scanny77:
i had never intended a high security device but it would make it harder for them. it wouldnt be a simple case of opening the door and chucking something inside. if i wanted a half decent security device i would wire up a simple electrical loop using the batteries, probably hooked up to an alarm inside the cab. pretty basic stuff but it would be a pain to set up, especially if you wanted it to be effective which would require the breaking point to be the trailer door and the wiring hidden under the trailer body. door opens, loop breaks, alarm goes off!
insured it may be but that truck has been entrusted to me and no one is going to compromise my responsibilities without trouble. there is no way in hell i would surrender my truck to anyone. i dont expect anyone to agree with me (or even understand) on this one but that is who i am. its my duty to look after that truck and thats all there is to it in my eyes. if someone attacks my position i will defend it!
So you sacrifice your life over a company vehicle, There are security locks that can be purchased for trl’s,maybe if your that bothered about the trl being broken into that you ask the boss to get them in.
kitkat:
Scanny, not being funny here but wtf is that padlock gonna do They’ll have that off in seconds.( i’v got a better padlock on garden shed ffs ) Why don’t you un-hitch unit and park unit right up against the doors if you want to stop them getting into trl. At least you’ll hear any noise coming from rear of trl, then you can alert police who get paid to take care of these morons. Why would you want to be a wanna be hero against a mob in car’s,it ain’t your trl and i’m sure the company will have it insured. So when your lay in hospital possibly with serious injuries the company have claimed and got a new trl earning cash while your in pain.So let me make a wee suggestion here,do what you get paid to do and let the proper guy’s deal with the yobs. These yobs will slip up one day and will be caught, and yes i know the law is limited in what they can do in ways to punish them, but that ain’t your problem.
Good post KitKat - totally agree!
Honestly, what is it with these “HEROES” that would “have a go” with what is in effect an offensive weapon (knives, car tools etc), over a friggin’ trailer and it’s contents, that they don’t even own!
getting broken into isnt the issue mate. we park up empty anyway. the issue is the shetland drivers incident. if it was opportunistic, they wont be hanging around. the few seconds caused by a cheap padlock could be enough if they have lit the device before trying the door. if it was a targetted attack, the rest of us dont have anything to worry about but no one knows yet so i am treating it as opportunistic and trying to make it a wee bit harder for them to get me. it certainly isnt intended to keep anyone out. a decent padlock wouldnt fit on those doors anyway and im not paying out of my pocket for a proper lock
Andy, who said anything about being a hero? there is nothing heroic about fulfilling your duty. its my job, thats it!

Yeah but Scanny, your life and the preservation of other lives (depending on your actions) is a lot more important than “defending” a trailer - empty or full!
My apologies - my previous post wasn’t directed totally at you (I know it appeared that way). What astonishes me however are the amount of drivers on here who talk about how they have knives etc in their cabs to defend themselves if they’re hijacked, or to use if someone, or some people, try to break into their trailers when they’re parked up.
Granted if you’re actually attacked by knife weilding low lifes you’ve got to defend yourself somehow. It’s never personally happened to me in or out of a truck, or on the street, so I can’t comment.
What I can say is, that I carry high value goods every day, and if a van load of gun toting/knife weilding thugs actually managed to stop me, and threaten me with my life for the sake of the truck and it’s load - I’d hand them the friggin’ keys!
But for all these drivers who say they’d be prepared to defend their trucks and loads (especially when they don’t own any of it!) with a knife or other offensive weapons, when parked up or otherwise, and be prepared for the consequences…well they are talking bravado nonsense!
It’s just silly “Rambo” talk and they know it!
Most drivers can’t run the length of themselves - so it’s unlikely they would be able to reach for their weapon of choice in time to actually use it anyway!
my knife wouldnt do much good for defence. the handle is longer than the blade and its a lock knife that stays tucked away in my bag. its strictly a tool for cutting shrink wrap, plastic ties, knackered straps etc. a hunting knife it is not!
there are some rather portly fellas in this game but i have never been above a 32" waist despite my love affair with the nearest burger van i can sniff out
talking about life means nothing to me personally. we all gotta go sometime and i have no intention of living long enough to retire anyway
Just to let you rambo’s know if your stopped on a routine check and the police find things like wheel brace’s etc in your cab you can be charged with carrying an offensive weapon. But i’m sure you have a go hero’s will know the law.

