Just received an email from my regular agency telling me they intend to take £1 per shift off to cover accident cover for their “ever more demanding customers”. Is this common as my initial thought is to tell them to go forth and multiply!

I’ve never heard of it before but that would be my reaction.
Accident insurance, and all other types of insurance for that matter, is a business expense just like any other business expense and should be paid by the company/agency
Send them a letter explaining that due to ever increasing financial pressures that you are with great regret being forced to increase your rates by £1.50 per hour in order to maintain the level of service they enjoy from you.

I’ve done agency work for the thick end of 20 years and have never heard and never paid this.
Accident cover is the agency’s responsibility and they most likely already have insurance to cover this.

Gets my vote.
Bend over boy, you got ur own lube or not ?
As you are or might be paying for this so called ‘Accident Insurance’ you are entitled to know exactly what it is you’re paying for … robbin ■■■■■■■■■ !!
New one on me. My reaction would be go forth and self replicate, though to be fair I don’t think my agency would try a stunt like that.
I too would tell them to introduce my position to their tea towel holder.
Well I sent a suitable reply and was informed that this is a common practice amongst agencies. We have agreed to differ!

But are they still going to rob your quid off you, and what are your plans if they do?
Ask them if you will get the tax relief from their business expense.
They won’t rob a quid as I will go elsewhere. I’m not full time so I’ll stand on my principles which may sound a bit daft but someone has to. Even in the depths of the winter lull I’ll take a chance.
surely £1 per shift to a agency driver is neither here nor there

Doesn’t sound daft to me at all mate, but for every one of you that speaks up there will be 10 sorryarsed wimps that will say abso ■■■■ all , and that is what these type of Agencies AND companies bank on when they come up with these driver shafting schemes.
For the sake of £1 per shift, is it really worth the hassle of upsetting all the workforce and potentially losing your best drivers? The lows that agencies will stoop to just to squeeze some more money out of their drivers will never cease to amaze me. Then in the next breath they’re belly-aching about how they can’t get good drivers.
Name and shame this outfit
