Anybody know how the cab airbags work on magnum?

Hi Peeps,

Been to look at an old J plate magnum today, had a drive with & without a trailer & overall very impressed. Couple of little jobs to do as follows:

  1. Exhaust blow - minor detail (eminox pipe flange)

  2. The cab sits well tilted. is this JUST one airbag (o/s/r) gone - or is the sytem more complicated.

Any replies appreciated quick if poss. got to give the guy an answer soon.

Pic of it here

Thanks all

John

Hello John,

Might be an airbag, might be a fault with the cab-levelling system but neither of these are very big jobs, to the best of my knowledge.

I think you just want someone to say “That looks nice, go and buy it”

That looks nice, go and buy it.

Had an airbag go on a premuim once, they start by bulging like a bad tyre and then pop. But it only took about 15 minutes to change. I think what they did was let the air out of the cab suspension system using the leveling lever. which means the dampers take the wieght and the bag can be poped out and new one poped in and connected.
But I’m a driver not a fitter so if it goes wrong its not my fault.

Looks the part John, If you dont mind me asking? how much?

Bully

Vince: You are becoming predictable

Guy wants £2500 (forget the VAT)

Tried all means to get him to “talk” but it’s £2500, & the editors decision is final

I know a 95 M reg would be better @ £3500 but it’s out of our budget :frowning:

For all your sarcasm Vince, you pay the forfeit of seeing another 3 pics

Honestly though - I value all your opinions & would hate to bring one home, pop a pic up & you all tell me it’s a heap (easy to let the heart rule the head).

Inside looks good to me …

is it worth the dosh ■■?

Tested August - Newish front SS tyres, 4 rears are 25% (ok for me)

2500 quid…well put it this way…I think if I was still over in the UK I would consider buying it if you didnt… BULLYS TRUCKIN’ LTD

Bully

PS…If you do buy it John then watch them steps…it’s a long way down

is it worth the dosh ■■?

course it is - it’s your toy  you can justify anything if you want to ! :smiling_imp:

can you get a mechanic to look at it ?

does it still lean when it’s not parked with one wheel on the pavement ?

If the engine sounds ok, you can find all of the gears, and it goes down the road in a straight line, then I would say that for £2,500, it`s a steal.

For what you want, you simply will not do any better. £2,500 is “scrap money”.

This is simply a truck which has reached the end of the road as a business tool

In the hands of someone with the time and willingness to give it some TLC, my guess is that it is good for another 10 years and half-a-million clicks.

You were completely wrong about the sarcasm bit, btw.

Vince

Thanks Lads

Denis: Yes i got a guy that works on my coach when needed, good rate the right way

Bully: How about I letter it up TOYTOWN TRUCKIN’ UNLIMITED

Vince: Only joking (obviously) - but yes I can stand the wind ups, sarcasm & whatever else you want to throw at me, just keep your tin hat on

Emailed the guy & if he agrees to bring it half way for me, it’s mine. if he won’t bring it half of the 15o miles to meet me, well - it’s gone. (working on the idea that if he trusts it, he will bring it & besides it’s too far for donna to drive back with her dodgy wrists).

Thank ALL of you for all the help you have given me (you lot are soooo patient !!).

Anybody want trucknet stickers FREE for their cars, just ask (any size up to 22" wide / any colour)

Regards

John

Two pieces of advice.

  1. Don`t lose the chance to buy it because of a haggling squabble over driving another few miles. This truck is not overpriced. Bully asked you how much it was. Before you answered, my guess was £3000-£3500.

  2. Dont confuse my positive nature with sarcasm. You will find plenty of people ready to pooh-pooh your whole idea. Im just not one of them.

If you buy this Magnum, you will not regret it. If you do not buy this Magnum, you will rue the missed opportunity for the rest of your life.

Oh, stop messing about - buy it! :grimacing:

What do you mean I 've worked for companies where it would be the pride of the fleet.

Many a true word said in jest

Pat will remember 10 year old F10’s with the back of the cab falling out because of rust   But … after a scania 80 it was heaven

See your point Vince, I am squabbling over a few miles, but it’s to prove HE trusts it too (I know a dealer wouldn’t but he’s not a dealer)

Thanks

Few & far between in this sad world we live in  So many people just look for ways to have a pop at somebody else … who does that make SAD … not you & me Guv, we enjoy ourselves

Where I work, our H-reg F16 is still the pride of the fleet.

