Well if anyone knows of any tramping jobs in Staffordshire area let me know! As that’s the last straw for me!!
.
How can they make a tramping vehicle pay ?
It’s dead while the Driver is kipping.
Double manning would be cheaper.
.
It doesn’t matter who the truck belongs to. Staying out all week, or longer is going beyond the regular norms and requirements of most jobs and what most people do and as such its a two way street. They want drivers to go away, which in itself is more a way of life than simply a job, then they have to also act responsibly towards that driver and not treat them as a day man who has nothing more than his satnav and lunch box in the cab to remove at the end of the shift. A truck stops being merely a work place when you stay out in it and becomes a living space and your bedroom essentially and if companies want drivers to perform anti-social activities such as being away all week, they should, in my opinion act in a responsible manner towards that driver to allow him to do it properly.
I agree.
well put
Not exactly the same, but Marmite did similar to me once.
I was back at the ‘home depot’ but this home depot was 45 miles each way from my house, I’d started at Manchester depot, but got offered ‘my own truck’ at the Leeds depot which I took, one night they told me they needed to put a night man on my truck to get the mileage up, which not only meant I had to go home and back at the night (and a few nights following) but they also expected me to do this in a 9hr rest period the 1st night, which never happened, and a 12hr rest period the next 2 nights.
I agree 100% it’s ■■■■■■■ crap, hated the thought of someone else deciding to have 45 mins on my bedding or eating my biscuits etc, let alone if they had a cold or something and left a load of germs for me when I got back in it.
I was not forewarned of this for any of the nights btw.
Unfortunately nowadays a driver is seen in the same light as a truck, just a tool to get the job done.

You have to admit though, some are
If a smaller firm asked, it’d be ok as you’re all in it together maybe but not as if Stobarts haven’t got motors coming out of there arris anyway.

It might be dead while the truck is being slept in, but it would always be on route with a paying load. I wonder how many loads get dragged back to a depot in opposite direction or at least well of route to where their headed just to get a truck back to end shift, which when alll said and done is dead mileage which has to be accounted for.
Spot on^^^^ When I was on maritime I was loading in barking for southampton. They trunked it on nights to “save money” even though I pointed out it was actually costing £30 more in wages alone, let alone precious diesel and lifting charges, than if I did it myself

Yes… Any company would pay £30 to free up a truck for another shift. Then the truck and driver is available to make the company even more money with an extra load.
Its an interesting argument, I am sat in a trampers vehicle at the moment, I can’t jump on the bunk because it has all his bedding on and can’t move round the cab because of all the crap everywhere. The trucks are the companies property and should be vacated when required (unless on a rest period).
you should have phoned your home depot and asked them what they felt you should of done and if they agreed with them then it should of been bye bye , its all very sad that this is how its all turning out in the haulage industry and then they expect us to be professional lol they need to look at there own professionalism, this all stinks of a idiot over booking loads but as we all know we are at the mercy of the idiot planners using the drivers to get there ■■■■ ups sorted out but all that said we let them do it so we have no one to blame but ourselves.
I think the definition of a tramper is changing! Unless you actually live permanently in it like some European/Irish guys.

It wasn’t to do an extra load. It was to take my load to southampton then return a loaded container for the next day, for me to tip. It was £100 for the night man, my overtime and night out came to £64. There was £20 of diesel from me passing the M25 to the driver joining at same spot. £15 to lift off my trailer, same to lift onto his. Same again with the next days job and they would have been £16 better off giving the night man a paid day off and me doing max hours
Got you, thought you got an extra run out of it.
Talking of the unit im in… There is no biscuits… Lol

Sometimes it’s a security issue although now always.

Yeah thats true. and it is also true that the truck will make more revenue, but not allways more profit.
