Evening folks,
I’m just wondering if there are any ex car/truck dealers on here whom could offer me some advice. And no I’m not planning on becoming the next Eddie Stobart or Norbet Dentressangle
Cheers

newmercman, you’ll find him in the ex-pat area…
what do you want out of intrest?
Got an interview on Saturday at Harratts (Nissan in Pontefract, formally Renault!) as a sales person…I’ve been at the dealership twice both for test drives (First being a Renault Clio, Second being a Nissan Note…Second test drive absolutely spot on!!) And well both salesman I gave a bit of show of how much I knew about each car, and what I liked and didn’t like etc.
I got a call this afternoon asking for me to come in for an interview Saturday, I thought they were calling up to book another test drive for a different car but when they said about me going in for an interview was quite excited! But now it’s sunk in I haven’t a bloody clue what to expect
Have messaged NMM just waiting a reply but advice from anyone would be helpful. Maybe they were impressed on my knowledge on the cars in the dealership Who knows
Cheers
Jonny
unfortunally, that’s well out of my remit, as i normally fix the bloody thing’s, so can’t offer much in the way of that, but good luck with it all, if your test drive’s are anything to go by you shouldn’t have an issue.
i just wish i could find some full time employment around here, over a over 200 job and c.v. handed out and applyed for, and a handful of call back’s, really getting fed up with it now.
but good luck to you and i hope it goes well for you
Cheers mate,
I put my CV in on the off chance I’d get something, as I was going to be cheeky and ask ‘If you give me a job, I’ll buy the car’ but didn’t think that would go down well But I think my love for all things driving may have caught on to give me a chance.
I’m currently doing agency work in Thorne for the range/dhl but I’m not sure how long I can put up with our new team leader as shes only been in the role 2 weeks and has already had 3 people sacked Nothing more than a glorified agency worker with a pretty orange jacket
So a new job would be lovely as it would save me getting sacked for losing my rag with said person
Hope you find something soon on the job front!
Cheers
Jonny
Back in 2006 I had one of those got to get off road moments! So I applied for a sales exec job at a Peugeot dealer, went for interview and within an hour they called me back for 2nd interview and offered me the job!
All I can say is be yourself, don’t come across too clever or arrogant and when asked a question in the interview give a straight quick answer!
When I started the job I had 4days intensive training into how to sell cars, a sales process is what it’s called and if you stick to that process you will become a successful salesman, the only thing is the person who designed the process lives in the perfect world where they think that everyone who walks on to forecourt are buyers, unfortunately that’s not true, but stick to the basics of the process and you’ll soon work out how to tell a buyer from a tyre kicker!
Why am I driving trucks I hear unall ask, we’ll I sadly got made redundant in 2008 in the recession and couldn’t find another sales job for love nor money! So came back to what I know!
Only downside to car sales is weekend work! You’ll do most of your business on a weekend so its compulsory! However u will get time off in the week to make up for it!
Hope this is helpful, anything else please ask!
Product knowledge is important but being able to sell is more important, also it not as easy as it looks its one of nthe hardest jobs around…
All i can say is be ruthless, you need to sell to earn and survive…
I started washing cars at 12 at a local second hand dealer and sold my first when I was 15, from then on every weekend and school holiday I was in a shirt and tie pretending I was old enough to drive the cars I was selling I sold cars till I was almost 19 when I left to start driving lorrys, there’s loads off tips I always put customers in 3 categories 1) the people who had no clue at what they wanted and didn’t care, they knew nothing about cars and could be talked into everything always easy sells 2) the people that acted like they knew it all and told YOU what they wanted what they would and wouldn’t pay and what you will be doing for them, I would just let them feel like they where in control these people like the power then at the last minute is sit them down back them into a corner and watch them crumble as they hand over there deposite on MY terms and 3) people who know more than I did knew what they wanted and just needed me to fetch the keys I would just leave them to it and hope for the best. If you have a couple always direct your patter to the women concentrate on her eye contact and let her feel she’s in charge 9/10 if the lady wants the car wether the husband wants it or not they get it if the husband wants the car but she doesn’t they’ll “go away to think about it” so always sell to the women, if they have kids get them straight in the car let them jump all over the seats if they must then tell the kids they love the car don’t they this will result I’n them shouting they want it to there parents till they buy it to shut them up always keep a couple off Lollys in your pocket I used to buy a tub and give them to the kids they were on your side straight away then
and always look after the customers the salesman I worked with would pretend he wasn’t there when things went wrong would bully them into extended warrantys etc I was the opposite I would bend over back wards for people because the following week there friends would turn up asking for me and i sold more a month than some one 20 years older then me, and remember bums in seats sell cars!
My brother ran 3 garages and I worked for him for a while, his best two sales advisers started working in the valeting bay, on a Saturday they would put on a suit and shadow a salesman or offer test drives, within a couple of weeks they were both selling cars on a regular basis. They still are and still work in the same dealership that they started in over 20 years ago.
It all depends on the package they offer you, a commision only basis is not good until you have a proven sales record and a big book of customers to fall back on. Try to get a salary and a finance commision instead.
I enjoyed it and the first car I sold was over 30k
well the trucknet mass’s have responded in rather fine form, several with bloody good tip’s, i wish i choosen a “clean” job over the spanner’s…

