A9 Average Speed Cameras

ajt:
A posh chap phoned in commenting about following behind a truck flat out at 60 mph, 20mph above the speed limit prior to these cameras and how better it was because nobody was bothered about overtaking. He hit the nail on the head. Its slow drivers who cause the problem not speeding vehicles. When will people realise this!?!?!

I quite agree

philzee:
Does anyone know if these cameras can tell the difference between a car, van or truck? and the limits on each? or are they set up to car limits?

Dont know about the average ones, but the Tayside fixed Gatso’s certainly can … I got 3 points 2 years ago from one for doing 71 on a dual section with car and trailer where the limit is 60 for that combo. I was operating on the 10%+2 principle so thought I’d be well in the clear, just travelling as a car, I had no idea they could differentiate :open_mouth:

IMO the problem will be that car drivers will not want to overtake now, for fear of momentarily exceeding 60 on the A sections, so its going to create longer queues. Most wont realise that due the average, they’d still be ok, but they will be afraid of the Gatso’s that are all still active within the average camera zones

I’m on the A9 everyday I think it’s working this 50mph malarkey

I will be coming up the A9 sometime tomorrow pm so can all you truckers keep a look out for a red Peugeot with flashing headlights and clear the road if you do see me cos I’ll be in a hurry as I’m on a promise of something good when I get home …

I.ve just come from Perth and parked up at Aviemore now and i have to say that was one of the least stressful (and almost enjoyable) 2hr drives i.ve done in a long time, a steady 50mph without looking over your shoulder every 2 minutes or trying to see cameras in the dark is definately the way to go

I did Glasgow to Aberdeen and back yesterday, using the A9 between Dunblane and Perth. I sat with the cruise set at 81kph. Only one lorry passed me. He was obviously on the limiter. Braver than me then because I don’t want to test the camera tolerance!
Only problem I found was the number of cars sitting at stupidly slow speeds and still slowing down at the cameras. They don’t have a clue what the speed limits are. Signposts to remind them would be a good idea; ones with numbers on them because there’s no point telling them it’s the national speed limit when they have no idea what the NSL is.

Well I must be really unlucky then. Everytime I’m on A9 this week I’m stuck behind a car or van doing 45 or less on the singles. Backing the traffic right up and causing chaos on the duals. The short overtaking lanes have been horrendous when there’s a que. 3 cars forced their way In front of me. All of them on the white hatched area. There were 4 lorrys in front of me so they didn’t gain anything. 10 miles later they were still behind them.
People are the problem. No matter what rules and how hard they are enforced your never going to stop idiots driving like idiots.

Agree about the signs for idiots in cars. Many of them seem to think the 50 limit applies to all.

Thank god I’m starting in Glasgow on Monday. No more A9!

I am lead to believe that all the shopping trolleys are still going to be doing 40 on the A9 . That is ridiculous . I find those shopping trolleys annoying

Can’t really believe that (although wouldn’t be surprised :unamused: ). If the speed limit is 50 i see no reason why they would be instructed to continue at 40.

Maybe because its a limit, not a target :bulb:

its also flipping annoying when you cant overtake for miles or get to the dually and their on the limiter. mind its about 80 miles of single carraigeway from perth to inverness.

Well I was listening to radio Scotland at around 11.30ish and the presenter, the presenter mind not a caller, said the limit is 50 for cars I felt like cracking my head off the steering wheel.

Agreed, I did inverness to down south tues & ecu was in limp home mode so 50 mph was a struggle & on a9 still cars would be slower or just creep past me. They have no idea what speeds they should be doing.

Its true . They said they need to be told from a higher authority than the police . I know its stupid but don’t shoot the messenger

30mph----40mph----50mph----60mph----70mph---- no risk
31mph----42mph----53mph----64mph----75mph---- low risk
32mph----43mph----54mph----65mph----76mph---- med risk
33mph----44mph----55mph----66mph----77mph---- high risk

If you had an accident which one would you like the court to hear ?

Not sure why people have this idea that if you stick within a speed limit it exempts you from all blame. It doesn’t

Not sure why people have the idea that i am thinking i am exempt from blame, we are talking about the tolerances of a speed camera.
ā€œyou certainly are a senior memberā€

we are talking about the tolerances of a speed camera

Just out of interest is the new 50mph max rule on A roads in now nationally, or is it just experimental on the A9 at this stage?

It’s only on the A9 as an indefinite trial, and raising A road limits not planned for rest of Scotland anytime soon.
