Hi I’ve had my class one for a couple of years now I’m currently doing low loader work based in the purfleet area for a big company
Im getting the hump with it now being asked to take defective trucks out, break the wd and generally not being listened to.
So I’m thinking about the full ADR and poss explosives and radio actives after the initial ADR
Im guessing this topic has come up a lot, but being in the purfleet area there seems to be a lot of tankers and is it easy to get a foot in the door not having any experience i don’t mind class 1 or 2 work
Any advice would be much appreciated
Also the pay is ■■■■ rubbish, never work till hours but I’m prepared to work for money if it can be earned
The way I see it, your DCPC is probably going to set you back £200-300. So why not just spend an extra £300 (if you can afford to) or so and do your ADR. That way you’ll get up to 28hrs of DCPC and your ADR at the same time.
With regards to doing radioactive and explosives, that’s normally for the military. Very rarely required on civvy street, so I wouldn’t even bother with them.
i have done all my dcpc now just finished the last 2 modules by doing the crossrail and fors courses
i have the money to do the ADR just hope i can get a job with it
If you have acquired rights for DCPC and have or will be issued with a DQC expiry dated 09/09/2019 then do the ADR with DCPC after 09/09/2014 so it can count for the next set of 35 hours
Near impossible to get an ADR job, that’s just me though, good luck… If you have a few hundred pounds to waste on doing it then go for it, I did & got over it.
Ye i think ADR tanker work is pretty much a shut door thing anall mate Father son type gig i did here up your way there,s a bit of bitumen tanker work going about that was just grapevine though mate could try knockin that door. Good luck
I wouldn’t bother with the radioactive and explosives either, as like damoq said, its not really required for civvy street. With regards to petrol tankers, a mate of mine who runs out of thurrock said alot of firms get there drivers thro agency’s and the drivers dont tend to leave as the money is too good, so getting in the door is dam hard. There are a few chemical supply and delivery firms in the Purfleet area, univar and tennants are 2. The one I work for pays that good for the work we do, no one leaves unless your either sacked or retiring. That said, you could still try them, as you never know?. I would never do anything else other than adr, and I certainly aint leaving my current job, there just isn’t anything out there that could match or get anywhere near what i get, pay, hours, conditions etc, and thats just on class 2. Im class one trained and due to move onto that this week. So more money and less work happy days. Good luck tho.

definitely no harm in trying. And definitely try and get in with the specialist chemical delivery company’s as like i said, they do pay more. From what i was told by a few drivers at my last adr course, the impression i got was that General haulage firms don’t tend to pay their adr trained drivers anymore than their non adr drivers. But don’t qoute me on that. Good luck fella, it is worth having an adr, even tho you do tend to get hounded by vosa if you’re not in the green.
Ill book it tomorrow then.
Was speaking to a self employed tanker driver the other day whilst filling up at the circus tavern he seemed to think there was a lot of tanker work out there in the purfleet area
I will try the specialist chemical companies and ones that deliver red diesel/ heating oil
Good luck with the ADR - it’s an interesting, worthwhile course…and it certainly won’t do any harm if job - hunting. A very good string to have in your bow.
Put it this way, if you are looking to get into Dangerous Goods driving of any kind you won’t even usually get an interview without ADR, so you put yourself in with a shout if you have it…especially with DCPC card to go with it…even further towards the front of the queue!!!
I would just do the full general ADR (incl. Tankers) and leave it at that…not much call for Explosives/Radioactives IMHO.
All the best Deano.

good luck with the course and relevant job hunting good buddy. Its an easy enough course and common sense prevails. The final exams are all multi choice and some of the questions have the same ansewr, but are just worded differently. You will feel very tired at the end of each day too, but it’s worth it.
I have ADR Core+Packages & Class 1 and 2 and unless your are working for the Military or MoD you are highly unlikely to use/move Class 1. As within the military scope unless you are RLC all quantities will be under the threshold for full Class 1 movements.
Some quarry companies & police might require it but the work is limited.

If you’ve yet to do your DriverCPC check before booking if the ADR course is JAUPT approved and it will contribute to your 35 hours…may as well benefit from it if you can and save your money.
If you’ve got your CPC already, can you leave your ADR till after September and get the 3 or 4 days added to 2014-2019 DriverCPC instead…?
