An observation

Dennis

Reading this lot, I’m inclined to think maybe you’re going stir crazy!
You know what they say, ‘Old Truckers never die, they just lose their gears!’.
Things could be worse, your wife could look out the paintbrushes!
Ask Dave, Liz makes him cut the grass before he phones me! I try to chill him out.
What one old S.o.M Driver will do for another!

What we need is another (Lost?) cause like a Gardner 240 in S.o.M. Big J!
Any suggestions?
Alex
P.S. Here’s a few from Perth last Autumn.

Hiya Alex, how’s things,I hope your well ! nice few shots there, the ERF would be my choice !! Is it true that Liz makes him trim the edges of his grass with nail scissors ?

Mr Saville and Mr Berwick…and l thought l could trust you two…

Carryfast , I will not debate with a person who back track and make up as you go , good bye , my point on Leylands , Mr Kennnetts book is great and I like his style being a fellow engineer ...apart from the Meteoor bit , so AS I SAID was he given the wrong info ? from Leyland sales dept, , the point is having the hands on experience to tell a Leyland from an Albion , Is a Bedford , Foden or a Dodge ect with a Leyland Engine a Leyland ? NO and an Albion was an Albion up to 1972 , sorry but if you would have taken these apart and rebuilt them , then you would question the Leyland bullcrapand find conformation of who built these , One of thespecial `models for Denmark was the Leyland Chieftain ( LAD or Danish cabin ) , this was in fact an Albion Chieftain built in Glasgow ,with all the Leyland badges on it , NO MATTER WHAT BCVM SAY !

Carryfast is fully occupied giving advice to all and sundry on Bully’s Truckstop Bar Forum concerning the 2015 Election Exit Poll . Long may it keep him occupied. :unamused:

Is that the Guy that Insisted that Petrol is explosive ? because it is on make believe TV and films ? he goes straight to Wikipedia to find support and knowledge , he says Detonation is explosion , when in fact Detonation is not normal in petrol engines and causes Pinking, Running on after switch off and uncorrected can blow a hole in a piston ! Sorry but I spent four years training on Petrols and another extra year on Diesel motors , some people just sit in the armchair jumping to the conclusion, look at ALL the British mags for Classic Lorries , writers put two and two and get five as the answer , Interesting I just got Pat Kennetts old book Leyland from World trucks series , some crap in that about Leyland Comets sold in Holland asMeteoors` and this was copied by Ingram and Edge later , so Like the schoolteacher ,I know this because ALL have the same wrong answer , so maybe Kennett was given wrong info ? or jumped to the conclusions.

The following article was quoted from a Dutch publication, so it’s not just the British:
commercialmotor.com/big-lorr … dutch-with

The original author’s name, however, has a strong whiff of Leatherhead about it:
Wim van Loon of Transmobiel truck & bus magazine

yes FOR A START the Leyland 0.400S was 125 horse net ,131 gross, Denmark always quoted 131 , these are all Albion shown .

I blame the lurkers. The forum does go a bit flat from time to time but you cannot expect the same posters to keep going all the time. I know some people don’t want to get shot down in flames but I’m sure there are a lot who could chip in now and again; even if it is only to give a bit of encouragement to those who put up some interesting stuff.
I have been off work a lot and the forum has been a great source of enjoyment during that time; I felt obliged to put up some stuff as a way of saying thank-you. There must be plenty of Trucknet members reading this who could dig around on the Internet and find pictures and information that would make a new thread.

How about this for a new topic , does anyone think it would be possible to start from scratch and build up a multi vehicle fleet nationwide , I for one think not with so much current legislation , fuel prices and the big players taking the cream of the business

It may not be totally impossible up start up as a young O/D to-day but unless you accept the fact that you would have to be a full time “subbie” for a large operator which in turn would mean your destiny would be controlled totally not to mention that your earnings would also be below par.Now that was an option that I never considered when I started as a young O/D in early’68 but then again Carriers licencing was still in force and my “A” licence was my key to building up decent traffic flows to and from London and the S.East, which apart from the first three months I started when I did a bit of “allsorts” I quickly got started running out of Libbys factory at Milnthorpe and they had plenty of traffic for a 10 tonner down to London! I was then able to develop good contacts for back loading all kinds of general traffic and lucrative small consignments as there was no-way did London hauliers want to venture further North than L’pool or Man/cr so although I was “subbing” it was on my terms not wanting to put too much emphasis on it!! A little story comes to mind of when I actually started at Libbys,I was sheeting my load one day when this [zb] of a manager of RO Hodgsons (a large local haulier at the time) approached me and asked right out “How did you manage to get into Libbys you’d be far better off running full time for us as I can load you to and from anywhere” I told him “to go and [zb] his self”!! This same [zb] a few years later was caught in K.Fells yard one Sunday morning looking under their sheets to see what they were loaded with,it’s a good job it was prior to 1976 when I bought Fells out as I would have kicked the [zb] all over the yard !! Happy Days Cheers Bewick.

