ADR info please

Hi all, driven class 1 since 2008 but never needed ADR so don’t know much about it. Just got a job delivering gas cylinders on a 7.5 tonne van. Company will put me through ADR and said when I start on 27th will go out as a drivers mate to learn the routes, paper work etc. My question is will I be able to drive at all before I do my ADR if my passenger/drivers mate has ADR or do I have to wait until I get mine. Thanks.

No, he will have to drive. The driver needs to have an adr

Thanks for the quick reply. Cushy start to my new job then.

Well I didn’t know that! :open_mouth:
(Or didn’t remember it… :blush:)

Remember that both of you need ADR kit, so ensure your employer provides it…
As for the course, I did a post/diary of what it entails: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=128053

Its mandatory the driver has ADR, otherwise the fines are huge.
In Bulgaria(if I remember the exam questions about penalties) the fine for driving ADR load without the certificate was 3000lv(1200GBP) fine.

Blimey, that’s a bit steep mate! :open_mouth:
Perhaps the reason that info didn’t stick with me, was because my brain said that wouldn’t be relevant to me, as I’d be ADR! :laughing:
Or do I get fined as well? :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Lol, thanks for all the replies. Thanks evil for the heads up on what to expect on the course.

I might be wrong but I thought the passenger also needed ADR, or at least be ADR aware.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, a Recovery driver can recover a broken down adr truck, without having to hold adr :open_mouth:

I don’t know how is here in UK, in Bulgaria, according to EU rules any passenger in ADR vehicle load must hold ADR awareness certificate. The passenger might not have driving licence, doesn’t matter, but must have awareness certificate.
Most times the course is taken in driving school authorized to do ADR training, but also if the company has ADR instructor for its staff.
Best bet will be ask the company ADR specialist if there is one of ring DVSA(not DVLA) and ask them.

This^^^

ADR has an ‘allowance’ for gases, but the allowance varies, depending on what kind of gas(es) is/are being carried.

Minimum PPE for gases in ADR:

  • a warning vest;
  • portable lighting apparatus;
  • a pair of protective gloves; and
  • eye protection

:bulb: Before anybody thinks that I’ve forgotten the eye-wash, …it’s not required by ADR for gases, but may be carried if the company wishes to provide it.

You’re spot-on that the passenger needs to be ADR ‘aware,’ but he will only need an ADR licence if he is to drive the vehicle.

To answer your question… Yes mate, I’ve answered above, and I know for sure.

That’ll do for me. Thank you. It doesn’t really matter as I believe the company to be sound. Just wanted to know how soon I’d be driving.
