6.6 million pounds raised in fines. And all in the name of “road safety”.
Given that DVSA are fining drivers for breaches of driving hours rules often not taking sufficient rest, defective vehicles and unsecure loads then they’re doing a hell of a lot more for safety than speed cameras do.
Quite clearly you’ve an axe to grind and I can only guess it’s because they’ve handed you a fine in the past. One wonders how bad you have to be to get such a fine as I’ve managed my entire 25+ years in lorries without ever handing them a penny.
Alright warburtons, let me try this another way. Why is road enforcement so reactionary? Issuing 6.6 million pounds in fines to vehicles which shouldn’t be on the road is too late, THEY’RE ALREADY ON THE [zb] ROAD! Why are hundreds of thousand of pounds in speeding fines issued? They are already speeding? Why are so many police cars unmarked? If they’re catching someone doing something they shouldnt, it’s too late. They’re already doing it!
Why isnt road safety enforcement proactive? Why arent dvsa visiting yards? Why isnt there a more visible police presence on the road to deter people from driving like pillocks?
You are right, I do have an axe to grind. But that’s because I, like you, have to share the roads with these idiots. And whilst road safety enforcement is simply reactive, road safety will not improve, the figures above show us that. And it sticks in my throat when they go bragging about raising millions of pounds in fines whilst I go out and deal with muppets every single night.
Proactive action?
A stricter and properly tested CPC for instance? Weed out the ignorant?
Publicising checks and the fines given, as a deterrent? As they are here.
The rules aren’t sprung on us from a shadowy, secret organisation. Their enforcement doesn’t happen out of the public gaze.

Honestly I doubt a stricter DCPC would make much difference. There are cowboys capable of passing. Most who break the laws and drive unroadworthy vehicles know exactly what they are doing and the ones that don’t need putting down.
It may be a start though along with a far stricter driving test. The problem at the moment is there is NOT enough enforcement and far too many slipping through the net.
If you don’t like fines stay legal. It ain’t hard.

I take it you’ve got an issue with it because you’ve been done speeding because you didn’t think a speed limit applied to you and you disagree with the fine? YOUR original topic on this thread is about DVSA doing spot checks on commercial vehicles for drivers hours and vehicle defects. Nothing to do with speeding. If you wanted to start a thread about your issue with speeding fines then why don’t you start a topic with a title that suggests that.
And to answer your question about why isnt there a bigger police presence on the roads…come on, are you really asking that? Are you aware of all the cuts that the party who have just been re-elected implemented? Besides, if there were to be more police on the roads everyone would jut say they are picking on poor motorists and should be catching burglars.
So road deaths have stayed more or less at the same figures despite the constant and massive increase in population due entirely to immigration, i call that a win if you divide the total (real not official figured) population by road death numbers.
Then we have one figure given for DVSA fines, which also fails to take into account the huge number of foreign regd lorries on the road which i have no doubt account for a large portion of said fines.
Neither of these graphs show the number of foreign drivers involved, whether in a foreign or British regd vehicle, only the most brainwashed can have failed to notice just how many high profile road death cases involve foreign drivers, not as this excludes the home grown from their share of the blame.
The issue with speeding fines is that they are the result of mostly automated enforcement, not requiring a non-existing or busy monitoring supposed hate speech police officer to witness and report poor driving, dare say those new motorway cameras have played an ever increasing part.
You have to be pretty dumb to get flashed by a motorway camera, whether the ones over each lane or those large bright yellow monsters bolted to the ns gantry, camera spotting is now part of everyday driving.
That’s it. Blame the foreigners. Typical Brit reaction.
Our recent trip has covered Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and now Singapore and as I always find compared to UK drivers the standards are far higher. They are in general far more patient drivers and always give way to pedestrians no matter what. Most of them could teach us a few manners for sure.
Unfortunately saintly drivers from those countries don’t make up the majority of foreign drivers within these shores, next you’ll be telling us that Indian roads and drivers are the safest in the world

