this was much easier than Royal Mail yesterday under many terms:
just one drop: Crawley to Coventry (run back empty)
Loading and unloading all done by fork lift drivers (with RM have to push all the cages off trailer)
no swapping trailers
NO CENTRAL London (or any town centre)
just easy straight motorway and A road driving, no worries about bridges/cyclists/etc
stopped at services for a pee and got to park in lorry-park, felt ‘so good’ to be part of it rather than stop amongst ‘mortals’ in the car-park hahahahaha
got to wave at many fellow truck drivers on motorway as we overtook each other too (so some socialising but not too much )
Actually, today’s shift really reminded me how much I MISS tramping
I am now in my heart crying to be back onto tramping but my wallet (erm…■■■■■ as I am female) will not allow me to go back to it as I earn more on my ‘midwife job’ (■■■■ I so do not want to go back to the hospital now that I got my taste back with trucks…)
Swampey2418:
Why dont you just go agency for the midwife work…wouldnt that pay more than NHS salary
I could go agency for the Midwife job yes swampey…
‘however’ if I take up a full time job tramping it won’t leave me enough time to work additional shifts as a Midwife on agency…will it?
I would need to do probably 2 shifts a week as a Midwife ‘on top’ of full time tramping…to keep a salary similar to what I have now…don’t think it’s possible
even if I do 4 on and 4 off UK tramping…I still could not do 2 shifts every week as a Midwife as I need the ‘bleeding’ long rest for my driving job
we’ll see what the future brings hey? as they say: things usually work out they way they are meant to be if you just leave it to unfold…
Swampey2418:
Yes but all this work work work… what about home life gal…you still need abit of me time… some sort of social life ?
I’m quite a loner Swampey. .I do like a chat and a laugh here and there but feel quite good with my own company…
Perhaps that is one of the reasons why I never married [emoji12]
Its not a case of being a loner… its a personal choice of life style… no one to keeping track of your whereabouts…come and go as you please, eat what you want when you want…dam this sounds like heaven…lol

well, yes I think you’re right, it is because of all of the above I have been single for a ‘very long’ time, not having to compromise on anything
but anyway…I love being on the road, I do like my flat (that is why am paying a mortgage on it!) but the truck is much more fun
Sounds like your heart is more with the truck driving, although midwifery pays better. I personally think being a midwife is an awesome job, I couldn’t personally do it as I am better working on my own plus the stress would kill me.

yes, this indeed…unfortunately am tied down by debts and mortgage… I also have a 19yr old son who still relies on me, maybe when he releases his wings and flies solo I can sell the house and go and live in a truck

Try and get the shifts that do parcel force where you don’t gave to touch anything - just drop and swap trailers.
Hi m1cks thanks for tip, although I don’t really want to do that…I want to be like ‘anyone else’ so I’ll take what I’m given
I ‘hate’ the empty ‘yorks’ runs, they are so ‘ackward’ to unload, can’t stand them, did 2 of those runs today…I much prefer them when they are loaded.
I have to say I could not do this job full time, it bores me quite a lot, not my cup of tea.
I like the LONG stretches of driving on motorways/A roads with stops in random places for my break, sleeping in the truck, do one drop every other day.
I just love driving and with Royal Mail it’s more coupling/uncoupling trailers, doing checks over checks (as you never know who last used the unit and you always have a new trailer, check paper work, check this and that), drive for an hour and then load/unload for half an hour and so on (you also speak to the ‘office’ too much for my liking, I used to speak to my boss once a week in the old tramping days LOL). Then home at the end of the 8 hours. No, not for me, but it will do for now as an ‘ad-hoc’ shift to give me back the experience in reversing and other bits and bobs so for this I am very grateful, and all amongst a bunch of very friendly RM drivers/operators, they are all nice