The way you talk about defending a unit and trl to the hilt even though it don’t belong to you,is beyond me scanny.Your either a few cans short of a 6 pack or just plain stupid.Your paid by the agency to drive one of their customers unit and trl end of.What you gonna do next lie in wait in the grass and jump out with your rambo knife. At least your army training will come in handy eh.
in the army, running away and letting the enemy have your equipment would probably be classed as desertion and im not a deserter. i dont know why you lot are going on about rambo and heriocs. talk about making a mountain out of a molehill. if you want to hand the keys over, thats your choice. but its my choice to defend my post. it may not be a landrover full of communications equipment but its still my duty to return the vehicle to its base no matter who is paying me to do it
and yes, i DO know the law. why do you think i dont carry anything that could be proven to be a weapon? technically, ANYTHING is a weapon as anything can be used in self defence. can you see me being prosecuted for carrying a packet of ■■■■ and wearing steel toe capped boots? they would be my first choice every time
Gotta agree with scanny on this one, in the event of something happening you can never be to sure you could hand over the keys and still get shot/knifed/hit like that blackburn security person who handed all the money over and still got shot so scanny would go down with a fight to defend what he has got rather than letting these scumbags get away with something laughing all the way home and becuase they have succeded they will proberly do this again to another driver the night after.
Steve-o:
Jeezo Scanny! Be safe man. I would say ratchet your doors but you might need to make a quick exit! I often parked along from Scania in Altens
im trying to stay one step ahead mate. i was meant to park there last night but ended up in peterhead instead but i wasnt taking any chances
padlocked to prevent anything being chucked inside
i had that in the door pocket just in case. if they fancy trying it on that would smash a skull. if they are trying to do a runner in a car, it would go through a window. they arent messing around with my truck without a fight and i dont care about consequences. truck crime isnt taken seriously enough so there is no real deterrant. there will be if they happen to hit the truck i have the keys to though
Well wtf is this, scotch mist.If that ain’t an offensive weapon then i’m a monkeys uncle.

Well it’s clear you don’t scanny.
All he has to do is also keep the long bar that goes with the brace in the cab too and if a copper asks about it just say you were havin a jump on a wheel nut you were a bit sus about and couldn’t be arsed putting it back in the locker so just F[zb]D it in the cab for quickness
Thanks Steve. that was the wheel brace from that truck. i dont carry anything that could be perceived as being a weapon. its part of the vehicle tool kit so they would have a difficult time proving it is a weapon. if i carried something like the handle of a hammer, it would be harder to explain
Jackie McPhearson, the manager of Shetland Transport’s Aberdeen depot may want to think more carefully when talking to the press in future.
He says that Shetland Transport fits as many vehicles as it can into the yard, as opposed to outside on the road, but that sometimes there is not enough room for every truck.
WHAT IS MEANT BY AN “OPERATING CENTRE”?
4.1 An operating centre is where your vehicles are normally kept when not in use. The
operating centre should provide sufficient off street parking for all your vehicles and trailers.

either you were in the army cadets or did not quite everything that your instructor was trying to communicate to you in that respect.
Or were they more interested in you saving the pots and pans rather than living to fight another day ■■?
Let em have the lorry thats what the majority of people with a brain would do , even those who are forum heros who say they will stand and fight for the honour of their lorry
At the end of the day 99.99 % of drivers on a night out tonight will sleep safe and sound and not lay in bed worrying clutching a wheel brace.

i was a reg and the kit i carried wasnt pots and pans. i carried top secret crypto equipment which obviously has no relation to what i carry now but the principles are the same. im paid to do a job, i do my job and that means returning the vehicle to the operator after my shift. its called devotion to duty
