This talk of radio hams reminds of of the Roger Waters album Radio Kaos. Only radio ham I seem to do is trying to contact Africans in a tin shed in the middle of the night on HF :imp:

Don’t do mobile from the truck but do a lot from the car.

I’m not currently driving for a living but have 2m/70cm in the pickup if that counts.

… Used to listen to the HF Band Top-Band 160m to 10m, and 2m 144 -145 Megs. Also member
of the local Radio Club… GW3XJF. Fond memories. Might get round to going for the licence one day. Q:- Is the Morse test still required for the Sound ( ? ) A or B Licence?..

Class A and B licenses ended in 2008 and the morse test has long been dropped. The license is now a 3 tier one with varying privileges on bands and power limits however access to all but a couple of HF bands is available to the entry level foundation license, albeit with a 10W limit. There’s no requirement for morse anymore however there’s a “morse appreciation” practical test at the foundation level which just involves someone sending some slow morse and you decoding it with a crib sheet in front of you and you can ask them to resend as many times as you need. You can write down the dits and dahs as they’re being sent then decode them with the crib sheet so as you can see, no knowledge of morse is required.

I’ve got a General Operators Certificate for marine use, 7 day course in Aberdeen nautical college and cost around me £500 iirc, bit pointless I think as satellite comms have done away with a lot of the MF/HF use, mainly use the VHF for short range comms.

Greetings Conor and thanks for the info on the Morse test thing.
I do, on occasion, buy the Practical Wireless and EPE Publications to see what’s new and
tackle some construction projects.
The gear I had years ago consisted of all valve stuff… Eddystone 840A Rx for the HF and
an ex- utility Murphy transceiver; Xtal controlled for the 2m 144 & 145Mhz Rx only.
As I lived out in sticks then, there was no shortage of antenna space for the HF, and had
a J Beam 8-over-8 for the 2m stuff… the rotator was manual… Two yard brushes
gaffer-taped together and a gentle ‘smack’ to point it in the right direction!!!..

Thanks again & safe journies.

Same here yet the good old USA FCC insist that I take their exams - 3 modules of about 300 questions all multichoice gives me the same with GMDSS qualifications - cost $120 for exams. Not sure you’d pass without some background knowledge however the question pool is available to view for anyone.

I will put my hand up as an Amateur Radio Licence holder, although I can’t really call myself an operator these days, even though as I type this I have 2M and 70cm transceivers hanging from a shelf above me, and a couple or 3 HF rigs about the house!

Took my morse test at the ships radio office in Liverpool; it was a few years ago now.

My radios (Icom 7400 and kenwood TS50/AT50) are gathering dust in the loft… keep thinking I should get them down and dust off the “cobwebb” to take advantage of the peak in the 11 year cycle (that I seem to miss every time!)
