A34 Lorry Overtaking Ban

Motion being put to councillors today, according to BBC Oxford. The proposed restriction would cover the part between the M40 and the M4.
All very well in theory, but what happens when you catch up with a tractor, cyclist (yes some people are mad enough to cycle on it) or Tom and Doris doing 45 in their Rover?

overtaking a cyclist or abnormally slow vehicle even on a solid white line is not an offence :unamused:

b*llocks, i pay my road tax i shall use both lanes

or trucks nose to tail and dont let no feker off on the slip roads when they try and cut in at the last minute like they on on there

I admit to doing it on the restricted section near chilton, even with a crane (do they count as abnormally slow?). Even still, would be acceptable for a load of lorries to be dawdling along just because there happens to be a dawdling car in front? The A34 does seem to attract hesitant car drivers for some reason.

56 on the A34 didn’t last long. I guess we’ll all be taking the back door to Tosco wagons if this gets pushed through.

Just read that a motion was passed to ask Secretary of State to look into it, basically. If it ever did come to fruition, some civil disobedience might be in order like not slowing to let traffic out of slip roads (lorries excepted of course).

I hope this comes in, I can see me leading very large convoys as im a 52mph max man my self, well to be honest thats me top whack but its a good speed to get a brew on, too fast for peeling oranges though…

I always stick around 50 mph in my van even on Motorways, plenty fast enough in this day and age. Everyone’s in such a big hurry nowadays, just chill out and take in the view, what doesn’t get done today can wait until tomorrow. I used to say that to the distribution guy at a local quarry when he expected two days work doing in one, he never grasped the meaning of it though. :unamused:

Pete.

Yep, i’m a 50 chappie too, let the nose to tail heart attacks in a queue go past.

Get just as much done stress free in virtually the same time and both lorry and driver have an easy economical day.

S’fine by me if they want to make the whole of the country a no overtaking by lorry zone, 28 mph tractors included.

The one and only reason this has been suggested is the halfwit element’s antics of imposing a rolling 56mph roadblock upon everyone else for mile after mile and such measures are not before time. A50 next, Minister.

+1

can you get into trouble if your already overtaking before you enter the zone and carry on :stuck_out_tongue:

Amen brother rubber :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

Doesn’t bother me. I will overtake when I need to.

At least somebody is thinking about the implications. I haven’t found the A34 different to any other road in regards to overtaking anyway

The RHA speaks.

An imaginary line of lorries all nose to tail preventing junction entry/exit isn’t going to happen.

Tailgating is another practice thats going to be a thing of the past (and not before time), more and more new lorries fitted with active cruise, i have no doubt the next step will see active cruise systems forcing brake applications without cruise being on when a too close distance has been computed for so many seconds…some lorry licence holders bring this upon themselves, just as these overtaking ban considerations are brought about by some drivers selfish and bullying idiocy too.

Too many of our brethren have proved themselves unreasonable nay stupid and our industry has failed to keep our own driving in check, now they’re going to legislate and we only have ourselves to blame, as usual.

Yes those junctions will be congested and dangerous when this is implemented, but probably no more so than currently, those who can’t envisage the practicalities probably have rosy visions of cars all cruising down the outside lane at 75mph on a clear road, i doubt they’ve thought about junctions and the hiccup wave going back miles, but they never do.
It’ll still be mile after mile of pushing and shoving, just it’ll be lorries in the left lane and the rest in the right instead of a pick’n’mix.

This whole exercise is just another example of a futile re-arranging of deck chairs on the Titanic, this is a pint pot country and we already have a quart of people and the resultant traffic here and they want more (and most of us are going to vote for more next month, turkeys voting for Christmas again), it isn’t going to work and common sense tells anyone sane that.

A34 and the joke A14 are two of the busiest non urban area dual only lorry routes in the country, part of the reason is they are the main carriers of imports of Chinese tat to various warehouses of said tat the length and breadth of the country, woefully inadequate for the commercial volumes they must carry and the volumes on these two roads can only increase as the population, and our imports, increase.

…I await the next series of run-offs and other candidates for the “up my arse corner” that is the Milton turn-off…

In my mind, too many job & knockers driving too fast, too close, at pretty much all times. Tippers and car transporters especially.
If I’m on that stretch (northbound M4-M40), I’ve got paper on, and there’s no way I’m going to do anything that might lead to me having to brake hard. :open_mouth:
If Richard Head wants to get past me - I’ll let him go, and then I’ll drop back to create a new “idiot space” between.

wouldnt a 60mph speed limit be better for cars :grimacing:

Not enough overnight parking on the A34,Todhills is full up by 16.00, the road is the main link from a deep sea containers port, and should be a motorway.
Its needs more truckstops or flatten Oxford to use that to park in.
Ban all cars from using it in the day.
