I’ve seen both sides of the story. You’re booked in at 1500, you arrive at 1430 so in good time. Shift change over where you’re delivering is at 1430 but they’re working overtime to cover your arrival.
Manager at DC has arranged for overtime for staff to accept your load but the 5 blokes at 1330 decide that they now don’t want to work overtime so the manager now has you arrivng just as the staff are leaving.
Seen it loads, just like I’ve sat on my back side at Sainsbury at Stoke for 4 hours.
Most of us complain about waiting but few of us have actually witnessed what goes on in your average DC.
In our game the tippers are allowed up to 60 minutes for unloading (to aid with hand lay jobs ect…) any more than that is charged back to the customer and a waiting time document is filled in, with time waiting and reasoning. It does help them to get a move on sometimes.
And if nothing else, being payed while the wagons costing nothing is a very big win

To be fair Dew, there aint no such animal as a “free” wagon. Granted fuel and wear and tear aren’t factors but wages still need to be paid, insurance and road tax are an ongoing cost, even (to a lesser extent) vehicle depreciation can be factored in.
So yes, demurrage is the way forward, but until the big players such as NDL, DHL, Stobbies etc develop a spine and demand it, the smaller ones aren’t gonna get it.
As an ex O/D it’s a vicious circle because if previous experience tells you that a certain delivery will tie your vehicle and driver up for X hours and you price for that, someone else will always quote lower. Thank God I’m an employee now.
Yesterday due to the inefficiency of the depot in Rushden my company missed out on a full load. I was sheduled to do three 26 pallet tips but only managed two and the second was arriving at the destination with ten minutes to spare
jessicas dad:
and the look off surprise when you turn up with 26 pallets as if they are not expecting it.![]()

This always amazes me.
The worst RDC I have been to is/was the Woolworths RDC in Swindon. Only once did I ever go there and come out in less than an hour. 4 hours was common.
Bking:
So whats the solution sit in some RDC waiting to be tipped for hours or get tipped in ten minutes then sit out on the road for hours waiting for a back load?Too many trucks grubbing for too little work.
Problem is the likes of Wincanton,Stobart etc have trucks sat in their yards doing sod all as there is not enough work to cover them all.So what the hell if they are sat at Tescos for hours on end they would only be sat idle some where else.
And as for you delivering the goods but no way should you help tip it fine, but if a postman arrived at your door and said I got a parcel in the back of my van for you,now Ive deliverd it but you got to come and get it out my van what would you say?
Exactly the reason, too many lorries, not enough freight!!!

If the postie reversed his van right up to my front door I wouldn’t mind taking the parcel out of his van. Hardly a comparison really.

They give you a window of plus or minus 30 minutes, fair do’s.Thats good. Amazon Dunfermline only gives you 10mins either way.
Sorry to bump an old post, but is this right? I was hoping to try my luck an hour and a half early. Do they give fines for being early?
Our lot will pull you out if you are kept over 2 hours then they charge the company for failed delivery or collection. For our Scania contract, we have 45 minutes upon arrival for the goods to be ready and loaded before we have to leave then Scania fine the company.

Our mob refuse to take any work for Amazon now so not sure if things have changed. But somehow I doubt it. I don’t think your customer will get a hefty fine though. Security guards just won’t let you on site if you are early.
