 80% of the amount I earned from the hours that I did last week. So there’s 180% of the money I was expecting going into the bank
Edit: I’ve just received an email entitled “Change of your status to Furloughed”
It details the specifics of furloughing and how the money is calculated, and it confirms that the additional income on my payslip is “furlough money”.

Will you continue getting 80% as of the first full week without any work?
…I’m on a PAYE swedish derogation contract as far as I know, and did my last shift last sunday, and had my pre-planned shifts from monday onwards - taken away again. I’ve not worked since, and don’t know at present when my next shift is going to be, but it could be right after an assessment I’ve got at Dartford in 2 weeks time - IF they don’t cancel that because of the continuing lock-down…
I got paid my full normal pay (100%) for last week’s work this week - not the 180% you speak of. It’s next week onwards - that I’m worried about now. I’ve only got 4 days holiday to come…
Is it possible, I wonder - if NO firm is willing to wear the new parity pay rates where PAYE bods get uplifted to the same pay as Ltd Contract drivers? I was really looking forward to moving up from £14ph to the £16.67ph mentioned less than a month ago “from April 1st”… Not gonna happen now though. Our first “non-Jam-Tomorrow” deal for yonks - and it gets side-stepped like this…