I apologise, I assumed you’d have the intelligence to make the links in the points I was making. And we all know what happens when you assume.
Let me try again, a third way.
Whether its speeding, unsafe vehicles or tachograph infringements, they’re all issues of road safety. Three different sides of the same problem. I have concerns with the way that these issues with road safety are handled. Dealing with them retrospectively is too late, unsafe situations have already happened on the roads. They must have done for them to be caught. But by then, surely it’s too late. It must be a better option to stop these thing from happening on our roads in the first place.
My issue isnt with these people getting caught. I dont care one jot, it’s their own fault. My issue is with the fact that these people are allowed to do it in the first place. But preventative measures dont raise millions of pounds for the governments coffers. That leads me to believe that the primary function of all this road safety enforcement is actually to raise money and NOT to keep me safe as I do my job every night.
I do hope that was simple enough for you to understand because I’m running out of different ways to say the same thing.

Well, can you suggest any way of achieving your admirable objective?
If you can see a way to prevent bad driving I doubt you’d find much opposition.
.
There is technology to limit vehicle speeds with geo-location isn’t there? But if that would reduce accident rates, I don’t know. Maybe it’s one less thing to keep bad drivers awake going!
.
I take the point that fining people for bad driving is retrospective, and not preventive, but what alternatives exist?
If speed is such a bad thing why when I watch the police programs on tv why are they so keen to chase drivers who aren’t speeding until they see police behind them

Preventative measures right.
Well how about here’s a Highway Code and here’s a copy of the road traffic act. You need to abide by all these rules when on the road.
Next here is some tuition and a driving test with a qualified examiner to make sure your safe and can abide by those rules.
Next here is a full DVSA guide to operators and drivers alike giving a full set of rules and dos and donts regarding hours, vehicle condition and maintenance, load security, passenger safety etc.
They are the preventative measures right there, whilst also giving people and companies the freedom to do it without big brother watching over.
Unfortunately many just find it too hard to stick to the rules which is why reactive measures have to then be in place.

Because they are chasing them for matters which aren’t related to a traffic offence a lot of the time. It’s the police choosing to speed in those situations is it. For whatever reason they want that person in the car for all sorts of reasons and sometimes it’s deemed necessary to speed to achieve that.

But half the time they no who the driver is before they chase them though housing estates

So let me get this straight.
The police go dealing with traffic offences and they should be out catching burglars, rapists, armed robbers, and drug dealers.
The police chase a burglar, ■■■■■■, armed robber, or drug dealer in the car and go over the speed limits in order to do this, and they shouldn’t be speeding because the rest of us aren’t allowed to.
Let have no police and a lawless state shall we and that will solve all our problems
So you think it’s ok for the police to start a chase at 2 or 3 times the limit though built up areas instead of just stopping them quietly and most of the time the people they chase haven’t done anything

“Hello Mx Night Owl, I’m very sorry to inform you that your loved one wont be coming home today. They were involved in a serious RTA with a defective lorry. The lorry belonged to a company well known for non compliance but frankly, your loved one wasnt worth the cost of a visit to their premises. We just though we’d wait until they passed one of our checkpoints and pull them in there. Unfortunately, the trailer wheel came off before it got to us. It’s a bit like the England cricket team you see, they dont catch them all either. But look on the bright side, we’ve raised over six and a half million pounds that’ll disappear into the black hole of the treasury”
Nearly 9,000 people have died on our roads in the last 5 years, one of them was particularly important to me. But it’s ok, because now I know what value the government put on their life.

Well your wrong there, it’s never the police that start a chase. They put the blue lights on to signal to the driver of the car that they want them to stop, that driver decides otherwise and takes off. It’s them starting the chase. If you think police putting blue lights in means they want to chase you then you’ve been playing too much GRand theft auto on the PlayStation.
If they put on the blue lights and the car speeds off what would the public like them to do? Oh let’s just leave it as that nice man clearly didn’t want to chat to us. Oh well let’s move on. Are you living on another planet? How can any police force fight crime without now and again engaging in a pursuit?

Well if you’ve lost someone in this way then I’m going to stop this discussion over a forum on the matter as I don’t think that’s appropriate.
I do wonder though, how do you suggest current levels of traffic police and DVSA officers can possibly have time to do what you suggest? And surely theyd get the whole shouldn’t you be fighting proper crime from everyone.
