I was driving along the A36 in my car last night heading towards Warminster. There was a Waitrose lorry at the front followed by another truck then me. Seeing as it was Waitrose I expected that we would be doing 40mph, no problem with that. Turns out we were doing about 37mph. I was having a leisurely drive anyway, not in a rush.
Anyway, we get to some sections of road where there’s overtaking lanes, not dual carriageway so still a 40mph limit for the trucks. Well, Waitrose obviously doesn’t want to be overtaken by the other truck so floors it to 56mph. Then we come to a single carriageway again and we’re back down to 37mph. Next overtaking lane the same thing happens again. I went passed them to see it was a Waitrose trailer being pulled by Stobarts.
What I don’t understand is, if the limit is 40mph and you want to stick to it on single carriageways why go like hell on overtaking lanes when your limit is still 40mph, unless you’re a complete knob head? Oh and I’m not a Stobart knocker but after seeing the actions of this knob I could soon be.

always one fella … but why did you bother overtaking if the speed was 40 ■■
More than likely he is unaware of what actually constitutes a dual carriageway. Many drivers seem to think 2 lanes means dual carriageway and will do dual carriageway speeds.
This prick earns extra bonus points though for sticking to the single limit but exceeding the dual limit.

Duh…I was in my car mate, hence a 60 limit that’s why!

DUH missed that bit in red I thought you were all in a 40 limit . but maybe he wanted to sit at 40 not 37 and to add some car drivers tend to not know where they are going or unfamiliar with the road

Surely it became apparent it was a Stobart pulling a Waitrose trailer when it could be “floored to 56mph” in the first place?
This would be standard practice in the roadworks as well of course. Then there’s TNT drivers, whom I think are what the Stobart Seniors graduate to, when they’ve worked off their indenturement.
trubster:
The same “Top notch” driving standards as demonstrated on the A66
I was in a 7.5 tonner at 50 on the S/C and came across an artic doing 40, fine, slow down.
When you get to the D/C, you guessed it - the artic goes flat to the mat
Needless to say, when it goes back to S/C, he dropped down to 40 again.
Very rare to see any trucker abide by d/c speed limits unless the truck is physically governed to 50. They do 40 on s/c because “I might get caught by a camera van and lose my licence” but d/cs are ok “because 10% + 2, innit!” . I’d happily wager that ~90% of the truckers on this very site use that way of thinking for their own driving too.
Winseer:
Waitrose tractors are limited to 52mph I believe…
The majority of the green DAF units are limited to 52…but, the DAF “Dual Fuel” (Diesel/CNG) units are limited at 90kmh, as apparently they run most efficiently at this speed.
Not sure about the Merc or Scania units.
I was following what I thought was a fellow waitrose truck on the M4 - he was plodding along at about 48mph. Thought it odd that I could easily catch it (flat out at my top speed - 83kmh), only to find that at the front of the trailer was a stobart unit.
Funny, I have always seen the green army pelting along at full tilt, even through roadworks, so was surprised to be able to pass it and leave it in my dust
Left hand down!:

I’m not a religious 40mph man myself and i’m not approving of what the culprits here do, but I do think there is a genuinely greater risk of being caught out on an s/c. At least thats how I feel anyway, generally more nooks & crannies for scameras to tuck into and coppers knowing full well it’s easy pickings. Many drivers simply drive according to how likely they feel getting caught is. Amazing how as soon as they stuck up those flashing ‘Speed enforcement in operation’ signs on the M60/M62 roadworks everybody started obeying the limit, even before the SPECS got installed.
I pulled over 3 times to let people past me on the A49 to Craven arms this morning…
I get paid more by sticking to the limits and taking longer to get the job done

You’ll be surprised by how many HGV and PCV drivers think that, if there’s more than 1 lane then it becomes a ‘dual carriageway’…
It usually takes a speeding ticket and points on the licence for them to realise their stupidity and ignorance.

Although PCV drivers coild do 50 on a single carriageway already

Still happens on the A9 even with the new 50 mph limit Argos motor sitting doing 40 on the SC as the DC approaches speeds up to 52 mph then back down to 40 mph in spite of the new 50 mph signage
