Another sat nav muppet

Keep blindly following yer sat navs and this is what happens.
Stuck for 9 HOURS. :unamused: examinerlive.co.uk/news/wes … e-23525003

I seem to recall a place I used to go down (pre sat nav days) around Slaithwaite…was it ‘Scapegoat Hill’ ?
Is that the same place?

Scapegoat Hill is the village above Slaithwaite (Slawit)

You can just make out the hotel up there above the golf course at the side of the M62 at J23.

The A62 runs through the centre of Slawit.

How or why the ■■■■ did he end up there? Moran by name moron by nature :exclamation: :grimacing:

the trouble with sat nav’s is they will follow set peramiters to chose a route. 99% of the time this is fine however if for some reason the route isnt accsessable or the driver missed a turn it then tries to navigate you back onto the origonal path. Thats where the programing falls down and will take you the quickets way back to the origonal route.

This is where you need to zoom out and look for the main roads where you are and head forthem to force the satnav to plot an entirly new route.

in a city it doesnt matter much but try it in the country and your asking for trouble as you couldeasily add on another 40 miles.

Must be Google maps or a car sat nav

Interesting. Everyone hating lorries in their neighbourhood unless of course it’s the bin lorry or their new kitchen top and table set or whatever gardening crap that has to come on a full sized pallet

and the road being called a road rather than a lane

Feel sorry for the driver, it is an all to easy situation to find one self in. WAs in a similar situation in the Lake District not so long ago, road closed caught me by surprise, sat nav telling me to go through the closed road, ended up on tiny little roads barely scraping through, sat nav brought me back to the same place.

It amazes me sat navs have not got find alternative button, my iGo had one many years ago

There are umpteen signs around those parts that he’s most likely passed advising no HGV access. If he has come off the M62, it’s signed posted that HGV for Golcar and Slawit must go via the town centre and A62.

Just seeing the road ahead of him should have set alarm bells ringing!

He should never have got into that situation!

TomToms have had (and as far as I know still have) such a facility for decades. Not that it’s entirely relevant here, as blindly accepting/following a satnav is the issue, rather than actually looking at the proposed route and proceeding accordingly.

Totally agree, the alarm bells should have been ringing long before he got to this point. My criteria when I delivered to farms, with a wagon and drag, was never drive round a corner that I wouldn’t be happy reversing back round.

When approaching on the A640 he would have seen multiple signs saying “All roads ahead unsuitable for large vehicles” and/or “unsuitable for HGV”. But you can’t educate pork.

You can’t blame either., it’s down to the driver.
I use both Google maps and a car sat nav (and a map for making sure)
I also always ring the farmer for the best route in, and to ask if there is room to turn back round when tipped,.so basically every Avenue covered (as far as it can be) but at end of day if it goes ■■■■ up, it us going to be totally down to ME to face the music, not the method of navigation I use.

The guy doing the complaining has a class 1 licence. It’s not the first time it’s happened, and reading the article it states he has assisted drivers in the past. If he’s trying to run a business and this is causing him or his customers inconvenience, he’s right to moan.

Correct.

Plus, if he was lost, why not have a look on Google maps? If you saw that hair pin close by, again you’d never even attempt it. Horse and cart territory around there!

The morning this happened the A62 was closed at Cowersley due to a accident,I think he must have been delivering the Milk and butter to Aldi at Slaithwaite and was probably trying to get to Aldi at Milnsbridge, every route out of Slaithwaite(apart from A62) is unsuitable for hgvs really,I live up there and it happens often, not sticking up for the driver but it’s horrendous a lately, roads closed for roadworks and diversion signs that don’t really get you anywhere…

Ah, makes sense I suppose re the A62 being closed, but that was from the ealry hours wasn’t it?

How did he get up there in the first place?! Presuming he will have come out of Moran’s at Leeds?

Was shut until about dinnertime as someone got knocked over and killed, you can get down to Milnsbridge in an artic without touching A62 but can’t get over to Slaithwaite,if you come across the A640 it’s pretty much the same, you’ve to cross Scapegoat hill or Bolster Moor,I’ve seen the buses stuck before because councils got road up and not taken into account anything bigger then a car using the road.

Yeah. Used to have family in Golcar. Delivered to Bolster Moor farm shop, but that’s always been with urban Trl on. Tip too at bacon spot on one way system in Milnsbridge.

This is my back yard.

It does happen frequently.

I was out walking once and managed to prevent a very confused Polish lad with little English not to driver through Old Lindley and Jagger Green in an attempt to get to Brookwoods Industrial Estate. He was well on his way down the lane in his fully loaded artic…

Googling the road in question will have you spitting out your coffee. No artic is ever going down there. He had to reverse a fair way, but at least he listened. He even thanked me, rather than abuse as I have had.in the past.

A lot of the roads around Scapegoat Hill are not suitable for any large vehicles really.
