Carryfast:
So exactly what did you mean by saying that ‘if’ trucks/buses didn’t overtake cyclists, the signs in question, (which are obviously there to,try to,deter cyclists from undertaking,or even possibly filtering alongside, potentially left turning trucks ),would be redundant.
I’ve seen many a LGV pull alongside cyclists then turn left in front of them.
I have also seen cyclists ride down kerb side of LGVs whilst they have indicator lights on.
Just because a LGV has a cyclist beware sticker doesn’t mean that the driver is cyclist aware does it?
I can wear a NASA spacesuit it don’t make me a astronaut!
Carryfast, trucks (and cars) do overtake cyclists then turn left. I’ve had it happen to me … the incidents that stick in my mind are a Barry Proctor artic loaded with bricks on the Wolverhampton - Walsall road early one morning and a Hilltop Haulage rigid at the Patent Shaft roundabout on the A41 near Wednesbury, if either of the drivers is reading this.
Slackbladder:
Guys, you’re wasting your time, he just will not admit to having done it, seen it or even heard about it. Two wheels bad, more wheels good etc.
Why would I want to admit to something which in my own personal experience isn’t true and ‘hearing about it second hand’ isn’t the same thing as ‘my own personal experience’.Whereas I have seen plenty of stupid suicidal cyclists undertake/filter alongside trucks and buses and cars with obvious potential implications.Which is why the signs in question have been put on vehicles and it’s obvious that it’s those suicidal cyclists who wish to continue to undertake alongside vehicles who want them removed. It’s got nothing whatsoever to do with vehicles supposedly overtaking cyclists and then turning on them.

In which case you’ve witnessed and been involved in a case of dangerous driving so why didn’t you report it to the police. In addition to which there’s loads of cyclists using video cameras but for ‘some’ reason we’re not seeing evidence of such driving and/or resulting prosecutions. Why is that.

The police wouldn’t have been interested. I didn’t make a big song and dance about it because there was no harm done, I was just making the point that it does happen. For the record, I’ve also had cyclists filter up the inside of my trailer while I’ve been indicating left at traffic lights. There are idiots on bikes and idiots driving trucks, that’s all.
As I said, you’ve never done it, you’ve never seen it & you won’t admit it might, just might possibly happen by even the worst trucker on the road. It’s always the cyclist going up the inside and happily riding forward with the truck moving & indicating of course, because all truckers do, to get crushed. That will be because we are all suicidal and are prepared to die under a truck to get our point across!
The sign they are complaining about is the one saying “stay back” as if that means the driver doesn’t have to bother checking his mirrors. Does it also mean that other motor vehicles shouldn’t overtake them? It doesn’t say don’t pass on the inside like some others I’ve seen & are much better at getting that message across.

So the basis of your argument,is that the sign in question, being put on the back of a truck or bus, includes the instruction to it’s driver, that they won’t need to use the nearside mirrors at all times as required when driving the vehicle, just as before. As opposed to it just being there to ( try to ) lessen the very real possibility ( proven by experience ) of cyclists undertaking large vehicles which are potentially turning.Remembering that it’s possible for a cyclist to be in such a position without being noticed even though the mirrors are being used sufficiently and correctly.
CF, no one is disputing that the signs you mention are on the backs of lorries in order ot discourage cyclists from filtering down the left sides of stationarry left turning lorries at traffic lights. We know that this happens, we all know it’s a very unwise thng for a cyclist to do and anything that might stop it happening is a good thing. No one is arguing with you on that score.
However, the only reason this argument arose in the first place was that you seemed to be disputing the fact that lorries (and cars) will sometimes turn left into cyclists. You have been shown to be wrong on this point … if possible, do you think we could skip the usual tiresome twelve page debate about something which was never open to question in the first place?

Yes they are firstly in regard to the news report concerning the cyclist groups themselves objecting to the signs in question and then in Chester’s case in seeming to agree with their objection.
The past few months i’ve been taking wide and long loads into central london, we have all the legal flashing lights etc for other road users fitted.
Cyclists ignore them
it’s a fact till other road users not just us and car/taxi drivers are made aware of just what we can see and what a HGV needs to get around streets not designed for that sort of traffic then accidents like this will happen but as always the HGV driver is always to blame.

So your saying the streets of London are not designed for commercial traffic, and accidents will happen?
99% of cyclists ignore any warning signs and red lights, normal highway code doesn’t apply to them.
If i’m in london i take as much of the road up as possible to make sure i can see whats around me where in normal situations i would’nt think of doing it.
I play them at there own game if i block a road etc then tough s**t i’m not ending up being blamed for some idiot who thinks the rules don’t apply to him/her.

Can you give me a idea of these wide and long loads?
PM me if you want.

For starters it’s not my argument it’s London cyclists. Read & digest my quote above, that’s what they are complaining about.it’s not about going up the inside. You didn’t answer the question re other vehicles.

Do you have any evidence to support that percentage? Why would you not try & see what’s around you in normal situations? Surely you should be doing that at all times when behind the wheel
chester:
Stuh where you running these Long and wide loads which in your opinion should not be on the streets of London?
I have a genuine interest?
The company i work for take railtrack, portable buildings into different places within london and they are various widths and lengths.
I took a long load into baker street last week to a site and lost count the amount of time not just cyclists but pedestrians put themselves at risk while i was getting to the site and reversing onto the site was unreal, even with people out on the street to stop them they still ignored the warnings.
You can only do so much to warn people but in london everyone is too much of a rush
