Could there have been retrospective tweaking of mirror arms?
I always wondered why AEC had the full width top grills over the Leyland and Albion Ergos? AEC always looked smarter until the ugly square grill with horizontal bars.
Bewick wrote; PS I wonder if this Marshal was a late “E” reg and it did in fact have the re positioned mirrors prior to the reg nos. changing to “F” reg in August '67.
I was thinking the same Dennis you can’t rule it out, as we know nothing is certain in transport. The longer top chrome grilles may have just been an AEC identification point but begs the question why didn’t Leyland and Albion cabs use the longer grille when the cab was profiled for them. Early cabs also didn’t have the indentation along the door from the handles which appeared only a short time later. AEC’s did have wider front wings than the Leyland and Albion cabs but there was a reason here. The AEC’s had been designed with the 1964 Regulations in mind when it was expected 11.00 x 20 wheels would become the size used for the higher weights proposed with the new regs, which in the end didn’t happen that year. It seems possibly AEC still had some decisions they could make without Leyland interference whereas Albion were pretty much under their control. The mirror arms move by the way was due to the mirrors suffering from road dirt thrown up by the wheels in that position and the new location helped resolve that although the Marshal in the photo doesn’t have the arms pointing forward as much as seen in later years so likely showing this Marshal was one of the first to have this mod. I wonder why they never fitted the high datum cab which was used on the V8 to the AV760 . Leyland used it but not AEC . Surely the higher cab would have made it possible to fit a larger radiator , wasn’t the AV760 prone to overheating from time to time. A header tank was fitted to later Mandators at the back of the cab

Your right about the over heating problems “ramone” as Brady’s had one Mandator in service 66/67 and 6 Mammoth Minors on order but as a result of the over heating problems with the sole Mandator they cancelled the order and placed an order for six Mk1 Atky rear steers with the 180 LXB engine.
Cheers Dennis

It would have been an easy fix everything was at their disposal , the AEC range never got the high datum cab after the V8 but Leyland offered it right through from the Lynx to the Buffalo … i think

I know one of the Draper family who ran out of Grays. They switched to other marques after bad experiences with AEC Mandators. Such a shame, a good product hampered by company politics and and full development.

The overheating problem had been reduced with the AV760 which had wet liners and gave better cooling along with the external header tank, it was a reliable engine, the earlier AV691 dry liner Mandators Dennis mentioned did have problems and the low Ergo cab’s radiator capacity didn’t help along with the higher continuous motorway speeds that had come into use. Would it have been possible to have fitted a TL12 into a Mandator with the high datum cab , if so just think have how much money BL would have saved (and reputation) if they had turbocharged the 760 around 1966 instead of launching the V8. I know there was more too it than sticking a turbo on but still it would have been a good move … hindsight hey? And when they built the Marathon cab why didn`t they lower it to fit the Mandator ?

Is this the same AEC Laurence outside Tillotsons in Burnley when new. Its not a great photo but it dud say it could be Smiles. It was on FB
Hi Ramone,It is Smiles RJR 348… Taken at Burnley,Larry.
This is Mk 5 ■■■■.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard any driver utter a bad/negative word about a Mk V, they were a fabulous machine, easy to get in and out, comfortable to drive. If I was a bit younger and a bit fitter put me a 4000 gallon tank on and I’d be off down the road.
