I done over 800 miles of single carriageway this week and had about 5 vehicles who were tight on my bumper clearly in a hurry to get passed. On all occasions it took me less than a minute to find a clear enough section of road where I could ease off, edge to the left and indicate to let them pass. It’s simply a bit of courtesy and every one of them thanked me. If someone is obviously in a hurry letting them past is the easiest and safest thing to do. As a result I didn’t see a single dangerous overtake all week.
Far too many 40 mph drivers have a ‘■■■■ everyone else, I’m obeying the law’ attitude. That’s fair enough but don’t expect other road users to show respect when you clearly don’t.

This works well if the driver behind understands the road markings, around Sutton Bridge/Long Sutton there are sections of hatching with broken white lines. Some drivers appear to think that you cannot cross these and sit behind you. The other one’s I dislike are those have no intention of overtaking but insist upon driving along the centre white line, therefore preventing others from passing. The trucker then becomes Mr Bad Giuy for causing the congestion.
I notice that Fresh Linc drivers seem to have calmed down recently.

So if your stuck behind me, and I’m sticking to my limits, either deal with it and do likewise, or I’m more than happy to pull into the next layby and discuss it further.
So if you’ve got time to pull over for a chat, why not just pull in and let other traffic past?
TonyCBR:
Either way your gonna be late for next delivery/collection
In other words,I’m all right Jack,[zb] you.
Yes i will happily pull into the layby to let you pass, especially if your coming to discuss your impatience.
And no its not a case of ■■■■ you jack, it’s more, my licence cost me a lot of money to get, so why should i risk loosing it, just because you cant be bothered to stick to the limit.
The theory behind pulling over to allow other drivers to pass is fine providing that everyone participates. To date I have never seen a Tesco/Asda lorry move over and I doubt if I ever will.
Last week I followed an Asda lorry between Grantham and Bingham at 36mph. There was no reason for him to drive at less than the speed limit but that was his prerogative.
I sit at 40 on s/c, 50 on d/c and the limiter on m/way, but if the limit went up by 10mph some of you would still be on here ■■■■■■■■ about the ■■■■■■ that sits on the limit.
Why should anyone have to pull over just because they are obeying the law? A lorry doing 40mph on a s/c is not the problem, car/lorry driver who makes the decision to overtake in a dangerous place/manner is the problem not the 40mph speed limit.
you wann try cycling between Holbeach and Kings Lynn at 5am in the morning on the a17, some truck drivers get annoyed that im holding them up minding my own business happily cycling along, very close to edge, well expept the bulk boys they dont stop for no one
so if you see someone cycling towards kings lynn at about 6am, it might be mem thanks for the offers of coffee

Speeding isn’t necessarily impatience. If I were to catch you up while you are doing 40,I would happily sit behind you until I could get past safely and you wouldn’t get any reaction from me as I did so.Impatience to me is the "must get past at all costs"mentality that we all witness every day on the roads.

I didn’t ask you to break the speed limit, just suggested you might pull over to allow following traffic to pass.Rule 169 of the Highway Code also suggests it

We’re quite fortunate up our way,Tesco/Morrisons lorries will pull in.Get the odd one that won’t but that’s life.Asda not a problem as they only have 1 shop in the Highlands so very few of theirs to contend with.
The problem I’ve usually found about pulling in, is pulling back out again, especially when running close to the 44t limit.
It takes A LOT of time and fuel to reach 40mph, by which time there’s another queue behind me, and they don’t know that I pulled in to let others pass, only that I pulled out infront of them slowing them down.
Sorry, if I’m doing 40, I’ll carry on doing 40, may drop a little to let you pass if it’s safe, and will indicate the intention of allowing / assisting your pass (left flash will let you know that I know you’re waiting to pass, it appears clear to me (BUT MAKE YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT!!) and I’m willing to drop a few clicks off to assist you in your pass), but I WILL NOT be stopping to allow you to pass.
But, as I said before, if I reach a dual carriageway, and there’s vehicles behind me, I’ll stick to around the 40mph speed whilst they pass before increasing to 50mph.
The A66 is the worst for it (west, not East) where it’s single, then opens upto a dual but with a 50mph limit and average speed cameras, think they’re asking for trouble with that so I drop down to around 35 on that bit to make sure everyone can pass before the end, it’s only about a mile long that bit.
If you are involved in a fatal accident on a single carriageway and the cops can show you were doing over the speed limit, there will be only one result… PRISON. The boss won’t get locked up, just you.
I am currently chilling out, off the road away from the macho ■■■■■■■■, “I can work 20 hrs a day, and fix the tacho and limiter”… and earn the same hourly rate as a checkout operator.
Working on a campsite as a barman, pool attendant for 9.25 an hour in the glorious sunny Loire Valley.
I use very little Singles , one of which is not far from a tosco depot. What really gets me is some tosco drivers running at 25-30 mph ( and they do this) spinning out their hours , no need for it at all. They do the same on the dual and if it starts getting busy they are a nuisance trundling down at 35-40 mph.
Ridiculous.
I can’t see why there shouldn’t be an upper limit of 50 mph on some singles that can clearly handle hgvs at that speed.
Tbh In a lot of firms I have worked for people are flying about at full pelt just to spend 2 hours parked up kipping. There is also a lot of holier than thou elements too. I have listened to countless people tell anyone who will listen that they never speed.Loads of times I have snuck up on them with a faster hire unit on a dual and then sit off them before they get on the single to see what speed they do…
Nope not doing 40mph, they are wound right up onto the limiter Laughable , it really is.
