Abolish Bank Holidays

as it happens, it is still illegal to celebrate christmas in great britain.
it was introduced by cromwell, and still hasn’t been over turned

Myth I’m afraid Phil.
It was overturned, along with almost all of Cromwells laws, at the time of the reformation.
(according to Google anyway)

I love bank holidays , I get paid to be at home doing what I like , I can’t believe any body wants to get rid of them …

Did you actually read the article before making your comment
No-one is suggesting get rid of them, the suggestion is to let people take a paid holiday when they prefer it, rather than everyone having the same day, with the resultant traffic jams and queues everywhere. I would gladly forfeit the occasional paid day if I could group them all together and then take 8 paid days together when it suited me.
Did you bother reading the article

How about a change , instead of abolishing Bank Holidays ? :bulb: With Banks and bank staff ( ALL of them ) being so greedy and unpopular with the long-suffering customer, then the roles should be reversed . This would change to : ALL Bank staff having to work on all Bank Holidays , and with NO consessions whatsoever . Allow EVERYONE ELSE to visit their Bank on those Bank Holidays , and ensure they work even harder. :stuck_out_tongue: Introduce Sunday Bank opening hours as part of the Staff working hours , without extra pay. You will deduce from my proposals that I have no time or patience for the money-grabbing scum of Bankstaff or the Fat Cat bosses . Anyone wish to add to my suggestions ? Cheers , cattle wagon man.

Speaking for myself, I have no problems with bank staff at the counter end of the service, they didn’t rip the public off.
But it would make sense in todays 7 day working week, when almost everything else is open on a Sunday, for banks to be open also.
One down side of abolishing fixed bank holidays, could be when there was a special event arranged for a weekend that is normally a bank hol, eg. an air display.
You can bet your life that the boss would have a limit on how many drivers could book hols for that weekend, and without guaranteed crowds such as bank hol weekends provide, many events would not be worthwhile.

You lot must be mad. I work to live not live to work. Why would anyone rather work then spend time with your family & friends. All you people who would rather work then be at home must be off your [zb] trolly & maybe you should get out more. We only live once & i for one don’t want to spend it working. I work hard at work because thats what we have to do but if i get the chance to have a day off then thats great. Get a life!!! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Well said.

People and unions fought for many years to get the holidays we take for granted today, sounds link many posters on here want to return to Victorian times crazy!!

Seven day trading was the start of the slippery slope, youngsters today treat Sunday as a normal day working for single time i just cant understand why we have relinquished all those terms and conditions we had just for the sake of going to do some shopping.

By the way i am looking forward to the extra days bank holiday in June bring it on.

When are hospitals going to be fully staffed at weekends and BH’s?

If you get ill on a friday, there’s officially now a 10+% chance you’re gonna die because of no treatment available until the next working day morning! :open_mouth:

Car parks have taken to charging people on BH’s, so why not actually get to see some staff when you go in?

Why is “Triage” a french word?

Why don’t we call it “Prioritize” or summat more informative?

How many limbs do you have to have hanging off before you get promoted from “Green Three”?

when people stop drawing more out of the system than what they put in,
ring any bells

Bank holidays are triple pay for me…keep em

Can’t say it does. I don’t work for the NHS so don’t know the hardships that medical staff go through to get a year off for maternity leave, full pay when off sick, and always knowing what shifts your working weeks in advance.

I don’t think having a waiting room full of hypochondriacs makes any difference to the working hours of NHS staff, but that’s what many would have us believe.

Personally, I think the NHS should be scrapped, and replaced with NI contribution based BUPA!

Eg. if you have a job that means paying your own NI, you get it. weather you pay £10 nics or £10k nics per week. If you don’t, you can go home and have sub-standard service from a memorial hospital instead, like the States.

Stops all those “sick tourists” coming over here for free treatment as well don’t it, as well as the healthy thought of leaving some non-dom millionaire on a stretcher in a corridor 'cos he’s not paid any taxes (or NICS) for yonks!

bank holidays.
what’s the point? i’ve never understood why we have them.
introduced by banks that work part time, and still want to do even less.

Phil normally you talk sense, but on this occasion your well off the mark, my Wife works in a bank starts at 9.00 but is expected to be ready for work at quarter to, get no dinner break 75% of the time if they are left with only 2 people they can’t even go for a pee which happens at least twice a week, expected to work till 7.00pm one night a week no extra pay and 3 sats per month, it’s not as many hours as truck driving but it’s not cushy and the money is crap, this is why she jacked in after 4 years.
