I currently work for the green army as a tramper, we all take a fair amount with us and it takes a bit o time to put our kit in. But the question is, have any of you been asked when at another depot to give your motor to a driver from there so they can use it overnight and put you into a hotel? Do you think it’s a reasonable request and would you say no!
It’s their motor …
Stay in a hotel rather than kip in the bunk? Yeah I’d do it but make sure you take all your valuables
Yeah it’s their truck but jesus thats rubbish to say the least. Where do you put all your stuff? If they want trampers then they have to accept that the drivers sleep in the truck.
Let me think, small box or Travelodge/premier inn with showers, tv, large double bed, bar, erm yeah. Long as you`ve got your wallet, phone, house/car keys cannot see the problem.

you’d leave your ■■■■ collection behind
It takes me a while to kit and de kit my truck on mon and fri, i could of put my kit into storage but at end of duty that was last thing on my mind and especially in middle of week at another depot, I know it’s there truck but its my home for week and I’m unhappy about letting someone I dont know in tbh.
I think it’s balls myself. Yes it’s there truck but its your work space and home for the week. I once spent a night on a Dublin hotel as my company sent my truck to the continent at short notice. Which left me walking into a hotel with a plastic box I could hardly carry full of maps, kettle, gas ring and all the other stuff I had plus a duvet and 2 pillows under my arm. Ridiculous sight in a hotel lobby and something I was very unhappy about. Didn’t stay with said company after this.
I wouldn’t be happy.
if Im willing to stay out all week, then I
m kitting my truck up for the job.
It wouldn’t be chilled side …?
No I wasn’t happy tbh and I did refused but I was in dock with manager and now it could go to dissaplinary and I’m not expecting to win, but my notice is ready!!!
No not chilled…
No I wouldn’t of been happy to be honest,it got on my nerves taking my kit out of my unit to transfer it into rigid for day ,and that’s day shift kit so if I had to take that plus all tramping gear I’d be ■■■■■■ off to be honest.
I would have, but only if I hadn’t began daily rest.
If interrupting your break then no thanks.
Yeah its not always convenient but sometimes you gotta had some give and take
Its their truck they can do as they wish but it is out of order i think to ask a tramper to do this and I would have refused saying that I have already started my break and if have to get a hotel bag up together I would have to start my break again. I’m lucky where I am I’m the only one that drives my truck and when off for a week its parked up in the yard

No brainer to me. I’d like to know how you’d get from the cab to the hotel room with all your gear & do you still get night out money…!?
as said, their truck, their rules
there is a simple solution to the problem, and to make sure it doesn’t arise again…
don’t park in the other depots
I was speaking to a penrith driver in stirling the other week. He had the same happen to him at rugby. His truck came back with a blown airbag next day
I suppose you could have asked the manager, if it would be ok to leave your gear at his house for the night, or at least put most of it in the boot of his car, after all, thats probably company issue as well.
I’d refuse, as a tramper you are giving them the flexibilty to run you with that truck to where ever the next load takes you, the upside for the company, downside the motor aint double shifted. A day or night driver gives the oppertunity to double shift the motor, downside they have to get it back to depot at the end of each shift. They have to decide how theyre going to run and stick to it.
Our place knows that some drivers sleep in the trucks in the home depot if we’ve run out of hours, and live to far away to make it viable to go home, and wont plan night driver onto those trucks ever, they only plan night drivers on trucks where they know the driver goes home (live localy).