ah agency work, i’ve been on the humber sea terminal on the unloading of new car’s and in the shed carrying out PDI’s on van’s, it’s very different to what i normally do, but it’s agency work so not reliable at the moment.
having said that a ankle in a cast isn’t helping the situation , but the team leader in the shed as been asking for me for the past 2wk’s or so, so i am lucky in some way’s, just wanna get back to work now
When you’ve got a potential punter on the hook you’ll usually get a short period of time to button them up… Once you’ve told them what they need to know about the vehicle/test drive etc. there’s no better question than “would you like to go ahead??”. Put the ball in their court for a moment… They either do or don’t want to buy it… In the main dealer world they often go for the hard sell and potential customers can be wary of this… Remember that you don’t necessarily have to talk solely about cars in order to get their confidence up… Going off on another tangent for a moment can help to make them feel more at ease… In fact, some of the best salesman I’ve known haven’t been real experts with regards to vehicles but knew how to read a person well. I’ve always found it easier to sell HGV’s and plant machinery as opposed to cars for the simple reason that most customers just want it to do a job and as long is it’s clean and tidy with the right spec aren’t as fussy as your average car punter… Just remember that you won’t be able to serve everyone that comes onsite and don’t get too downbeat if you miss a deal as you’ve gotta be ready for the next man/woman…
Thank you all for the advice! All great and sound advice something I shall be taking on board, the idea about the Lollys to give to the kids is a good idea, as usually parents listen to their kids when it comes to buying stuff! My idea of selling cars would be to get a list of everything the potential punter is looking for for what they need/want and what they would like to have but don’t mind if it’s not on the car etc. To make sure you know about the car your selling but if the customer happens to know ‘more’ let them go and think they know that little bit more, explaining the good points to the car saying what particular car they’re looking at comes with, and if they have seen a particular car on the website that they want to test drive to make sure it is that exact car they get to test drive providing it’s available (One of the cars I test drove was similar to what I saw on their website but didn’t have the black & Chrome alloys which I was after!) as I know customers can be picky. If you have had experience with said car explain your experience with it of how you’ve had nothing go wrong other than general wear and tear on the tyres etc. And if the woman or parents are present be sure to let them know about how safe the said car is as they want the safest car for their money if they happen to have a bump. Also if they’re part exing a car to ensure you ask if they’ve had it valued, and give them said figure on the understanding it’s their pride and joy and that it will take so much money off their new motor making the deal so much sweeter for them.
Getting quite excited with it! Unfortunately having to have the day off due to my back causing problems. Apparently picking waredrobes and mirrors and such things on your own at speed can cause damage Wish someone would tell the team leader that
Hopefully I’ll get the job and the only thing I have to worry about is whether the customer is driving out happy with a new car or walking out with a bad mood
All will be more clear tomorrow
Cheers
Jonny
How long will this one last for?

Basic salary is £18,000 at this place. I’m there to earn a wage not get the company car. If they want to take it off me for a customer so be it. Will see how it goes though, after all no use running before I’ve learnt to walk
Cheers

well as was said earlier they will train you in a sales process designed to lead the customer to buying the car your sales manager will want to no every thing about negotiations especally if you loose the sale .As for the interview dress smart be alert and show them a keeness to learn they wount expect you to no about the sales process as they will proberly want to train you in there ways .The job it self is what you make it when the showrooms quiet have a wander round the repair shop get your manager to price cars in for repair try structering a deal on something newer then phone the customer and see if you can get them to pop in a see you when they pick there car up when its quiet you have to try make things happen for youe self good luck with it mate
if they ask you at the end if you have any questions try when do i start great its all about the close !
I was a car sales and leasing agent for the main Ford dealer in Glens Falls / Queensbury NY. I was told ‘Dont worry, there is no pushing sales used here’ … like hell there wasn’t, I was on the carpet each and every time a customer walked out without a deal, even when they came back next day and bought a car I still got a severe telling off.
Be carefull they are not just trying to humour you and sell you a car by using alternative tactics … ie ; pretending to be interested in employing you, that was a regular trick with the Ford dealer also, it’s a way to get you back if you did the test drive but didn’t buy.
I was told ‘Never lie to a customer, but tell them anything to make the sale’
Second trick, the phone call … customer calls in “DO you have a pink Ford Mustang in stock ?”
“I think we might, but I will go and check and call you back” then you have their name and number, you sit and twiddle your thumbs for 15 minutes then call them back “Yes, we have got one but someone is looking at it so hurry in” the customer rushes in only to be told the car was sold for cash 10 minutes ago, you then have the poor person trapped on site to force a sale of something they don’t want and can’t afford.