Despite having nearly new Scania Topliners as our everyday vehicles.

This motor just cries out to be bought by an enthusiast. As we have all already agreed.

Vince

Before Rushing out to buy it, I would check out the price of the cab airbag first, If it’s a common replacement item such as every 3 year service etc, it should be relatively cheap, however, it’s an item that ussually lasts a number of years say 7 or more, your looking at around £200 or more   best bet is to call a Renault Dealer 1st thing Monday or you may be lucky to find one open tomorrow as many services etc are done night shift and weekends etc.

Better Safe than Sorry, as for price  I reckon it’s a good price subject to the cost of replacing the bag, but ask yourself Why is he selling it unrepaired? surely he would get a better price if it was repaired?

Having worked on Magnums i can advise you as follows.

Cab air-bag is around 1 hrs work to change and from memory about
£ 120.00. Easy to change, check levelling valve first next to air bag as the joints on these are prone to breaking.

Some other common faults on Magnums to check for:

Holes in exhaust box

Snapped cylinder head bolts

Check windscreen doesn’t leak most that have new screens fitted leak afterwards

Seats adjust properly most magnum seats half the controls don’t work

Batteries ( not uncommon for a set to last no more than a year !! ) allways turn battery isolator off when the truck will be left standing.

Humming noise from engine ( fans on these are prone to faliure )

Check it restarts ok once warmed up as starter motors stick very easily

Ball joints on steering

I hope this helps it looks a sound truck, Good Luck

A real motor at last, I love the Magnum, wouldn’t want anything else, loved the pics and Toyt, it looks like other than the airbag, in VERY good shape for being a “J” plate. Mine was the newer interior but I still love 'em. After being in the cab, looking around, can’t you just see, with the bunks removed seats could be fitted and the flat floor being perfect for that. Not to mention thekids loving to ride in trucks, ESPECIALLY a Magnum, being so high up…!!!

For (GBP)2500, thats a steal and even if it took a grand spending on it, I would snap that up no worries, looks like the Welsh guy that had it took care of the outside and the inside isnt too bad for the age. BUY IT, save the hassle, you will not be dissapointed with a Magnum.

Send me more pics of it…!! LOL I need my Renault fix…!!

Hey Munchman,

Freightshaker !!! Now that WOULD be something special over here

Funny about mags being “special”, on monday i travelled just a few miles of the A14 & saw 8 YES EIGHT magnums all within within 20 mins !!
Couple of older N&P plated ones but the rest were new models (with the lights they stole off the new FH

Emails been going back & forth all night, he has agreed to drive it about a third of the way (was hoping for half), & he mentioned that it WILL be no problem on my way home for many more miles afterwards (was on italy until recently with it’s previous owner — bit old for that methinks■■?).

Anyway, unless anything unforseen pops up, between now & monday, I will hopefully have it here Monday evening :open_mouth:

Will post pics for you munch, if that makes you hapy, it’s the least i can do for all the help & advice that’s been posted here.

BTW - the interior is probably bette rthan the pics show, can’t beleive it might have done a million clicks unless it’s had new seats :open_mouth: (didn’t look at recorded mileage but that means nothing does it  )

Here’s what else i found on my 5 or 6 mile drive:

Tacho, speedo & rev counter all work ok.

Oil pressure is about 70% of the gauge on power, 40% tickover 9hot)

Temp just under half way

Slapover range & splitter seem faultless

clutch only goes down half way before it get really stiff, but does disengage before it hits this bit just seems like little travel)

Steers as straight as a die. Steering easy but not too, light - felt good.

Cab rolls a lot on roundabouts but methinks this is the airbag problem ■■

Limiter is a good’un @ 60

Tax in the window shows 6/03 so unlikely it’s been offroad for too long.

there was a red & orange light on dash (brake i think), I guess this is wear indicators for brake pads on front - seemed to brake very well

didn’t check any aux toys except windows, no doubt i will find a bucketful of bits that need TLC
