The simple way to maintain a safe road would be to make it 50 for trucks and 50 for cars. Set the cameras with no margin for error. Yes you will still have some differential on people driving slower or speed gauge differences but if cars are not allowed to go over 50 then that eliminates most of the overtaking threat. It’s not gonna happen but you know what I mean. The only other problem with this as you all know and see in average speed roadworks is that 25% of car drivers don’t understand the word ‘average’ and slow right down for cameras

wont make any differencethey will still be the 40mph lot who wont pull in and let folk past
still be accidents caused imo by careless drivers not speed
cant think that ive seen any vehicle come of the road between iness and perth on a bend because of speed.truck at 40mph and a car at 60mph still 100mph impact
get the bloody road made into a dual carriageway ,no spend money fitting average cameras all the way from stirling to iness money well spent
.Newton’s law would say otherwise.
Why? Have they changed
Relative velocity maybe??
if you want to work it out mathematically ,try this formula . 49 mph then add your IQ, you should be well within the law

197 then, is that KPH or MPH?
I was led to believe part of the 50mph HGV/A9 consultation involved an agreement that they would clamp down on HGV Drivers on the limiter
I can’t find the exact article but I am sure it is out there somewhere that the usual 10% +2 will not apply on the A9. If I find it, I will post it.
The 10% +2 is only a guideline and they could technically do you for being +1 mph over the limit, heck, they could go for 50.1mph if they wanted to. ACPO Guidelines IS NOT LAW. Remember, your Tacho records speed every second the vehicle is moving, so if you argue it and it shows 85km/h, you are up the creek without a paddle. A bit of an extreme example I know, but if you were ever involved in a fatal collision, things like this are investigated.
For the sake of 3 minutes, is it worth it?

gettin a bit technical here and I think the 100mph impact post was just meaning combined speed and not trying to go in to physics but this explains it, a bit scienceforums.net/topic/6080 … collision/

Not sure why people have this idea that if you stick within a speed limit it exempts you from all blame. It doesn’t
Anyone been on the A9 today? Did you notice any difference? The 50mph for trucks started today didn’t it?

Sore point. I was only between Carrbridge and Inverness. 2 return trips. 23mile each way,
1st trip at 7am in the lorry. Dude in Suzuki jeep in front doing 45 on the single. Got past after three miles with a snake of traffic already behind me.
Back south in a transit. Sitting at the legal limits or trying to. All the lemmings sitting 5mph below the limits at all times in long snakes. Slowing to below 40 when passing cameras or junctions!
Returning to Inverness again . Join A9 behind a local van that usually drives like a lunatic. Yep… 45mph for three miles until again I could pass safely.
5pm journey home in car. Took 10 minutes longer than usual. Behind approx 30 cars all refusing to overtake a truck doing 43-48 At one point we passed a camera doing 25mph as someone panicked and slammed the anchors, big concertina effect.
Dual carriageways are lethal. Everybody was trying to overtake at 71mph right up until the merge in. Lots of heavy braking and horns.
Day 1 verdict. An absolute shambles

Came down from Dornoch this afternoon , only managed about 20 minutes into “the zone” before the first suicide jockey thought it would be ok to overtake on a bend, good job the car coming towards us was travelling at sensible speed. Further down I catch the tail end of a line of traffic doing 40, obviously the “professional” at the front of the line could’nt read or was just one of these fannies that rips the ■■■■, but then in true ■■■■■■■ fashion when we hit the duel off he goes full pelt.
So in answer to your Question, did you notice any difference? No, same old same old
I said right at the very start, it’s a money making scheme hiding behind the safety thing and I seen nothing today to make me change my mind.
If it becomes a intolerant shambles all they will do is lower trucks back down to 40 to make it easier for cars to overtake. If everyone got a grip of their driving and used common sense then there would be no issues.
They were debating this on radio Scotland today. A posh chap phoned in commenting about following behind a truck flat out at 60 mph, 20mph above the speed limit prior to these cameras and how better it was because nobody was bothered about overtaking. He hit the nail on the head. Its slow drivers who cause the problem not speeding vehicles. When will people realise this!?!?!
Aviemore to Invernes yesterday, traffic light so no issues. Between Perth & Inverness, the dualled sections aren’t covered, camera van sitting at the bottom of the Daviot dip, n/bound at about 12.30ish.
I travelled up the A9 from Perth to Inverness. It seemed to move better than on previous weeks, however i didnt see a single ASDA truck so maybe that was why?
Does anyone know if these cameras can tell the difference between a car, van or truck? and the limits on each? or are they set up to car limits?

I’ve heard they are the latest type and are linked to the ANPR system, if so they’ll probably be making more cash from no tax, insurance etc… than from speeding.
I am lead to believe that all the shopping trolleys are still going to be doing 40 on the A9 . That is ridiculous . I find those shopping trolleys annoying

Can’t really believe that (although wouldn’t be surprised ). If the speed limit is 50 i see no reason why they would be instructed to continue at 40.
Inverness - Perth yesterday.
As said above Duals aren’t covered by average speed cameras.
Less cars trying to overtake as if I do 49 on their clock is 53
and they would have to go over 60 to get past me quick enought.
So had queues in behind me as far as could see!
Did not bother to stop and let them go
I listened to the same radio station that JFT tuned into. There was a right ■■■ of a coach driver who said that he will have to slow down so as not to trigger the cameras.
There is a website that tells you all you need to know about the A9 cameras www.a9road.org. It has a FAQ section that answers most questions
I travelled on it on Tuesday between Dalwhinnie and Broxden in a coach. The bunching was pretty bad with no cars attempting any overtakes on the single section. The long DC section from just south of Dalwhinnie to almost House of bruar is a 60mph for the coach.
But the cameras are placed a few miles before and after the DC so im not sure how it can work out if i have been going over 50mph on the SC sections.