Well the point is exactly how you were able to start up Dennis , you had a company locally that were willing to allocate you plenty of work and you found the reloads to make the system work, Im not saying it was easy I have no doubt you worked extremely hard to make your business what it became , its the lack of opportunities out there now .The problem now is that most companies usually contract their work out so the subbies only get what the contractors cant cover or cant do for whatever reason. Everythings nailed down to the bone, then ever rising fuel prices (anyone else noticed they are creeping up again ?), ever changing legislation its now a minefield , I personally can`t see it being possible , no doubt someone will prove me wrong … hopefully !!!

Two potentially opposing points of view have been expressed (among others) regarding the gathering together of information. On one hand, there is a preference for topics not to be multiply split into so many sub-groups; and on the other hand a preference for threads that don’t become too long.

The ERF European 1975 thread was a classic example. It was becoming quite long so a sub-thread called LHD ERF 5MWs was created so that we could better distinguish between the two. This then led to a snowball effect because all the other sub-groups of the subject ‘ERF European’ had to be given threads of their own in order follow suit. For a very small group that was fine but it made it difficult for new voices to enter because they have found it impossible to navigate the multitude of threads. It was at its most counter-productive when ‘E-R-F’ brought a large, dense quantity of useful material to the table and found that there were a dozen tables, not just one! Even the most dedicated among us ended up going round in circles on that occasion. However, it did prevent the original thread becoming as long as the Welsh one.

Perhaps one answer would be to create clusters of threads (ERF, Middle-East etc) but the problem with that is that strands run laterally across any titles we create (Middle-East ERFs for example). It’s a tricky subject. Robert

Further to my earlier comments, here are some interesting figures:

There are 9 Euro-specific (LHD etc) ERF threads in current use. If they were merged you’d end up with 107 pages.

There are 8 other ERF threads (UK, South Africa etc) in current use. If they were merged you’d end up with 70 pages.

There are 17 ERF threads over all in current use. If they were merged you’d end up with 177 pages.

Regarding Dave cutting the edges of the grass with nail clippers, no, Liz doesn’t (So he tells me anyway!) make him do that.
However, I don’t want to get on the wrong side of Liz so I’ll take the ‘Fifth’ on the matter.
I also don’t want to strain Anglo-French / Scottish relations any so maybe I should quit while I’m ahead!

Getting by myself if not quite as healthy as I would like.
And You?

Here’s some more from Perth.

Dave

Course you can trust me, mate!
After all, you’re half Scottish!
Since you live in the Celtic part of La Belle France, that makes you almost a cousin!

It may just be my impression but at the risk of being ex-communicated do I detect that the this TN site is currently failing to attract the same level of interest it has done over previous years ? Bewick.

Personally I think it’s because there are too many keyboard warriors on here and the minute anything you’ve said is doubted or people don’t agree you get slaughtered, bullied from all directions. That’s why I very rarely submit anymore.

There are some idiots, but it’s usually them on the receiving end. This is a good thing, IMO, because the more interesting posters are more likely to be put off by drivel than hostile reactions to drivel.

for my this forum have been very important part of my days ,all i know of british lorry industry i have learned here ,and the inspiration of my drawings of your lorries came from here, and of cause the transport history over there ,in some things like scandinavian markes and policy i can contribute and comment,so i like

Hello Robert. I have to admit to"lurking" for the last few weeks cos my laptop went hot and sweaty. Got it fixed now, so will swell the numbers again.
I Pads are OK but like ERFs you can’t beat the real deal.
Good post Dennis - great to know you care. Jim.

Haha, we all know one of those! :unamused: Seriously, I frequent several forums and ALL of them are slack on postings at present and all are asking much the same question “Where is everyone?” so not confined to this one. I post things as I think that I remember them from years ago, alas I am wrong on occasions but at least it gets a reaction from folk who correct me so gets a result!

Pete.

Hi my real name is Gary, and I agree totally with what you have said and I loved some of the discussions on this forum especially between Dennis and CF

I do visit everyday and still comment as you can see but sometimes I look at some of the topics and the things that people are saying and think…no way am I getting involved in that.

But as I said I still poke my nose in and love the craic and banter even if it’s from the sidelines, no tin hat required that way

NO!! but !!! I did spend 30 years with a woman who did
