In this era of planning and logistics why is so much time wasted waiting. You have to book in only to sit there for sometimes hours to get tipped. I know I am paid hourly but what a waste. Grrrr
Booked in at 7.45am arrived 7.30am after 2 hour drive 9am and not even on weighbridge yet.
This could have and SHOULD have been sorted when the 48hr/WTD came in, but the powers that be did not have the balls to stand up to the likes of Tesco etc, and copped out with the POA b/s, shafting us, the drivers, yet again. After saying that I am on an hourly rate so as far as I’m concerned bring it on, and I found a long time ago that if you are in a hurry and you are told it will be a while, the best way to deal with it is a…Tell them you aint fussed and to wake you up when they are ready. b…Let them see you with feet on wheel casually reading your paper or sleeping… I will guarantee you will be tipped within 15mins because 9 times out of 10 it’s down to a knobhead on a power trip just out to ■■■■ you off …ok maybe not at RDCs
Waiting in RDCs for hours upon end used to absolutely infuriate me, but now I’ve got this ipad I’ve got my films to watch and make a little money on ebay buying and selling. So Iam just going use the lost hours to my advantage from now.

Dont even get me started on this, charging demurrage should be made compulsory by law. The change in transport would be massive if this was to happen.
A valid point
Lets say I work as a picker at an Rdc my shift finishes at 1400 so I book a taxi to take me home at 1405 I get delayed counting my big rolls and ask the taxi driver to wait till 1430
And I’m sure hell say ok the meters running
In all seriousness apart from unforeseen delays an hour is plenty of time to allow 26 pallets to get tipped of a lorry anything over an hour should be charged to the Rdc for running a cluster ■■■■ of an operation
was out of bed at 3am this morning ,"3 pallets to carluke first thing …@ 6ish " got there at 6.15 . goods in didnt open till 8■■? ok a couple of hrs pay for reading a magazine and listening to allinson ,but a 5.o clock rise would have been more attractive. getting uptight about it wouldnt help anyone so just chill
I run for Tarmac and they charge waiting after the first hour but most of the laying gangs ain’t bothered they just sign the ticket, they ain’t paying
Usually if its direct to the “payee” your in and tipped in seconds
From the point of view of an RDC manager - all those trailers waiting to be unloaded are free storage. They have no incentive at all to give delivering trucks a quick turnaround because it costs them nothing.
In some cases they may have a contract with a haulier which includes some sort of demurrage. You can bet that these trucks get priority.
While most independent hauliers will do their best to keep their trucks and trailers running as many profitable hours as possible, one only has to drive past an RDC to see the numbers of idle units which would spell disaster for a haulier.
Being a goods in clerk must be a boring and unrewarding occupation, and those people who have to deal with all the irate drivers do have my sympathy. It isn’t [usually] their fault that you are delayed.
The joys of working on pallet networks. As long as we arrive on time, we give it 15mins. If we haven’t been unloaded, phone the gaffer. He makes a phone call to the sending depot who then has to phone his customer and warn them that their goods won’t be getting delivered if the truck hasn’t been tipped in 15mins. So basicly we get 30mins to get tipped or else we get pulled out and the sender is charged a redelivery fee for our troubles.
We now get special treatment at Morrisons Bellshill. No matter what time of the day the pallets are booked in at, as long as we are there for 7am, we get tipped right away. All we need now is to get the same special treatment at Asda Grangemouth.
Anyone who has delivered to Amazon in Swansea will know all about the relationship between booking in time and getting tipped.
Last year we had a contract with a client to deliver three loads every Saturday morning booked in for O8.00.They give you a window of plus or minus 30 minutes, fair do’s.
But that means ■■■■ all!
Once you are booked in,you are at their mercy.
The first Saturday morning we arrived there were trucks from the night before pulling out of the queue because they bcould not get tipped.
There are 20 receiving bays but only 3 working because they have not enough staff!.
On most occasions the last of the three of us tipping has just made it back to base with minutes short of 15 hours duty. Not bad when you are hourly paid for a job that should be done in 8/9 hours!
The last load I took they could not tip so my office told me to bring it back to the yard in Stoke.
I took the same trailer down on the following two weeks and they could not tip it!
At the beginning of the folowing week the load was sent back to our customer with the request for some one else to deliver it.
I don’t believe we have done any more deliveries since for Amazon.
You can’t really blame the staff. We were told that as Amazon is an American firm, the staff are paid only flat rate ALL THROUGH,no overtime rate, the only bank holidays observed are Christmas day and Boxing day and if the English didn’t like it,tough!
It seems the Yanks are treating us like a third world country.
I got used to it when i was on containers…and a lot tried that old chestnut give us a hand drive and you will be away a lot quicker…give us a knock later after ive had my breakfast, why do people think because you have brought there goods its your job to tip it, i would give them a hand if asked politely…give me attitude forget it.
I was fuelling up on the A1 recently and got talked at by a bloke who works at a Tesco DC. I commented that I was glad I didn’t have to deliver to RDC’s as the waiting would do my head in.
He said: “I’ll give you a good tip for getting tipped quickly. Offer to make the warehouse staff a brew and you’ll be done in no time”
So… I do my own work, get there on time, still have work to do, but you want me to then make them a brew! They should making us one for the wait! Couldn’t believe my ears. So did he expect us to find the coffee machine for this, or maybe to ask where their staff kitchen is? I didn’t ask him as I had an emergency phone call due and had to leave immediately
So whats the solution sit in some RDC waiting to be tipped for hours or get tipped in ten minutes then sit out on the road for hours waiting for a back load?
Too many trucks grubbing for too little work.
Problem is the likes of Wincanton,Stobart etc have trucks sat in their yards doing sod all as there is not enough work to cover them all.So what the hell if they are sat at Tescos for hours on end they would only be sat idle some where else.
And as for you delivering the goods but no way should you help tip it fine, but if a postman arrived at your door and said I got a parcel in the back of my van for you,now Ive deliverd it but you got to come and get it out my van what would you say?
