windrush:
He was having a diabetic ‘hypo’ but until then hadn’t even known he had the disease.
Hypo is the result of very low sugar levels often resulting from the use of insulin etc.Although it is possible for non diabetics to have a collapse in blood sugar levels.
So possibly lying in a doomed attempt to save his licence. But which he’ll lose either way.
Being a driver diagnosed with diabetes is an awful catch 22 in that insulin dependence probably means that you will eventually have a hypo sooner or later on the law of averages which is why the DVLA doesn’t like insulin dependence. While relying on Metformin and diet etc,so as to avoid hypos and licence issues, means facing all the other risks to the body of running high sugar levels. Also bearing in mind that hypos in their own right can also be life threatening.Often meaning the worst of all worlds situation of insulin dependent diabetics, deliberately reducing their dosage, thereby increasing sugar levels,so as to avoid them regardless.
