Acting as if drunk

dyou think its possible to act as if youre drunk ,slurring speech, red face, jovial attitude but not actually be blazing drunk ? im asking cos my neighbour came over lean on my gate in high spirits telling me "im not drunk mate iv just done 5 twelve hour night shifts driving down the docks and it has the effect of making me act out like im drunk "
with that he hopped into his jeep cherokee and roared off in the manner of a drunk .

Well they do say that heavy fatigue is like the equivalent of being drunk so if he done 5 twelve hour shifts without sufficient rest in between shifts then it is highly likely

If he leaned over your fence you should have been able to smell his breath, though there are substances other than alcohol in common use now, by people old enough to know better :unamused:

I used to be three sheets in the wind after a week of long nights, but more spaced out and desperate for sleep than the life and soul of a party (the 20 minute drive home from work in the car a real battle to stay awake, cos switched out of work mode), but we all handle extreme exhaustion differently, it’s possible to go through a barrier and literally be too knackered to sleep normally.

The other thing, it’s harder as you get older to sleep fully soundly for a full 8 or 9 hours, between getting up for a pee and the increasing aches and pains decades of hard graft have left working class people with, sometimes 6 hours is all you’ll reasonably get…plus the body clock syndrome, if you’ve been getting up for years at 4am robot style to graft, it’s going to take a long time to break that cycle.

Sleep deprivation can have the same effect as alcohol. There are studies on the subject.

If he was as drunk as you describe you’d be able to smell it easily.
Sleep deprivation might have similar effects, but we’re all different.

sent using smoke signals

Lack of sleep does this, you even start to do things like imagine static objects like lamp posts are moving.

Also a diabetic having a crisis can exhibit same outward behaviour as a drunk too.

Steve Coogan was stopped by the police in London after he appeared on the Palladium
in a show that was broadcast live on ITV
He had been doing his Paul Calf character, the mullet wearing drunken Manc layabout and
the police had seen it on tv in the station canteen
His performance was so convincing, they thought they had him bang to rights for drunk driving and couldn’t believe it when he tested negative!

Does that mean he was weaving up and down the kerbs on both sides of the road?

It’s certainly possible to be so tired and exhausted that it resembles drunkenness. Slurring, poor balance, slow reaction times, and so on. And sleep deprivation can paradoxically produce elevated mood.

Five night shifts of 12 hours would shatter most people unless they are given contraband stimulant drugs.

I must be missing something here, I’ve NEVER heard of somebody being exhausted looking like they’re totally ■■■■■■■
I’ve experienced both states and react quite differenty to both.
I’ve never thumped anybody or woken up with an ugly bird next morning, before, thinking… ''Christ I must have been well TIRED last night.

O/p Normally when someone looks and acts like they are ■■■■■■■ they are usually just that,…■■■■■■■ :bulb:

he took off so quickly jeep was arse down and it rounded the end of the road without slowing and away . i now think he was probably drunk as a lord altho i didnt smell drink . i mean why bring up the subject of “i am acting drunk” ,if you are not. i also think the “5 x 12 hour shifts” was just a cover story . im not one to dob him in tho, he will hang himself .
years back i had a alcoholic supervisor i never smelled drink on him either ,one lunchtime as he drove into the yard the old bill followed him in and then took him down the station, spose he was weaving too

And the hook is baited…

He may be suffering from Diabetes and not know it !

I’ve been wobbling all Over the shop the last week and my speech had been slurred but I’ve not had a drop of drink. I’ve got some sort of bug that’s making me really dizzy and spaced out.

I’ve also had similar effects from various prescription meds.

Drink or tired he was clearly on no fit state to drive!

Exactly this, I witnessed a van driver turn the wrong way down a one way street and striking several cars. Two women swore he was drunk as he could hardly walk straight and slurred his speach but there was no smell. He was having a diabetic ‘hypo’ but until then hadn’t even known he had the disease.

Pete.

Unless you enquired or commented, why would anyone volunteer that information if they weren’t absolutely ■■■■■■ / drunk?

Being ultra tired is one thing, and tes it can cause some euphoria effects, but sluring and red faced, nah again he was ■■■■■■■

Also 5 x 12 hour nights - even when i started nights and had to adjust, I never acted drunk, just knackered by the end of it. Now do that every week and defo couldn’t be mistaken fir a drunk.

Diabetic is possible if he’s swerving, slurred and such as mentioned but people wouldn’t say they weren’t drunk and I doubt they’d have that red flush.

Whatever the cause, he shouldn’t have been on the road and unless the diabetes (and didn’t know about it), deserved to be banged up over the weekend for a visit to the magistrates on Monday before he injured someone innocent.

Perhaps OP you are indeed as odd in real life as you appear to be here and your neighbour was merely having a laugh at your expense?

now this is NOT him,but similar looking, colour/texture of face etc

having read all the replies part of me wants to have a word with him saying maybe hes diabetic “get yourself checked out please mate” but hes the sort that flies off the handle if the conver isnt going how he wants. you know how blokes can go sour as they mature hes took a pop at me in the past but then as nice as pie the next time? Actually in our conver over the gate that day he started saying "youre a great guy you are " and then launched into “dont think im drunk now” “i can see you but its like youre in a tunnel everything near you is blurry” etc etc
