Another silly tacho question

Again today the tacho light came on the dashboard for a break (why does it always do it on the motorway where you cant stop for 15 miles) However this time I looked at my driving time and it said I had done 4:27. So question is how long do you have left once the light comes on?

It does it on the Motorway when you can’t stop for a break simply because you haven’t been keeping an eye on it yourself and planning your breaks accordingly…

If i remember correctly, the light comes on at 15 mins left.
I’ve not driven digital tacho for ages though, still analogue on our old trucks.

As has already been said, the light comes on once you have 15 minutes remaining. To avoid running out of time, start looking for places to stop once you’ve done about 3 and a half hours. A 5 hour drive with a 45 minute break will always take 5 hours and 45 minutes no matter when during that time you take your break, no benefit from maxing your time

Darkspirit:
Should give you a 15 min warning and then it goes off again when you’ve run out of time,4.27 seems a little odd.

that’s what the driving time was when I stopped sorry

thanks for the replies I have made a mental note to check the time left after doing my last London drop.

out of interest can you stop in a residents permit only bay on the side of a road. or do you run the risk of being moved on by a traffic warden.

Are you a resident with a permit?

coop…

If you need to answer basic q’s like this every other day, you need to re-evaluate your career in lorry driving.

We were all new once, and none of us (including you) know everything.
I still ask questions that probably seem daft to some people, but the only way to find the answer is to ask. That’s the main benefit of a forum like this, there will always be someone who has been there and done it before.
Why not use your experience and knowledge to help newbies instead of trying to mock?

Never tried it so can’t comment…

But some loud mouth know it all guy who works at our places reckons you can

He reckons if your due a break or a night out you can park on housing estates double yellows and.police can’t do anything about it.
As according to him your following the law taking your legally required break.
And nothing the police or authorities can do about .

You shouldn’t need reminding that you need a break you should be planning it in and keeping an eye on time. The fact it does give you a 15 minute warning is just a bit of a bonus.

Grill up + hazard lights on, and get your self a blow-up doll & some Hi-Viz strides, stick the strides on the doll and stick “her” under the front bumper, make the “breakdown” look kosher :open_mouth:

Best bit of advice I`ve had for multi drop down the “smoke”

I agree with start planning earlier, but with the sheer number of wagons on the road and lack of decent laybys on many routes, it can still be touch and go sometimes getting parked up for us mere mortals, with the best of intentions things still go wrong sometimes.

You can’t rely on there being a space on an MSA either, how many times have we had to drive out again even those of us who can reverse fairly well cos the place is rammed, i don’t park on the out slip roads but see that is becoming quite a regular thing now, and then you have motors parking along the back of herringbone rows, eg Leics Forest southbound and Wooley Edge southbound, meaning a blind side for anyone parking in the lanes they blocked but are now vacated, yes that semi blind side might be childs play to many here but many others wouldn’t feel up to it, especially with the number of drivers sitting in their cabs watching them struggle.

Yup Stanley Mitchell, i’ve done the grill up hazards on routine before :smiling_imp: , sans the blow up doll mind.

The rest being tongue in cheek but it is something you can do in London especially as parking near a drop in the centre is hard work. You put the grill up as parking people always take a picture of the offending vehicle when they write the ticket, can’t ticket a ‘broken down’ lorry.

3 hours driving
45 minute break
3 hours driving
45 minute break
3 hours driving

Terry T:
3 hours driving
45 minute break
3 hours driving
45 minute break
3 hours driving

Yeah that’s about how I try to work it.

Or like today where its 2hrs driving, 3hrs break, 30min driving, 1hr break, 1hr driving then finito

I seldom do motorways… but the thing I hate almost more than anything is pulling into an MSA and being unable to park because of total idiots driving cars with wobble boxes on the back. The sign says ‘Lorries’ you @£$%^&^%

It cuts both ways though - Go into e.g. Toddington Services Northbound any day of the week and check out the half dozen dedicated “caravans only” slots and the dozen or so “coaches only” spaces. Pound to a pinch of snuff at least half of them will be occupied by lorries. Same applies pretty well anywhere that has dedicated coach and/or caravan spaces.
